I dream mostly in English while my mothertongue is German 😆 I think it's cause most things online are in English and even if I actuvely think about something or try to express my emotions (even journaling) I think automatically in English. Althou when I was in China I would dream in Mandarin from time to time. But yeah while speaking 6 languages (working on number 6 and 7) I rarely dream at all so I can't tell how much I'd dream in my other languages 😆 I dreamed in Portuguese when I was in Brasil so it always is based on environment

I have become more creative, there are things you cannot say the same way in two different languages, so I have to think out of the box to express myself and that has extrapole to other aspects of my life, the mentality of it's ok to not know everything now that I decided to learn portuguese, things at the beginning are all hard.

Crazy thing, I once dreamt in German when I was starting to learn the language, and I could pick out like 7 words XD. Now I still remember it, and the weird thing is that there were words that I didn't know then that I thought were gibberish that my brain made up but now I know that some of those "gibberish" words were actual words in German!

The rapid fire thing reminds me of reading stuff with multiple languages. Like reading a fight scene in an english manga with german power naming conventions. At some point your brain doesn't know what language it's reading anymore. Interestingly i've noticed that reading like this confuses me and makes my brain freeze up, but not so much while talking.

I vividly remember having a dream in Spanish shortly after I started playing vr chat and talking with native speakers (this was back in early 2020), I was in this world speaking in perfect spanish with this group of people, and it was super weird because I couldn't even speak that good at the time. I guess it's very different in dreams because it kinda showed me that I can think very fast and say things to myself in spanish, but in real life when I'm actually speaking, it's much slower and I overthink it a lot more. Nowadays, I'd say that I can speak as fast as I could in that dream on a good day.

I have a video idea. Take a CEFR test for all the languages you know. It would be interesting to see your level in all of them.
@alanguages
@alanguages 2 года назад
Ikenna in his description he does not learn languages for school or a job. It is for fun and inspiration. Speaking 7- 8 languages in ten years, suffice it to say he is not high levels in any of them, except his native English. It is difficult to maintain languages and add more, if he isn't in an environment to keep using them.
@ShawnComposer
@ShawnComposer 2 года назад
@@alanguages yes, I knew that. But it would still be interesting what levels he has achieved.
@alanguages
@alanguages 2 года назад
@@ShawnComposer I am in agreement with you. The C.E.F.R. tests would be an indication of Ikenna's level. He does not read or write the languages though, just tries to speak. He wouldn't be able to take a test in many of them. His hearing comprehension might be even lower, if he was given a B2 level interview. He stated he went to school in one language abroad. I am presuming, that is his Dutch. Even with that, some native Dutch speakers have pointed out his grammatical mistakes.
@ShawnComposer
@ShawnComposer 2 года назад
@@alanguages I’ve been studying Spanish for almost a year now. I can even tell he makes mistakes in Spanish, but that’s okay as long he makes himself understood. But for the other languages, I don’t know his level because it sound like gibberish to me. I’m sure he has some reading comprehension, I can’t see him studying a language and not studying the written form. Anyways… if Ikenna could take a test for all his languages as a video, that would something interesting I would watch.
@alanguages
@alanguages 2 года назад
@@ShawnComposer Yes it would be an interesting video, IF Ikenna ever makes one, which is extremely unlikely. Japanese average use for reading and writing is about 2000 Kanji. Mandarin Chinese about 2000- 3000 Hanzi characters. Russian uses the Cyrillic Alphabet. The others on his language list are Latinate, so Ikenna can adapt easier to those. I do seriously doubt Ikenna will reach or go for the levels for the average 2000 for both Kanji and Hanzi . Reading and writing are other skills on top of listening comprehension and speaking. All of them are time consuming, so the little bits of talk he gives in the other languages are likely just that. I do commend he is learning, and encourages people, but again to have presumably eight languages in ten years is definitely not feasible in a high proficiency in all of them, (Reading, writing, understanding and speaking) along with trying to maintain them. He isn't even in an immersive environment, long enough for all of them. Like his description, he isn't learning languages for a job or school. That definitely lowers down the odds learning to read and write.

The swearing is a funny one, I tend to start with the last language I've learned and end up with my first language when I'm really annoyed. I also prefer to swear in whatever language the least people in the room understand. I think generally though people feel more inclined to swear in languages they've learned later in life because they don't "feel as bad" as the ones that they more closely associate as swear words.

I'm in the process of learning a second language (Spanish) and something I've personally noticed is that I sometimes no longer have complete thoughts. In English, if even one word is missing from a phrase of the sentence, then the meaning of that phrase/sentence means nothing or something else entirely. But in Spanish, that isn't always the case. For example, in English, we say "How are you?" But in Spanish, it's "¿Comó Estas?" Which means the same thing. Yet, in Spanish, you don't need to say "you" (or tú) because the conjugation of the verb is the conjugation for "you." I'll find myself not using pronouns in my thoughts. It hasn't really seeped into my speaking, but I've been able to notice the fact that sentences and phrases still make sense to me, even in English, if there is no pronoun. It's not the largest or coolest thing, but as someone who wants to learn at least three languages, it's kinda exciting.

