HOW IT WORKS: Internal Combustion Engine 

Only old documentaries can explain it so nicely. Now a days they do presentations on computers but still do not match these old ones. Btw the voice in these old days was so typical as if only one and same person was there doing voice-over for all these presentations :)

NO wonder people were smarter back then....they explain everything so simple to understand.

I know this technology has been around a long time but I’m still more amazed by an engine’s operation than most new things today. We think of the old days as more primitive but it feels more advanced than today, honestly.

Arguably the single best video I've seen on all of the internet. I was having an epiphany every 4 seconds I watched this.

And if you rev it high enough, it becomes an external combustion engine.

I like the no nonsense way this is presented. They didn't try to introduce needless comedy and jokes in this.

It was probably made at least 60 years ago and is astonishingly better than most modern day video explanations. This is to show that excellent education is timeless.

These old documentaries are amazing. I already thoroughly understand engines. But the simplicity and narration of these films can't be matched.

I remember understanding all this completely in 5th grade, without having seen this type of material, but by just reading everything about cars I could get my hands on, and all of my male classmates did as well. We knew about displacement, CR, 4-bbl carbs, injection, supercharging, big block v small block, the 'hemi', Diesels, etc. Girls would hear us talk and ask, "whats a 350 or a 427?" We'd reply, "that's the displacement", and they'd just look puzzled. By the time I was 15, I understood ignition timing, camshaft profile and other details with no classroom instruction whatever and I didn't even own a car. Automotive tech for boys back in the 60s & 70s was like video games today.

It’s always satisfying coming back to refresh this basic knowledge. Pretty much my favorite engineering achievement.

We need more people like this guy, he explains this so well, breaking it down in a simple yet effective manner. Excellent work.

I'm trying to get a better understanding of cars and how they work, I've tried so many other videos but this was one was easy to understand and remember.

After watching the old Chevrolet/GM vudeo on differentials it's clear older videos really do get the point across quite well

I just realized that the car was the highpoint of engineering, all kinds of innovations coming into the thing that would eventually replace the good ‘ol horse that we’ve all relied on for a few thousand years.

So, they had such a wonderful video editing technology back then? Amazing!

Looks like my first car, a Chevy Impala with a 283 cu. in. V8. I have memories of changing the points, rotor, spark plugs, etc and how I tought myself how the internal combustion works.

Sure you can explain nowdays cars as simple as this. But today people want to sound smarter and use syntax that will make you pause and research its meaning on google - and yet not understand it. Still, they will make an 1 hour documentary and it will take you an engineering (pre)knowledge to understand a bit. Kudos to the presenter, simple straight, direct manner, understandable for everyone. Thank you.

Crystal Clear. How is it, that in today's age of technology there is not a video to a similar effect? I feel like there could be a 1 hour clip describing in minute detail how pressing on the gas pedal produces movement on the tires. I mean the full monty, how every little gadget works. This is a great start!
