I'm American, and when I lived in Japan, I lost about 30 pounds. It was the skinniest I had ever been in my adult life. The thing is, I ate whatever I wanted! And Japanese people DO eat plenty of fried foods: kara-age (fried chicken), tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet), pan-fried gyoza (dumplings), etc. I ate those PLUS McDonald's, Indian curry with cheese naan bread, donuts, izakaya (bar) food, etc, all day every day and still managed to lose a ton of weight from the walking alone! It was totally crazy. So I think, honestly, the amount of exercise that the average Japanese person gets affects their weight moreso than their food choices.

Oh, and I also drank tons of barley tea and green tea, ate convenience store foods, chips, ice cream, chocolate... ahhh, those were the days lol.

Weight loss is nothing more than energy expenditure vs intake. In Japan you walk A LOT more which means you can in general eat more than living in the US. I plan to do a year or two in Japan, but I'm actually worried about finding a gym that isn't terrible and being able to track my food (obsessive health nut).

+Ronnie Lewis there is actually so much more to weight loss. Other factors are hormones, metabolism, medications, age and sex. Even the types of food you eat makes a difference. There are many, many studies that confirm this.

@GlumChumKitchen

Depends on the food. I was just there. I ate combini (convince store) food mostly. I got onigiri, sushi, salads, pickled veggies, udon, soba, dango, mochi, fruit cups, single wrapped bananas, bean buns, and gyoza for pretty cheap. A plate of udon with sauce was $3.00 and a onigiri was $2.00. A small fruit cup was $4.00. Fruit and meat is the most expensive in Japan. A watermelon can be easy $100. But I ate three meals a day and each meal was under $10 if I ate from a combini. When I ate out I ordered a huge bowl of ramen for $7.00 and I also bought a set lunch at a vegan restaurant for only $10 that came with a soy and veggie "buta" cutled fried and breaded served on cabbage with a miso glaze, a clear soup with seaweed and enochi mushrooms, a large bowl or rice, a cold sweet and sour vegetable tofu dish, a salad, and pickled dikon radish. So if you know how to read Japanese and can explore less touristy areas in Japan food is affordable and sometimes even cheaper than here in the states.

Have you even ever been to Japan? It is not, it's actually way cheaper than the countries I've been to in Europe and the US, you can get a decent healthy meal with 700 yen, which is equivalent to 7 dollars.

Im America most of the time vegetables cost more than eating unhealthy foods. i think that is one reason so many people are over weight ,along with more people are on computers,electronic games and phones and kids are not playing out side near as much as they use to 20 or even 10 years ago. convenience of fast food and delivery has also caused people to be over weight. if vegetables and healthy eating were cheaper im sure more people would eat that way

@balipsette

MELISSA 4 I think that's just an excuse, honestly. Even if healthy foods were super cheap, people would still prefer the junk food, because it "tastes" better and has that dopamine effect that a plate of broccoli does not.

Yea I totally agree.. like for example Panera bread foods are all organic which is soo expensive and the Macdonald's, it's all greasy food that's why its cheap. But I think most reason why soo many over weight in America is because most Americans love eating out .. we Africans, Asians and Indians , cook more at home than eat out. And our foods takes hours to be ready but American food takes just minutes. Also , most food in US haves cheese and cream. but us , most of our foods all haves vegetables. And only eat out like once or 3 times per month .. so really big difference
@jessicarises8980
@jessicarises8980 7 лет назад
MELISSA 4 I agree with whitehatonthebeach here. It's just an excuse. Sure, McDonald's may be somewhat cheaper than going to the grocery store, but yet again, excuses tend to get the light of day in America. Vegetables and fruits don't bring up your dopamine levels too much, like processed fake foods do. If Americans could develop a taste for spicy food, that would be a start. Capsaicin in hot peppers increases metabolism and has a host of other benefits. Plus, Americans consume WAY TOO MUCH SUGAR in the form of pop. Pop is the worst. Cook County, in Chicagoland area, just raised taxes on sugary drinks by 20 cents. A measly 20 cents, and everyone is complaining. The whole point of the tax is to get people to not drink too much pop, by making it more expensive. It's not stopping people from buying that shit. Which is sad. Excuses reign supreme in America.

