A fair point. I can't help but like her, but then again something just doesn't sit right. Hopefully she is just being cute, and playing the game, before the Angela Rayner I would like to see comes out, or maybe she will morph into a career politician like many of those before her. We certainly need more people from the real world entering politics. It's regressed since that stopped happening.@@joeambaye8681 A great podcast though, and Angela Rayner came across very well. Loved the bit about council housing at the end, as for me the building of more council housing will be the backbone of what then hopefully will be a better Britain for future generations of working class people. We need to change peoples perceptions of council housing and being working class, nothing wrong with living in a council house, council houses as they were in the 1950s, not what they became from the 1970s onwards. Nothing wrong with being called working class either.

I thought political interview journalism of this quality didn't exist any more, great job guys. This feels like the sort of conversations politicians would have in the 1970s where issues are discussed, politicians give answers rather than soundbites, and sometimes questions are tough but they come from a place of respect. Angela Rayner is such an incredible person and it's hard not to like her.

Labour became electable because the tories was such a disaster, that is the only reason, starmer and his ilk have no idea where the running of this country is concerned, that's why starmer has asked that mass murderer blair for " "help and advice" what does that tell you about labour?

I find it a crying shame that huge swathes of people won’t consume this type of media where we really get to know the people who have a huge influence on the parties we might vote for. Instead they will witness sound bites on the News and attention grabbing headlines from Newspapers. This is real. Not manufactured. Keep it up gents.
@eightiesmusic1984

I think you are missing the point. It should be about policies not personalities. That is how it used to be until the morphing of politicians into semi celebrities. It started many years ago but in 2019 the first celebrity Prime Minister was elected. That went well, not. Client media working in hand with the Conservatives and the lack of serious news/ documentaries combined with changed viewing habits mean that there is no space for serious discourse.

@@eightiesmusic1984 I think that's a good observation, but it doesn't ever hurt to have probing interviews of politicians to try and see what makes them tick. But it does make you think - I'm middle aged, I haven't even watched the news since before lockdown because it's all so depressing and I've given up giving a shit. Until recently. If I'd known 20 years ago that I was going to be regularly enjoying a podcast hosted by Alastair Campbell, I probably would have shot myself to stop it happening (I was a Lib Dem voter back then). So the medium here is what's bringing me back to the discourse. I read Rory Stewart's recent book, and was glad I read it. I've already seen Angela Rayner on James O'Brien interview doing her life story just like here, and was impressed then. Am I risking indoctrination here from these lot because I got a bit closer to how they think and let them give me a better insight into the political sphere, or am I being unduly influenced by their nice guy personalities, while not being exposed (or have forgotten) their darker halves? It's an interesting thing to think about.

@@andrewgoodall2183 The world as it lived by the majority is not necessarily the one described by the establishment. Confirmatory bias and an echo chamber of reinforcement perpetuates the same narrow set of ideas around the neoliberal consensus. Labour is as far removed from what it is supposed to be about ( allowing for the fact it has always been a broad church since its inception but no more, with the Socialist Campaign group very much in a minority on its own and without any influence, although that would change if Labour does not win a comfortable or large majority).than at any time in its history. There are good grounds to believe that the party under Starmer wants to eradicate the left. The Blairite ascendancy has a grip on the party and does not intend to relinquish it. A duopoly where both parties coalesce around almost identical policies is a sham democracy but we are being sold the idea that Labour should replace the Tories without any compelling policies to convince people it will make a difference. If the politicians of today were scrutinised as they were thirty years ago and beyond, they would be forced to provide detailed analysis for their positions. Platitudes would be given short shrift but client media and the cosy consensus renders most of what passes for interviews as nothing more than a PR exercise. The voters have been ill served by the media landscape in Britain for decades, creating a real democratic deficit. I am 53 and have given up despite bothering to set out my thoughts in posts like this. I see little grounds for optimism but it is ingrained in me since the eighties to advocate for a better society even though it is ever more elusive.

