Interview with Red Hot Chili Peppers engineer Jim Scott (Californication, By The Way, One Hot Minute).
In this interview clip he discusses what it was like working with John Frusciante on Californication & By The Way, as well as his solo record Shadows Collide with People, which feature Josh Klinghoffer.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers' lineup during Californication & By The Way consisted of Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante, Flea & Chad Smith. Their lineup during One Hot Minute consisted of Anthony, Flea, Chad & Dave Navarro.
In total the band has recorded 12 studio albums: The Red Hot Chili Peppers (1984), Freaky Styley (1985), The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987), Mother's Milk (1989), Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991), One Hot Minute (1995), Californication (1999), By the Way (2002), Stadium Arcadium (2006), I'm with You (2011), The Getaway (2016), Unlimited Love (2022). The first two singles from Unlimited Love are Black Summer & Poster Child.
Anthony Kiedis, John Frusciante, Flea, Chad Smith, Dave Navarro, Josh Klinghoffer, Jesse Tobias, Arik Marshall, D. H. Peligro, DeWayne McKnight, Jack Sherman, Hillel Slovak, Cliff Martinez & Jack Irons are all of the official band members the RHCP have had over the years.

The thing you have to remember about John is that he very much straddles the line between avant-garde/noise stuff that embraces dirt and imperfection as a path to capturing truth, and a more pop approach. His guitar work (at least on studio recordings) is always extremely sensitively, artfully and deliberately executed in the service of the emotional content of the song. He can go full-on pyrotechnics when he wants to ('Dani California'), wistful, bruised but newly free ('Scar Tissue'), monstrously libidinal ("Show Me Your Soul'), flat-out heartbroken ('I Could Have Lied'). He's a soloist of enormous range and depth, and, beyond all else, a true artist.

Very interesting re: Californication solo… I always interpreted the ‘plinkiness’ or ‘struggle’ to play notes as vulnerability, like at the beginning of the second 4-bar phrase of that solo when the first high note just barely materializes. I think it was 100% a choice and beautiful one at that.

The Peppers have been the apex of my love of music since 1989 when I first heard Mothers Milk. John’s guitar was my portal into that world. The back bone of that album is Flea and Chad with that powerful driving rhythm section, but John was a young wild genius over it all. I’m not religious but their music is about as close to church as I have. They’ve always been a quartet but I can say I think it’d be a beautiful idea to basically add Josh as an official fifth full time member. Fuck it, five guys. He’s not John, obviously, but the dude is a force musically. He’s been low key behind the scenes with them for a long time and is getting better and better with songwriting. He learned a lot from the time they spent with Dangermouse and while for ME the band really is the band I know when John is at the helm creatively, I can say I will miss what Josh brought to the band. If they’d bring him back into the fold officially I think it’d be amazing. Also as a side note I LOVE the direction they took for a minute with Dangermouse and if they revisited that with John now back, I think they’d create their magnum opus. I can only imagine the musical landscape Frusciante, Klinghoffer, and Burton would weave together.

yeah I disagree. Shadows is what RHCP would be if it was only John. And that's exactly what it is. John's solo stuff is totally different from RHCP. I think the songs are the way they are, mostly as a reflection of Anthony's vision for the band early on. John's contributions to RHCP are probably influenced by that vision. That's sorta what band members gotta do, they all gotta get on the same page. Then John's solo stuff is obviously him writing 100% what he wanted to. And to me, they're totally separate entities. What they COULD be? They're one of the biggest bands ever, and it's a pretty contrarian opinion to think Shadows is better than any chili peppers album. I like John's vocal tone, but he's not very technically skilled vocally either. And if Anthony's vocals fit the band, like you say, why do you want him replaced?

SCWP with a great random singer wouldnt be too good formula. Its 100% John that makes the album sound the way it sounds. If peppers would have had a great singer from the start the songs and albums would be totally different. No great singer is gonna do that funky scatty rappy singing. And without that their sound would be much more insignificant and dull. Peppers are the perfect example where the group is more valuable than the individuals combined.

7:34 sitting on your knees blocks the energy from going to legs - this is a good trick i know cuz i practice that way and had an epiphany about it while on lsd

I can't believe that someone that calls themselves 'engineer' has so bad audio quality in a call

Dude come on Josh was John's friend and they made his solo records. Josh was back up guitar and keyboard on the Stadium Arcadium tour. Not to hate but if you didn't know that and you barely asked about By The Way which is easily their most musically ambitious album if your a big frusciante fan so there's literally a million questions you could have asked. I'm not trying to be a dick so I would hope you take it as constructive criticism if your gonna spend your time and money and get an opportunity that I've never seen anyone get before to talk to someone who was inside enough to know what he's talking about but outside enough to speak candidly. Also you would know that Josh is self admittedly not actually a guitar player originally as his primary instrument so that was an odd question. That said I learned a few interesting things for a person like me who really is interested in this very specific stuff. And btw I'm more than a casual fan but the things I pointed out aren't things I've researched or anything it's just like pretty common info. I really don't mean to be a dick I'm sorry this was really cool I was just a little disappointed that you really didn't ask hardly anything. It was still cool tho a lot of people will be satisfied. I'm not tryna be an aggro rhcp "stan" person at all. I really do mean it as constructive criticism if ur gonna make more vids. Power to ya.