I loose 10-15 lbs the first two weeks every time I come to Japan. The walking is unbelievable and I am from NYC and take the subway daily, but this is way more massive. I can't tell you! Every day walking to the train and climbing stairs I finally counted. I walk up and down 1967 stairs everyday not including all the walking. I eat better and drink gallons of green tea a day. I am always so healthy in Japan and my face shines bright, then I return and gain it all back LOL!

I loved all your observations. I would also love to add that the Japanese add very little salt in their food. No Japanese deserts are actually v sweet. They also eat a lot of seaweed based stuff,I didn’t really like the flavour but it was there. Lots of antioxidants in Matcha tea. Since people store less Food as you commented they are forced to eat fresh and don’t seem to be habitually opening packets for easy food. The Japanese public toilets are very different from the western toilets, you’re kindof expected to squat and that keeps your joints working well. The corner store also has great healthy food for sale like fruits or sandwiches with a good filling even for people on the go. Very few people seem to have cars, parking space being premium, people walk a lot. I think the last most important thing is that they are honest with themselves and stick to time.

Here in America we have many things wrong that Japanese health and culture is getting right as you very well explained in this video. The healthy eating, the small portion sizes, the willingness to walk and take train and not using dishwasher, using little to no oil, little to no sugar, more healthy sweets and so on. I shared my thoughts with a friend and he explained to me that there is even a stubborn and prideful movement of americans who created the phrase, "Fat shaming". Fat shaming is obese people getting mad and lashing out at people with healthy body because the fat people feel offended and do not want to conform to the healthy body encouraged by the news and media. Japanese culture is doing good by trying to keep people healthy.
@normanlee6609

+Carl Troia It's not genetics. that is a common misconception. I'm a Chinese-American born and raised in Southern CA. I know many Chinese-Americans who partake of the American diet and they are NOT slim. But many of my family in Hong Kong, same age, are slim. It's environment. In Asia, the food portions are smaller served in restaurants (visiting family are always surprised at how big the same dish is when we eat in Chinese restaurants in SoCA) , there is less fat, sugar and salt in the food. Most of my family can't eat American sweets, too much sugar.

Some of that is true, but for different reasons. Like, before I moved to Japan, I didn't walk that much. Now, since I do not have a car, I have to walk 5-10 minutes to the train station, several times a day, and then I walk 5-10 minutes to all the places I am going from the station. I take a lot of steps everyday, so it's a lot of good exercise. Also, having to go to the supermarket everyday means more walking, so more exercise. Most American's buy in bulk, so they only need to go to the store maybe once a week. So, you could combine 4 and 7 into one rule saying "Walk more." Number 8 is probably true, but it's different here than it is in America. In America, healthy food is super expensive. I remember seeing organic food for 5 times the price sometimes. Japan has a lot of local fruits and vegetables shops all over, with affordable fresh foods. Since Americans don't go to the store everyday, trying to eat fresh would be really difficult. And, if Americans started going to the market everyday to buy fresh food, they would end up burning more gas and it would cost a lot more money. It's just too expensive in America to eat the way Japanese people do here. And, similar to your number 15, I have heard Japanese people make sure their food looks and tastes great, so they put a lot of effort into their cooking and presentation. In America, most people do not have a lot of time, so they just want to eat whatever they can make quickly. I remember just bringing something frozen, that I could microwave for lunch at work, because it was fast and I didn't have the time the day before to make anything elaborate for the next day. When I first came to Japan, I hung my clothes outside to dry. However, now I have a neighbor that goes outside everyday and smokes cigarettes, right near where I would hang my clothes up. If I hang them up, they will stink and it's gross. So, I take my clothes to the laundromat down the road now. The dryer there can fit probably three big loads of clothes, so I just do two loads and walk them all down there to dry. I think you are getting somewhere with number 14. I think McDonald's fries and burgers are about the same as usual (like, a medium fry here is about the same as a medium fry back home). But, the drink is super small. When I first came here, I was surprised that I couldn't get a big drink anywhere. I was used to drinking a lot of pop or bad sugary drinks with meals. Now that I have been in Japan for 5 months, I have gotten used to drinking so little. If I go to McDonald's now, the small drink is more than enough. haha The other day, I was at a breakfast buffet and I had a small glass of tea with my food. I finished my first plate of food and realized that I had barely drank any of the tea. I have gotten used to not drinking very much. Drinking less probably does help keep people thin, especially since Japanese don't tend to drink pop or sugary drinks too much, and drink more water or tea. Japanese people are also thin because they care about their appearance and they are conscious about their heath. So, they will do something that they don't like, just because it will help their health. Like, many people here eat natto, even though they don't like it. Americans don't care much about stuff like that, and worry more about how much things cost and how much they can get. Also, they would rather be comfortable than worry about how they look. It's all about the difference in culture and how Japan emphasizes health, and America does not.

