It's no secret that LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and James Harden have been among the best players in the NBA this season, but why exactly have they been so dominant? In this video, The Ringer's J. Kyle Mann breaks down how the playmaking abilities of these four players set them apart from the rest of the league.

Arvydas Sabonis is the biggest 'what-if,' IMO. As a basketball fan it kills me that by the time he got to the NBA his knees and ankles were already wrecked from overtraining with the Soviet team.

I go Rose(youngest MVP far from his prime still playing in a big, slow era) or Walton beating the possinle GOAT Kareem and not being able to continue. Even Oden just being his size/athletic ability post Shaq and pre Joel/KAT/Joker etc. Essentially only having prime Dwight as big man competition. I do get Sabonis I just think he would have had to face an extreme level of competition. Shaq, Hakeem, David, Ewing, Zo, Deke, Brad etc. The 3 elite of the era were ridiculous.
@Integra00
@Integra00 4 года назад
William Jackson I’ve put a lot of research into Sabonis after his son was drafted by my team. He imo after watching the way he played and how he did against good competition and how freaky he was I would say he would be better than everyone except Shaq and Olajuwon during that era. He was quite literally A 7’1 300 lb Nikola Jokic who was an incredible defender.

@@Integra00 being better than David is as impossible as Hakeem and Shaq. Easiest the most athletic and best shooting of the three. With DPOY worthy play. I too know Sabonis well. I would say his vision is on par with the other greats. Joker certainly takes advantage of the eras spacing with his vision, a low scoring high post passer would be unheard of back then. Probably the last was Russell. Webber and KG are similar but they are also scorers taking advantage of the angles created from their attack. All im saying Sabonis would have to show a level of threat i dont know he had to be what i think people imagine if he were to conform to the eras style, low post passing doesnt yeild out consistent high assist games. But he also could easily have considering his frame and skillset. So yea much like a eras Joker with his frame and passing being dominant traits and while being complete not dominant enough in any particular scoring style(not the roll man like Karl, shooter like Dirk, post scorer like Hakeem/Shaq, floor runner like or giant triple threat position like DROB. But enough everywhere).

It depends on how your coach saw the game I guess. If they saw the game as positionless, they would value overall spacing concept than adhering to specific roles for positions. But if you always flashed the ability to make a good decision with the ball and put it on the floor, your coach would let you do it. Much like how ADs coaches as hew grew taller didn't stop him from playing like a perimeter player as he started playing the game as a guard.

The real kicker are those ESPN highlights where he talks all the trash and asking the other team who can defend him and just sinking game clinching daggers in opponents' faces. Two years later and Jokic is the unicorn standard to what a big playmaker is all about. Even when it comes to firing passes from different angles and timings that the rest of the players on the court didn't account for. Its kind of had a ripple effect as other teams have hung on to their established ones (Heat, Wolves, Kings via a trade) but other teams have started their own projects to develop theirs (Rockets, Thunder).

This video is insanely useful for guys who think that today's NBA is regressed, people don't play defense, people are soft etc. The game has evolved instead. The basketball from 80-90s is no longer viable for today's game. It's so much harder to play defense now, cause you have 5 people spacing the floor, instead of like 4 people in the paint as in the past.
@harmonicarchipelgo9351
@harmonicarchipelgo9351 4 года назад
Some of those dimes, though! This might be a blueprint for superstars, but the bar is crazy high for imitators. You need to have world class scoring, size, handles, playmaking, and passing. The real miracle is that we have 4+ players who are pulling it off. Oh yeah, ideally you should play D as well. That is one reason why I respect Giannis so much as a player: he is arguably the best in the league on offense and arguably the best in the league on defense. There are players that can just about match his O or his D, but nobody can match him on both. Kawhi is the closest, but he definitely falls short.

Just like the 3 ball, dual threat wings as the best primary arent going anywhere. You can trace it back to rule changes(and somewhat analytics, tho analytics by nature are reactionary. Spotting a fact rather than setting it). Wings by nature are just giants with extreme skill and athletic ability, already a good option to build around. But post 04 with zone being allowed(no illegal defense) Lebron and co. style was perfect to drive and kick. In this time you see the rise of scoring point guards as well(1. They saw Lebron. 2. They still were far and away more skilled than your average wing). Then the freedom of movement rule combined with Curry's success and Houston analytical approach encouraged the increase and skill of 3pt shooting(that particular skillset at that, since league 3pt shooting % increased dramatically without FT shooting doing the same). You add the Thunders campaign for Russ boxing out to get your playmaker the ball as soon as possible the rise of triple doubles increased even moreso than with Lebron(which was dramatic in itself). You end with a league whose best option is a scoring/passing wing who is kicking out to role players that are valuing their low attempts with a shot worth more. The next step is the big whose adept at passing when coming off a roll/pop(essentially an Amare/Malone who can hit the corner or through a lob at the free throw line besides hitting that shot or xscoring at the rim. Can you imagine a rolling hard Joker passing to a cutter or a pindown if the threat of his scoring was greater?). Tho i could see a widening of the court making the corners as long as the rest bringing back big back to the basket play, without illegal defense the corner defender is immediately up on the post. Fascinating game. A slight change in rules or a innovative player can change it completely from what you knew just yesterday.

