I’ve successfully learned Spanish to an upper intermediate level. Haven’t studied flash card or Duolingo in 3 years. First 3 years I wasted my time doing that crap. 6 years altogether. Comprehensible input just watch shows on Netflix to learn n listen to audiobooks you’ve already read or know the story of like Harry Potter. Trust me you’ll be better off
@RamboTheGrand
@RamboTheGrand 2 года назад
@KaraDUN Yes it does, take Matt vs Japan for example, he learned Japanese all by input, watching, reading, and then context will come naturally from experience and also grammar.
@Trillvil1
@Trillvil1 2 года назад
@KaraDUN yes. Comprehensible input works for every language. For example I’m learning Turkish n Russian for about 3 months now. I haven’t studied one drop of grammar n I’m already starting to understand a little bit. Literally all I do is watch the show in English then in the target language so I know what’s going on. That’s how you make it comprehensible. You have to do it for hours a day tho or it’ll take longer to see results

@@Trillvil1 Duolingo is interesting for you to create a vocabulary, create a study habit. I had a hard time studying just watching Netflix a language I never studied with. So I recommend knowing how to reconcile various study methodologies. Duolingo does its job very well.

Yo Ikenna! So I've been trying to learn Japanese and I've been doing it with this little unknown app called Kawaiinihongo which, IMO, is probably one of the best and most fun Japanese learning apps so far, but it's very underground and not many people know about it, but it's helped me a lot! They also have a more game-fied vers. of it called kawaiidungeon!! thought I'd mention it since it's not one of the boring apps but I also feel like it's not too similar to Duolingo!!

I remember when I decided to stop relying on Duolingo, and bought a 3-part textbook set to start learning a new language ( Russian). It ended up having a ton of mistakes and poor explanation (amazon reviews gave next to no mention of the mistakes, but perhaps they didn't know), burning me out and making me go back to Duolingo. While Duo feels way more intelligently put together, I still don't like the wording of their tips and notes as well as the abundance of nonsensical sentences vs useful ones. IMO Duolingo is good for breaking the beginner barrier before moving on to a more long-term resource and routine.

IMO: A SUPERB language learning app has you learn vocabulary by games, and then after a lesson, you have a mini conversation to review what you just learned. I’ve used Babble for 2 years now. It has/had 2 uses. 1. Was to introduce myself to trying out learning a language. 2. Vocabulary. All I use it for now is vocab. And I havnt found a better way that works for me to remember new words. I got a teacher 2 months in and relied on them to give me the grammar tools I need. But the app has been running alongside me since the start as a supplementary tool.

TLDR: if you rely on just an app or choose one of the “fluent in 6mos” bs courses you’re gonna have a bad time. If you only rely on the apps. The problem is you. Not an app on earth can replace reading, writing, conversation, and consuming media. Nothing is wrong with the apps. It’s how seriously you are taking the language. If you rely on an app to teach you everything or choose one of those “fluent in 6mos” bs courses you just do t want to work. When was the last time we read a book in other language? That’s how we get better. It’s why our teachers encouraged us to read and write every damn day lmaoo

I use pimsleur ($20 month) for audio comprehension, Duolingo for spelling and writing practice on site with keyboard, and try to read Spanish translated comics or non translated comics/posts. For me having both allows me to practice new material both ways, teaching new vocab while also having times where the vocab mixes and I get double emphesive via both Duolingo and Pimsleur. I think Duolingo is good, but as others said, don't solely rely on one form of language learning.

I've used a lot of language apps, but the only one I left on my phone is "Drops." I rarely use it at all, but it's my favorite. The software I use most is "Anki," right alongside Drops. Motivating yourself is not as reliable as creating a routine system, for example: I have over 100 cards to do on Anki every day, and I do this every day regardless of what I'm doing. So I think a routine is a more effective and reliable way than motivating yourself.

Learning a new language, basic word learning at first, I take photo of rooms in my house and my local walks, upload with a partner and learn the noun I see, colour etc... Then learn basic verbs i.e. to walk, to see, to wash etc from the photo as you do these things every day! In present then past tense then future tense. I read a story online, with translation possible it for it, highlight the verbs, then bound and connecting words. Going over the same sort story will take days or weeks but good foundation building then start on another. Just some ideas....

