Great analysis, it shows that kobe was never a blowby guy even in his athletic prime, probably explains why he had a habit of pulling up on a jumper even when be had a step on the defender on the drive. He didn't have that elite explosion to get the rim at will.

Thank you and yeah I really tried to showcase that. Obviously we all know he was capable of rising up but he didn’t quite have that explosive first step we see in other young stars

Kobe started shooting the 3 a lot more once the 03 season started. That's really when he started becoming much more of a 3-point threat and would pull up off the dribble with a defender right on him. Would've been very interesting to see how his play style would've adapted if he were in his prime during the current era.

Really well done. I've been ringing this bell for years- Kobe did more with less than people realize. Vince and Tmac had alot more twitch. Maniacal work ethic paid off for Bryant.

03 kobe had one of the quickest first steps in history but he tot injured and was never the same. That kobe would have easily been the unquestionable greatest ever but he was never the same. Even mvp and championship prime kobe wasn’t healthy at all when compared to lebron at the same age. 03 kobe is by far my favorite player of all time

Now I understand why people say he wasn’t that “athletic” like MJ or Bron. I just saw him throw down dunks in the beginning of his career and assumed he was very athletic but now that I look at it he didn’t have that “lift” or “spring” or whatever you wanna call it like Bron or MJ
@JT_Breakdowns
@JT_Breakdowns 10 месяцев назад
Honestly I use to think the exact same thing. But when you take a closer look you see that he didn’t have that “spring” that allowed him to just take off at will

Kobe had more contested poster dunks than Lebron. He had elite athleticism, even if he didn’t have the measurables of MJ and LBJ.

Among elite guards, he's top three in scoring per 36 minutes. Well down the lists for assists, rebounds, and 2-pt FG percentage. But combine that with him being one of the best defensive guards ever (if not the best). On the short list of best around guards.

Iverson generated (scoring + assists) 34.1 pts per 36 minutes played, which is pretty far down list for elite guards. Shot 44.8% from 2p range; again, not among leading guards. Never made all NBA first or second team defense. One of the greats to be sure, but not among the elites.

The selected clips seem cherry picked to support the general argument. That only works when complemented by stats that offer a relative perspective. How many drives per game did his contemporaries convert? How did the frequency of his drives change over time? Or should we just trust you? Clips from 2012 and 2014 were repeated, but he played most of his NBA ball before then. You can't talk abt Kobe's rack attack movement strategy without talking abt his right foot take off. Many examples of this in 1998-2003. 2004-2005 was all abt off hand development and saving the load on the shoulders. 2006 (lose some weight, fresh knees). I could go on, but i didnt make a vid abt the evolution of Mamba. This video is incomplete if it intends to live up to the title.

You can watch another series "Greatest Peaks" by Thinking Basketball. He never really had a quick first step he was more slithery and crafty getting into the rim simply because he lacked the power and athleticism of players like Jordan or LeBron. That's why he often times settles for tough mid range jumpers as shown here and also in the "Greatest Peaks" series. Which makes me respect Kobe even more. He was an elite scorer and a 30ppg scorer multiple times settling for jumpers that had 2-3 players with their hands up on him and STILL being able to make it.

That Mamba Mentality is what put him above so many others regardless of what the numbers say, there's stuff that don't make it into the paperwork and he had it all! He had some raw skill but it was the work ethic, the will and need to win, the small improvements over time, the way he accepted responsibility even when other people messed up, the way he played through the pain (and you'd never know it), the way he carried bad teams without a complaint, a true student of the game that never quit, just different. Like Jordan without the natural athleticism. The polar opposite of someone like LeBron that came in hot, has freakishly good genetics (both huge & muscular, and rarely injured), has hopped superteams from coast to coast farming rings, and plateaued a while ago, yet still whines, lies, complains, and says he has no help with All Stars behind em 🤦🏽‍♂️ One had to work for it all the way to the end, the other chased stats and other people's legacies. Kobe wanted to be like Mike til he realized he could just be Kobe and LBJ is still tryna get 5, much less 6+ 😭 They are not the same. It's Mike, Kobe, Kareem, Bird, Magic, then everybody else 💯💯💯

That's because he was playing with Shaq for the first 8 yrs of his carreer. He got limited areas to operate specially until 2000 season Here's a fact you forgot. In 200-2001 season when Kobe just dismantled the Western conference playoff opponents, he started to become an in and out player. Specially in game 3 of WCF. Shaq sit out in the 3rd qtr and Kobe just made a clinic. Even in the closer vs Sac that year. In 02 it continued the same trend. See the cllips you were showing was back in 2000 finals, Kobe was even injured due to Jalen to some of the clips. In 02-03 that is the year that he started shooting a lot of 3s. He became the leading scorer of the Lakeshow. In 05-06 season that is kobe street ball and start of the maturity of his game. He don't care if there are 3 or 4 guys to guard him he will shoot it even if it's for the game winner. In 2008 season he started the MJ 97-98. More of posting up. The Achilles year is a mix of all what he got. He was a lethal 3 point shooter at clutch that year. He just refused to lose. Dragging his team from 17-25 to a 43-39 and his team won the last 2 for a 45-37 record. That is just Kobe all heart that year. And that made a true NBA top 4 NBa great of all time. No frauds

Gotta also remember, he was still just a skinny, way undersized kid when he got in the NBA. LBJ was 6'8 225, MJ spent three years in college so was better suited. Kobe, went from the senior prom and dominating highschool, to playing full grown men in thier peak athletic abilities. But once he put it all together, he became the only player to come close to MJ.