Dual threat wings have been the best and most versatile players as primary threats for two decades now. Even during the 80's-90's era where HOF bigs were running around and being cornerstones to championship caliber teams. Jordan refined the tactic of being a dominant player who can score with their back behind the basket like a big but extend the range to all the way to the perimeter. So the idea with his talent and ability is to destroy star matchups by beating them. Back down smaller players and drive/slip through bigger ones while attracting double/triple teams and making great decisions with the ball. When rule changes started to favor offenses for perimeter players so it would bring about the advent of small guards like Iverson/Wade/Rose who can attack the hoop at will, odd enough it is the big talented two way wings who continue to feast. Lebron playing from the perimeter optimized the drive and kick to shooters strategy but took years later and a more talented team to show the results for this. At the same time you have guys later like Harden who showed he can also make it work by being absurdly efficient attacking the hoop and getting his shot off the perimeter with like his lethal step back.

Wouldn't making the corners as long as the rest just put the help defense in a harder spot? Even the rotating player would need an extra step to get there. Yes it would be a lower percentage shot than the current corner but you would get more open opportunities. We would have like a ton of open corner 3's(long ones to be fair) or a lot of 2 on 2 plays in the pick and roll. Which players like Luka Harden and Bron would dominate in with no help defense.

9:24 what a NASTY play. Rips up the defense and the no look pass at the end to cap it off. I had to go back and watch it like 10 times.

I think the 2020 draft are bringing 3 types of players including those being LaMelo Ball who are looking to be successful play making scoring wings. So I think players in the future are understanding the value of this play style and may be focusing those kind of talents for the next decade to come.

Why haven’t someone thought of a all big men line up with max wingspan In a 3-2 zone
@GregoryFord98

The Bucks do this, and they used to do this to the Warriors, that's why they matched up so well. Harrison Barnes, Bogut, and Green were their tallest rotational guys. The bucks started MCW, Giannis, Jabari and Brook Lopez which are all towers
@t4d0W
@t4d0W 4 года назад
You need a perfect storm of personnel with the wingspan, size AND the effort. The Raptors if they wanted to can have that with Ibaka/Siakam/OG Anounuby/Norm Powell (6'10" wingspan)/Lowry along with interchangable parts like Boucher (7'4" wingspan), Gasol and a few others. Its rare enough to find people with length AND talent to use it on offense like Towns or DeAndre Ayton. But its even more rare to find someone with the complete package to play both ends of the floor like Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, etc.

This era of superstar scorers, spacing, and ranged assassins would decimate and overwhelm any era of basketball. Everyone always says how physical the '80s, '90s, and early '00s were, and there was hand-checking and all this, but if you look at the data there were more fouls called back then than in today's game. I grew up watching the last of the Jordan era and the early '00s Pistons, and there just wasn't anything like there is in today's game. There was no KD, or Steph/Klay, or Giannis, or Harden, or Luka, there just wasn't these physically imposing and basically unguardable scorers, with respect to Kobe, T-Mac and Iverson.

@@mcbuckets813 He plays very litle like Harden,like they like step back 3pt. that is about it.Luka post up sometimes when he got litle guy on him it happens sometimes and Bird played SF and Luka is PG but if they trade positions they would play similar.

gospa ironija If they switched positions? Can’t really go on what if’s when comparing players. Bird played like a big. Luka doesn’t. He plays like a point. Brings it up the court gets the team into sets. He’s closer to Ginobli than bird

Interesting pattern, the players' ages are (as of 7-Dec-2020): 35, 31, 26 and 21. This is a 4, 5, and 5 years difference. so if we assume we don't add Jukic to the list, does it mean every 5 years or so comes this type of a "generational" talent?
@devvv4616
@devvv4616 4 года назад
you don't necessarily have to be big. You just have to be a very smart player and a great iso player. Kyrie can do this as well if he had the court vision. Trae Young to a certain degree too. Dame. Curry. etc.

My prediction is that the traditional point guard becomes less common as point-forwards become the norm. Point-forwards have the height for better vision and are less vulnerable on defense than traditional point guards. Bigger players are playing smarter, and shooting better than ever, and as we enter the generation of players who grew up watching the Warriors dynasty, that trend will only continue. There are only a handful of truly elite smaller point guards left in the league (i.e.: Steph, Kyrie, Kemba, Dame, maybe one or two others). I'm sure we'll reach another pivotal period in basketball history soon though, and the game will evolve again.
