This is the first "overview" video I've seen that actually took the time to discuss hard and soft lighting and how to use it. Most videos only discuss positioning and ignore the type of light falling on your subject.

NEW STUDIO AREA ... I have a green screen background and I have a white board which I want to stand in front of for making some videos. I have two light boxes, four hardware store clip lights with the reflective cone and two "umbrella" lights. All sport daylight corrected CFL bulbs (BIG suckers). I am a neophyte when it comes to lighting. The white board loves to act as a "mirror" of sorts to show any lights in front of it. Moving the light main to the side to avoid the reflection produces a lot of obvious shadows (ICK). I am also having trouble evenly illuminating the green screen background (my chroma keying in post production is a real challenge to get right and I often have to mask out parts of the subject to avoid semi-transparent subjects). What kind of advise can you give me on this?

Which is generally considered more flaterring, direct lighting with more defined shadow, or the softer lighting & shadow? I always hear people attribute the lighting for their flattering photos and it seems the brighter and more direct the light, the better they look in my observation. I'm just a beginner, though.

damn this tutorial helped me out more than anyone I watched today about lighting. i wonder if a blank white wall would work for portraits. Keep in mind that i'm using a f/3.5-5.6 lens so if there are any imperfections it may not be blurred out, especially if the subject is close to the wall. other than that, would it work if i got the subject to move away from the wall?

You may not shoot personal branding just curious. Thank you and Happy New Year!