I enjoy so much to read your message. It was truly interesting, especially the part of why you can't get fresh or organic food everyday. I think Japanese are really blessed. As for McDonald's it was my memory when I was a child, so it could be wrong, because when you were small everything look big.. So sorry if I made mistake. Any how I enjoyed so much. Thank a lot!!!

komori841 Of course! I always enjoy your videos. If you keep making them, I'll keep watching them! :) I also forgot to mention: bowing. I bet all the bowing Japanese people do is good exercise as well. It's kind of like doing a sit-up, but standing up. I'm sure doing actual sit-ups would be more beneficial, but I'm sure bowing helps a little.

When it comes down to it, it's all about portion control. The portion sizes in Japan as you mentioned are much smaller than most countries. In combination with the use of chopsticks, the food will breakdown and digest into your system a lot easier. Green tea is also a great way to speed up your metabolism. However, drinking too much green tea will leave stain your teeth. It's simple - portion control.

Shompa Saha Not true, actually. I have a small structure, my sister has a normal structure. So I think I have the perfect, personal comparison. What makes you look fat is fat, unless you're short. Which I am. She is taller but had the same BMI I did and we wore the same size pants, I still looked pudgier than her, by far. Now shes fatter but we both look like we might have the same BMI. She is bigger than me, but she doesn't look "fatter." There is a difference.

i have considered this Q or concept of Eastern Asian vs WEstern health! I had some Japanese friends who stayed in Australia for over 1 year and gained weight! But when return to Japan - lose again! I thought about this for a long long time. And came to the conclusion: 1. Culture: Japan (and most other East Asian countries) have deep culture which includes diet and holistic medicine! You have a system of diet, thinking, sex, family, behaviour/health! - which is refined and known! 2. Cultivation practices: Exclusive to Japan - Organically sourced food almost all! This avoids poisonous chemicals. Also ensures food to be amazingly health giving! 3. Land: The soil is VERY fertile! volcanic and new! Providing nutrients! I know point 1 is very broad - but to go into the details would make this post a very long one. I'm not Japanese - but a student of humanity and science :)

3 years ago I was working on a cruise ship that cruises all over Japan. We were cruising Japan for 2months. And I realized how lucky I was to step on this beautiful country. I love Japan so much and people are amazing. For me they are the most disciplined and most polite! I love the food so much that I gained too much weight. But I didn't care, I enjoyed every food I ate even when you go on a typical 7 eleven store, there you can find a looot of tasty food. There I tried the most tasty 7 eleven shushi that is more good than a fancy Japanese restaurant here in Philippines. I miss Japan so much and I want to go back so bad. 😭

