Matt Baker is joined by former F1 World Champion and Sky Sports' own Jenson Button who discusses if Lando Norris can chase down Max Verstappen to claim the drivers Championship and his thoughts on team orders and whether McLaren need to put them in place. He also gives his thoughts on Liam Lawson's return to F1 in the RB to replace Daniel Ricciardo and what the drivers would have done in the Autumn break to keep them ready for the final run in to Abu Dhabi.

It's funny the similarities between Jenson's championship year and Max this year: both started with a dominant car in the first half of the season then just were both trying to cling on to the lead against better-developed cars for the second half!

Why didn’t you ask him which position he would rather be in, Lando with the better car but fewer points or Max with the point advantage but slower car rather then which car he would be in right now. Kinda obvious which he would choose…

to be fair he did mention he didn't see a team replacing drivers mid season unless the driver was putting the car in the wall very often and logan sargeant did that very often daniel wasn't as competitive as he should have been but he wasn't binning the car off every weekend

I dont think it's a fair to say there's equivalence between Williams and RB. Williams were loyal to Sargeant, they gave him so many chances, they also had kept him since 2023's season began. They couldn't afford the cost of repeated broken cars, and enough was enough. RB have flip flopped drivers, De Vries was dropped after far too few races, I would say potentially unfairly but I can understand. They then introduced Ric, then Lawson, dropped Lawson who was performing very well to bring back Ricc which was fair enough, and then dropped Ricc again. Not remotely the same, and it's not hypocritical for JB pointing this out at all.

Saw Jensen ripping that Ferrari 250 Testarossa last weekend at Sonoma. So cool to see him out in a vintage car putting it thru its paces. Sonoma is a very unforgiving track with ominous walls very close to the track. One mistake and you bin it into a wall. I'm sure he wasn't pushing too hard in that multimillion dollar Rari! I will be in Austin this weekend for the USGP as well. Super stoked to see McLaren in proper form!

Jenson has the most experience leading the WDC while not having the car anymore. The problem for Max compared to Jenson is that Lando is more consistent than Seb was in 2009.

There is no benefit for Oscar to help Lando even with the 2nd faster car. It will be Lando has to do it on his own. Would u want your teammate to be a WC this year rather than wait to start from scratch with your teammate next year where they can race probably into the 1st corner.

If there was more races, i think absolutely lando would win it! But with the situation we’re in, i don’t think he does! Yes Max can finish P2 every race and sprint race from now till the end and win the title, but for Lando to stand any chance he needs to win every race and sprint! Max finishing 3rd or lower and DNf’s for Max can play a huge part, but I do still think max will finish above Lando in a few races, which makes the task even harder for Lando! I still think RB will sacrifice the constructors to protect Max’s lead, so will starting boxing Checo to take fastest lap, (If Lando Has It) But lets see, even as a Max fan, its very interesting and better than the last 2 years!

For all the noise they've made, Lando has only gained 1 point on Max since Miami (12 races) - It's not looking good, and they need a bit of luck to really make things interesting

Love to hear Jenson's insight, he was an amazing F1 driver. Definitely not the fastest but the changing conditions charm he had with the car was on another level. The Championship this year is uncertain for sure but definitely going to be one to remember, Max might not have the car now but he's been able to drive the flawed machine to the front on pure merit. I think Lando had a large mental barrier of winning an F1 race which I think importantly proved to himself that a championship run is possible and he isn't cursed to never top a podium anymore. I think the McLaren team orders issue is similar to what happened to Jenson and Rubens early in the 2009 season with 'Cambergate' but as Jenson suggested McLaren are quite late to the party on team orders which as much as I love watching teammates fight with one another at the front of the grid but I'd rather have 1 winning driver than 2 losers. As for who's going to win it's not easy for either driver, Max has a car that is fighting him at every corner but Lando knows that it's a late charge for the title. The end of the season is shaping up nicely and I'm excited to see how it all pans out.

As mediocre as Sargeant was most of the time, it's not fair to make the comparison that Colapinto scored 4 whole points to Logan's zero points over the season. Let's not forget Franco came in to a heavily upgraded Williams that was capable of scrapping for the final 2 points scoring positions....Logan never had that for much of his time at Williams.

Max doesn't need a DNF to do badly. Just be outside the points...or even 8th, 9th or 10th means a massive shift to Lando....if he wins that is.

I suspect McLaren will be focused on the WCC right now, depending on what happens with Red Bull and Verstappen they might give Norris the benefit with team orders in the last 2 races. Verstappen won 4 out of the first 6 races - can Norris do something like that in the last 6 races??? Something like that is over his head.

1 point lando came closer since Miami (where the McLaren became the fastest car)…. I repeat… 1 point. Certainly won’t be doing 52 in the last six. Only if technical issues haunt Max Lando might have a shot.

Fully agree with Jenson that Mercedes have the best driver lineup. The idea Matt tried to pretend that Lando & Oscar are a better lineup than Lewis & George is laughable.

@@TheNecromancer6666 Completely untrue about Lewis. As he’s still a great driver. And you’re right because George is on the level above Lando and Oscar. Oscar might eventually reach the same top tier as George but he’s not there yet. And Lando has proven to be a second-rate driver with incredible luck. Nothing more.

Mr. Baker it is not a question you ask Brits or English racing drivers:’Do you think Lando can…..” . What do you think the answer will be? They all shish want hope do believe pray for and so on. I will say Lando can win the WDC but not yet this year.

With that car, and his experience Lando should be leading the championship. End of discussion. Put Max, Lewis, Leclerc, Alonso or MIGHT I SAY a more experienced Piastri & they are rinsing the field.

The issue is Norris is a B+ driver (harsh but true). So for Lando to win he needs to drive at his absolute best and hope Max has a slower car/is unlucky.

@@gameofender4463 I think that's not true. Lando is certainly a top driver in regards to speed. What he lacks is the cutthroat ruthelesness of a Champion. Comparable to a Jenson Button. Not comparable to a Verstappen.

Oscar doesn’t have his points because he has not been delivering as well as him so how does this make sense. And if lando has been bottling when he is literally out performing his teammate what does that make Oscar who also is in the fastest car. They are BOTH IN THE SAME CAR, love. Like no one is holding him back to go and be better than Norris. So far he has not been. not once has he put himself in the better position than lando in qalis to prove that he does deserve equal #1 treatment on race day. It’s his job to be good or as good in the fastest car. Doesn’t mean he is better.

@@pllambert1352 exactly this. They’ve had equal opportunities and Norris is clear ahead. It doesn’t matter that Piastri is in his second season. For all we know he could’ve peaked here and could be downhill from here. Piastri would’ve struggled to get the same reputation as Norris if he had to drive the same cars Norris had to at the start of his F1 career. Also can’t forget that besides the top three constructors in 2022, Norris pulled that tractor of a McLaren to a podium and and was the only driver outside the top three teams to do so. People just be hating because they’ve got their own agendas. Norris will smash Piastri next year and it won’t be close now that he knows how ruthless Piastri is willing to be too and should be more comfortable fighting at the very front now

@@pllambert1352priority is determined on race day not on quali lol. Fun fact , 3 of the last 6 races they've started on the same row as each other, and in all 3 of them oscar has overtaken lando in those races.
