Forgery can be charged in situations where one creates, uses or alters a document with the intent of defrauding someone. The classic example is signing someone else's signature without their permission. But under Penal Code 470, California law actually defines forgery much more broadly.
Forgery can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the amount in question.