Thank you for your video, it was very interesting! There in Finland people aren't as slim as in Japan, but not as fat as in USA, I think. There's probably many reasons to that. We also don't have huge food packages here. Some time ago they tried to make chips and sweet packets bigger extra-packs but now you can buy smaller packets again because of people prefer that. So remember, you as a customer can have an influence on what they sell on stores! Another thing is white bread. It makes me sick that I can't eat dark rye bread or often even mixed grain bread abroad. That's because of eating only very white bread makes you feel stuffed but you'll get hungry soon again (so you will have to eat soon again). Third thing is that we have footpaths everywhere. My friends who lived in USA and Britain, got frustrated because of they weren't able to do anything without car or public transport. There was so many motor roads and only few safe foot paths or bicycle roads. They also make food very salty and lots of sugar on it (they add sugar even on juices and milk!). So you can't avoid it and you have to make everything yourself if you want to eat normal healthy home food. By the way, my friend brought some sweets from Japan. They weren't too sweet even if they looked like they would be. I liked it a lot :)

I just came home from visiting a day ago. I stayed in Yokahama. It was Atsui (hot!) and very humid. I also noticed from the time I visited about five years ago there are more BIG people in Japan now. You don't see super large people like here in America but the school children are much chubbier now than I noticed before. I attribute this to the increase of western style foods and fast foods now eaten more regularly than before by the Japanese. A traditional Japanese diet however does keep you slim. Small amounts of meat and fats, little or no dairy products, less sugary fatty sweets, less sweet drinks, and more fish, seaweed, vegetables, rice, miso, and Japanese pickles, natto are all in the traditional diet and if many people from America adopted this diet I believe the obesity epidemic here would slowly turn around. I'm vegan and I found a few vegan places in Tokyo that had some amazing food! Also in Japan portion sizes are smaller. The only place I ate at with large portion sizes was a Ramen shop. I couldn't finish one bowl!

Exactly! Totally correct... I agree. Also: Hara Hachi Bun Me; eating only until you’re 80% full. Japanese philosophy is also about eating while using all of your senses and appreciating every little thing in connection to the food. Meaning: having a deep appreciation and thankfulness for the whole process that has gone into making the meal; form start to finish, having respect for each of the things in the process. This is also done by saying “Itadakimasu”.

I also think it has to do with iodine, and omega 3 as you said. The Japanese probably have the highest rate of iodine consumption in the world, whereas iodine defieciency is being reported even in developed countries. Iodine is extremely important in regulating metabolism. Unfortunately iodine deficiency is often overlooked as people in the medical community wrongly assume that it doesnt exist in developed countries.

(as a Russian who gained more than 11-15 kilos or 30-33 pounds for one year in Japan) 1. Fish is good, but only fish I can afford on a daily basis now is surimi. 2. Genetics! The first thing I was told to forget about by Russian nutritionist was white rice. It really made me frustrated that I couldn't eat normal Japanese bento or had to leave the rice... Don't eat any rice now. 3. The oil thing is true! (tonkatsu and karaage tho) 4. Gonna ignore escalators from now xd 5. Envy those who lose their appetite in summer 6. In my case, low temperature in the room causes weak blood circulation and swelling 7. Big plastic bags everyday is kinda zeitaku xd 8. Moyashi cabbage! Other vegs are zeitaku 9. Same with white rice 10. This one is definitely healthy. But neither green tea nor black oolong helped me to lose weight xd 11. Always using drying machine xd 12. I've got 2-3 plates and two cups, don't even wash them every day 13. Not sure about the US, but in Russia food is sold in much bigger portions, but you're not supposed to eat it all at once. 14. McDonalds portion sizes must be the same in Russia... 15. That's true, not only portions are small (but I guess cakes served in fancy oshare restaurants are small everywhere), the whole cakes are so small and super expensive!