I've been learning Japanese for 1,5 years now. I study everyday on my free time. You don't really need too much money. I don't recommend you to use Duolingo. Learn your hiragana and katakana. Get a beginner grammar book like Minna no nihongo. Listen to free podcast everyday like "nihongo con teppei" and read asap on NHK web easy for example. I work my Japanese everyday 1 or 2 hours a day ( I wake up early for that) and it's pretty efficient. Now I take conversation courses every week on Italki. It's not expensive and really efficient!

@@puntherline I mentioned Minna no nihongo. I finished the first book (and did ALL the exercises on my (paper) notebook. I also worked Kanji and Vocabulary with Wanikani. It's not free but it's a pretty efficient system (but could be really time-consuming... I had to reduce the pace of my reviews), you can also use Anki decks to learn your Kanji, I'm sure you can find "wanikani-ish" decks with mnemotechnics. Now I know over .200 kanjis and more than 500 vocab thanks to wanikani (mostly), I'm starting to learn how to write them. I love it! Last thing, I would recommend you to read ASAP, try easy websites like watanoc (pronounce watanoshii) or NHK web easy. You can find really beginner materials, mostly on Watanoc). And I listened to the 500+ Nihongo Con Teppei podcasts. I think they are perfect for beginners, and they are becoming harder little by little. (but I'm sure you can find other beginner podcasts). I think working every day (even 15 min or 2h) but every day is the best you can do to learn! Good luck

I use Duolingo to learn Hiragana and Katakana and to kind of just review over them every day. Their alphabet course is, somewhat efficient and it has been 100 days marking today that I've used it for that purpose. One app i find quite helpful is called renshuu. It helps you a lot with sentence structure and learning new words, and I've actually understood what they're telling me. I have a whole notebook dedicated to what I learn on renshuu. But, I will say, I really would like to try out your app. Out of everything that is "supposed" to keep me motivated, you do. I am currently working on some new vocabulary, so ill be able to make better sentences, but wow, i am so so glad that you decided to make a youtube channel dedicated to learning languages. (P.S., i adore your vrchat videos, and those keep me super motivated, so thank you, Ikenna! I really owe you.)

LOL, I'm fluent in English, but I've never heard of "Double Cheeked Up." Now I know it means boredom. With me, what I do is play a movie that I know in the language I'm learning in the background, while I do Anki or someother app/book. I play the movie because I get bored with just apps or books, so I need something in the background. Granted, it takes longer to study, but I do finish my studies!

Will your app only focus on popular languages or will it feature smaller languages. Like Esperanto for example?

I have a question is it easier to look up videos on RU-vid for native speakers of the language? I’m trying to learn when they’re sharing videos of how to say certain words, and sentences and phrases, etc. better than using an app.? or using both of these would help?

If people want dry language learning go back to when, I was in high school before all these Apps were avaliable. You would have to go into a bookstore and buy a "Living Language Set." All you had was books and CD's. But did yet work? As long, as you stuck with it yes. But was it dry and hard to stay motivated? Oh, absolutely!

Nothing wrong with these apps as long as you know that it won’t get you fluent and at best will get you to a B1 level and there will be lots of work to do after you finish the app to get you to that level.

my favorite language learning apps: RU-vid, Lingq, Netflix and Kindle 😀 good content is the motivation. when it's a low motivation day I just watch Netflix 🤣 it's still immersion.

Duolingo is a tool to get started with a language with learning a few words sentences structures you have to start watching movies and videos on the target language maybe even translate words that you don't understand don't learn the translation just get an idea what the word means. Word by word you will learn the whole language and when you remembered a word "pet your shoulders" xD That OH YESS i know this word wow so cool. Next time it will be easier to remember.

Rosetta Stone, is probably one, I should have not have bought. It feels like, so late 90's and early 2000's the technology. I have a lifetime subscription but it's just kind of blahhh!

I dont have a problem with the “proper” spanish but i need an app that teaches me in the way that they actually speak to each other. Because i can communicate with spanish speakers fine up until they start talking to me like a friend and then i become confused

I just hope the app is gonna be free/really cheap non-subscription based and doesn't have any intrusive ads (full screen videos you won't be able to skip for a couple of seconds), the ladder being the reason why I don't personally like duolingo for the phone