What I adore about Angela is that despite having a genuine story of hardship (unlike these fictionalised ones that celebrities and millionaires manufactor in order to justify their successes) she is extremely aware that there is nothing particularly special about her. She was given opportunities, given the support, the help to get out of that situation. She doesn't pat herself on the back and say "It was all me. I demonstrate how nothing is beyond you if you are willing to work for it. I prove that poverty is a choice." She says: "I prove how essential that role that the state should play is. I illustrate that we can and should help these people insteas of demonizing them, because once you do, look at what any of them could accomplish. We have to do it more." It's fantastic. The opposite of the Drawbridge "Got mine" mentality. Its trite, but she knows it doesn't stop with her. It continues. It has to. And I *love* her description of leadership. Not knowing everything, but finding the right people to plug the gaps. I dont expext the Prime Minister to know how a Pandemic works. I expect them to call up an epidemiologist. I expect them to *lead*. And I 100% believe she could do that.
@vivianjames9925

I agree with everything you say EXCEPT - there IS something VERY special about her. She is very very clever, and yes, she has achieved all that with support, but mostly she has overtaken most people in parliament because of who she is. It takes an incredible person to be able to come up with solutions to turn the country around when you have had to rely on yourself from birth, and had to get your education when you have already left school and are a single parent. I think she's a once in a generation person: her teachers could help her because she is that very special person.

No idea what you mean by fixing things from the ground up and making them sustainable- I suspect you do not either. After two years of a Labour government sticking to Tory policies/ spending plans and no change, the Tories may well be able to plot a path back to power. Read Keynes- he has the answers. I wasn't a fan at all of Angel Rayner and still remain some-what sceptical about her abilities on the world stage to represent us as a country following the 'tory scum' outburst (not professional at all even if it is what a lot of people think and even if it was appropriate about Johnson), however now having never heard her backstory, I feel you can't fail to be impressed with how on earth she managed to get to where she now is considering from where she once was. It's hardly the usual backstory of most of our politicans is it?..... pregnant at 16, left school with zero qualifications, born to a mother who couldn't cook and had no books in her house, and now a mother herself to a partially blind son. Frankly that's amazing and I now have a lot more respect for her than I did before. If it is to be Labour next year, knowing now what I know about her I for one at least have more faith that she might actually care about us all, in particular about the lives of the poor who frankly need someone to represent them during these deeply unwelcoming and challenging times.
@ym10up
@ym10up 5 месяцев назад
I think one big thing people have to really consider is what one wants in a political leader. A lot of us naturally want someone who is charismatic and well spoken to represent a country on the world stage, which you alluded to. But in reality, that is not really a quality necessary for a politician who does good for the people and the country. Models or actors can be very presentable, but that does not make them suitable political leaders. I think we all have the unconscious bias within us that we cannot imagine someone who talks like her and comes from a background like hers on a world stage. I hope soon enough we can all take it for granted that someone like her is just as capable of being the leader of a country.

Really illuminating interview with a politician who I've tried-for a reasonably long time- to understand. I thought the questions were solid, and her answers were confident enough to warrant serious consideration as a potential future leader of the Labour party. As someone who has always voted conservative (small c) it's refreshing to know that, whilst my party has been seized by ideologues and charlatans, my ideals and beliefs still shine through even in the far-left reaches of the Labour party, I've been impressed by what Sir Keir Starmer has said so far, and after leaning that way for a good few months now she may have just sealed my vote.

Interesting use of the term 'far left' there. If your (small c) conservative ideals and beliefs are 'shining' through in the Labour Party then how can you also describe it or Angela as 'far-left'? The statement makes no sense. You are not left wing now because you are voting Labour. They are right wing now because they are espousing the correct politics to attract you - a right winger.
@nicklpantis
@nicklpantis 5 месяцев назад
@@Jack-xg1kgI think he means that in the Labour Party you will find real far lefters as you would do in any party; it is the same as acknowledging there are very far righters in the Conservative Party. He is not talking about Reyner, but literally ‘the far-left reaches of the labour party’
@darkwarlock123
@darkwarlock123 5 месяцев назад
The remaining left wing of the Labour party were evicted forcefully as soon as Starmer took control. In the circles that I run in, Corbyn had moderately left wing policies: a good start, but not an actual socialist manifesto. The response from Labour leadership and the main stream press was to smear him and remove him and break their own procedures to remove him and all of his supporters. So when you talk about Angela Rayner being "far left", I immediately want to communicate what real left wing politics is about, and how far short any of New New Labour (Labour 3.0?) come to that goal.

As someone made in social housing I'm very pleased to hear her passion about it. Ironically, this is the only place ive heard about it. This podcast cuts through the noise and gets the important stuff out there. Just to expand a bit on what the difference is between someone like Angela (or myself) and Rory is that we've been devastated by the structures that be way before Boris lied to parliament. We feel more about Grenfell than we generally would about the state of democracy - because the status quo delivered us so many assaults to our basic human rights. I do personally agree with Rory about the importance of certain structures and testing the levers of democracy has signalled to a spiky old lefty like myself the importance of such levers. But for a lot, this upset just looks like a shake up of the status quo that did nothing for them before.
