The law changed under Proposition 47 in Nov 2014. Under the new law, if the amount of the forgery is $950 or less, it can only be filed as a misdemeanor and carries a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.
But if the amount of the forgery exceeds $950, it can be filed as felony forgery. As such, it carries up to 3 years in jail or California state prison.
