In the well-read October 2007 Fire Engineering Article “How Kinks Affect Your Fire Attack System” Jerry Knapp along with Tim Pillsworth, Christopher Flatley, and Doug Leihbacher go into great detail how kinks affect your fire flows. In this episode, we have recreated this same work in the article and the results may surprise you. We found that there is no pre-conceived rule of thumb for how kinks affect your system, rather testing with your own hose and nozzles is the best way to know how your kinks will have an effect.

I do not want to be taken as attacking or criticizing your video! I think this was a tremendous video that proved a testament to your "high quality hose!" I would like to see the same comparison with new and used 1.5 and 1.75 hose. My guess is, as you pointed out, different equipment, age, quality, and condition, could have more significant results on your test. It might even be that going with your HQH, eliminate's the problem in most cases. I know that 15 years ago, we went to low psi red heads and I proved with a flow meter, that putting one good kink in the hose took us down by 50%! Repeatedly! I think your video makes a great case for upgrading and modernizing a department's old and tired hose! Thank you for an informative video!

What was the hose size in this test? 1 1/2" or 1 3/4"? Also, with the increased use of wetting agents in modern fire apparatus, it would be interesting to see how these agents affect flows using the same parameters.

Was the hose kinked before the line was flowing or was it while the hose was flowing correctly?

Hi Eric, the lines were flowing correctly, then the kinks were added and secured.

Looking at the folds on that helmet liner, this guy spent more time in an office reading about fire than he did on a fire ground. He is definitely not FDNY

Jerry Knapp is not on the FDNY, he is from Rockland County NY just outside of the city. You can read his full bio and more about him here here...www.brasstackshardfacts.com/author/jknapp/ Thanks for watching and thanks for your attention to detail!