I'm Brazilian, so I speak portuguese which is kind of similar to spanish. we usually don't use pronouns too, after I begun to learn english a lot of things started to happen with the way I used to thought, like put "from" or the translation in portuguese (de) at the end of sentence to make a question and ask something that you would use "from" in english. and when I need to think about anything, I use the english, mainly when I'm alone, because when I talk to my self in portuguese I usually whisper, and in english I speak louder :)

I use 4 languages in my everyday life (3 fluently, one intermediate), and 3 I have learned the basics of, but I haven't used them orally in a long time. But last night I had a dream in which I had conversations in 4 languages (3 of my main languages and another one). Maybe because I watched this video yesterday. 2 language-dreams are common for me, 3 rarely, but 4 I did not remember. However, as we only remember a tiny percentage of our dreams after waking up, it probably is much more common. I love learning languages, but sadly I did not have time to learn a new language in the past 7 years (I'm 30 now).

4:00 I felt this. I've always wished I grew up bilingual, but sadly I'm an American born of American parents so English was all I got. The majority of the world population speaks more than one language. It's less common to only speak one. Yet here I am, almost 30 years old and only speak English fluently. I have an interest in etymology and have studied languages in the past, but never to a significant enough degree to be even remotely conversational in any of them. Motivation is not my strong suit.

I definitley agree that when you start learning a new language after studying another one previously it gets easier. I studied Mandarin for 6 years (though the first 3 years were not intense as I just took it at school) and started studying Japanese almost 6 months ago and my progress has been much faster than with Mandarin (even compared to when I started to take Mandarin seriously three years ago) despite Japanese and Mandarin having no grammar in common. Unfortunately on top of university classes, studying two languages at once is quite difficult so I'm prioritizing Japanese at the moment as I enjoy it more. And also, I agree about how it changes the way you think. The SOV word order in Japanese threw me off at first at Mandarin is also SVO like in English, but I do notice myself thinking in my head in English with the "I (describe, describe, describe) (action)" sometimes.

I’ve been practicing my Spanish for about a year now (after a hiatus of nearly 20 years; wow) and I dream in Spanish at times, but my Spanish is always at my real-life level lol. I don’t dream in perfect Spanish. Regarding the “personality change,” yes, I feel way more expressive in Spanish than English.

In my dream I was speaking Spanish fluently with other people. I was so mad when I woke up cause I wanted to know why I can't do it in real life yet. 😒😃😄😃

The dream thing is an interesting thing because the language in my dreams depends on who is in the dream. If my parents are there we speak Swedish, if my husband is there we speak English, and lately with all the Korean immersion I OFTEN dream that I meet Korean people that doesn't speak English so I feel embarrassed that I'm not better at communicating so I wake up at 4 am in a sense of shame and start studying. My friends go "wow you have such discipline!" No my brain whoops my ass at night.😂 I have dabbled in Chinese a little bit so I overheard Chinese in 1 dream so far. The language swap under the radar... man, everyone wants that native level proficiency but the way I need to listen to myself talk to notice if my language tries to switch is EXHAUSTING! I'm happy for my success but I get so much teasing when I switch language for a few sentences without noticing. In Swedish we have that habit of tossing in a single English word here and there and when I do my brain just doesn't undo the English back to Swedish. With Korean I've started to want to say "why?" Instead of "what's wrong?" Or "how come?" I also love finding words that only exist in that language but not the others but it becomes a struggle when it's time to remember how normal conversations describe that 1 thing you have the perfect word for. In English that word is mellow for me... closest I have in Swe is calm but calm is different from mellow. Lastly studying languages has improved my ADD. I can focus better for longer, my recall and memory is better and through studying languages I became better at solving how to quiet my brain so instead of anxiety from brain chaos I am zen pretty much always. My problem solving also improved from gaming but I did notice a huge growth in myself when I dabbled in Japanese about 10 years ago and now again with the Korean. When learning English it was as exciting as finding a secret crypt with secret code that you suddenly understood and you were some adventurer about to find hidden secrets you never knew existed. So cool. ^^

I speak English and Spanish but I remember I woke up from a dream where i was trying to recall a word in English IN MY DREAM, It was crazy, Or I would dream and suddenly I would use lots of words in English that I can't retrieve in real life or I can dream in both languages is weird, I can dream using Spanglish or broken Spanish or English and it doesn't matter to my brain😄

Thank you for mentioning the part about about personality changes. Every time someone says your personality changes in another language or in order to speak another language without accent your personality changes in that other language I always think: Nope, that's not me. If that was me I would feel like an actor in my own life. I agree with your observations, at least for me that's how things work. Greeting from Germany. That brings me to an interesting question: I would like to know if people who grew up bilingual also have that notion. My best guess would probably be 'no', but that would be interesting to find out. My idea would be: as long as you are slipping into another role in another language, you don't feel comfortable with you being you in that language or to fully embrace how that language sounds to you. I'm speculating of course and I would be curious to learn more. No matter what language I picked up, this changing personality idea never crossed my mind, not once. It only got introduced to me through the YT polyglott community.😂

Ah yes, that German sentence structure of SVOV... It's the reason why I never got the hang of German, even though I had studied it for 5 (yes FIVE!) years . That structure just felt odd to me. I'd like to relearn the language, but I'll do it the polyglot way!
