Or: How I learned to love the ocean. Try this challenge out yourself! No commands needed, go nuts! :D -Socials Twittor - / ashbiddo Thanks for watching! Let me know if you wanna see more in the future!
Grass Gators don't actually die when they reach the deeper ocean, they are diving down to swim back to the Waterlogged shallows, likely to prevent then from swimming out of the biome
it’s probably better for u to use illumination circuit instead of night vision on boat cause you can help ur friend. although illumination circle light is small you’re already stuck on the boat anyway
Would love to see you try this again, with the crab king as the final objective. Also, you can use the boat magnets to make a sort of "boat-train", that way you would have plenty of space, plus its just really cool
Some advice for closing (turning off? I don't know the term) sails on boats, I'm sure you've noticed it says "heave" to roll up the sail, and then says "Ho!" about halfway while the sail is being rolled up. If you press the button to roll up the sail again when "Ho!" appears, you will get a massive bonus toward your sail pull-up speed! Small tips aside, this is great don't starve together content, Your mic setup is great, Your editing is great, and you will certainly gain a large following if you keep up a regular upload schedule. Can't wait to see what is next, keep up the good work!
Beefalo wool would have been very useful for crafting lures, also I'm surprised you didn't get any pig skin with you. My friend and I were doing this challenge but with 10 days allowed on all land (including all islands) combined. It's a fun way to play the game and I go with Wendy just because of monkey pirates, she is the only character I feel confident facing them. I would love to see you try this challenge again but maybe with some better prep (try to get a crockpot and a drying rack, they are gamechanging for this challenge).
Its the one thing that just passed my mind! I knew I was forgetting SOMTHING after prep. Little did I know the one thing we forgot was the one thing I needed to not enter a death spiral. Whoops.
It would have been cool to see him set up multiple boats under a massive tree and use that as his "base" instead of just moving all the unnecessary things too
Yeah. We realised that a bit too late that we could of totally done that as per the rules. Think of this video as "One boat only" challenge instead then. Maybe for attempt 2 it'll be different? :)
I definitely think surviving indefinitely is very possible, especially as wurt, since wurt is unaffected by wetness. Sure she still gets wet but the campfire is right there and once you get the summer and winter fish it really becomes quite easy. Kelp is good enough food and the 2 fish nullify all 4 seasons dangers when combined with wurts wetness protection
I'd really like to see the banter tbh, that bit about punching Walter and him losing sanity is hilarious! As for the ocean, yeah it's not the most optimized way to get resources but it's a fun and relaxing way. For Spring, I think you should focus on getting raincoats asap to use them in Spring, the only difficult resource is the 2 tentacle spots but you could have gotten them both in your prep during this challenge and in the marsh biomes in the caves for the previous challenge. It's 100% protection and 10 days durability, and definitely the best option for runs where you can't get the eyebrella. It also even protects from freezing in Winter as a bonus if you need that.
i really love how just two characters make such an incredible combo during challenge runs like these, would've really liked to see other characters that might have, willow could have been a neat choice if there were characters that provided some sanity bonuses, the others i'm unsure about but at some point they'd need to spread out the boats to avoid running out of space
Lol yeah I definitely questioned your WX-78 pick. Aside from it just being annoying while you're rowing, it's also a straight up death sentence in spring if you can't get 100% wetness protection. These videos are fun.
@@BiddoBamss Even if you had an umbrella, you might still have the problem that you can’t repair it since you need hounds teeth for sewing kits. But I guess if you just grabbed enough pig skins you can keep crafting umbrellas at least to last you through one Spring. You did mention possibly putting down a pig house on the boat which could be dangerous and overall a bother, but what could have actually worked could be to have set up another boat just for the pig house. In any case, great video. You posted this just today and there are already so many comments here
21:10 I love that that's the song Maxwell was forced to listen to for eternity in adventure mode. Now we too can enjoy the Maxwell expereince, of slowly losing our minds listening to this song!
I've lived through winter, though not soley on boat life. Monster meat plus kelp will give meatballs, so 2 boats, and a crock pot may be useful for any future attempt if there are 2 people.
This is proof the Malbatross is the worst boss, with the only time it is a threat to your way of life, is when you avoid fighting it after accidentally spawning it.
Incredible video! I recently tried an ocean base world, that turned into a full on Lunar Island base. It's a shame that the drip feeding of ocean content over the course of The Return of Them updates left so many players with the impression that the ocean is boring or empty. There's so much out there! Plus, all the little boat buffs in The Waterlogged update have made sailing so much more fun. Can't wait to see what underappreciated feature of DST you tackle next!
Yeah I remember back when boats were first added... they were slow, fragile and would never stop so would just drift away if you didnt have them anchored. I'm suprised to see just how much better they are nowadays!
@@BiddoBamss Also now they're far less fragile when it comes to sea stacks and the likes, so you have much more of a margin for error to ram into them and not get holes in your boat.
awesome video!! if you ever do this challenge again there are a number of really good crock pot dishes for this challenge specifically! figatoni - requires 1 fig and 3 vegetables, at least one of the vegetables has to be of higher quality (corn cod or popperfish grant this!) figatoni gives meatballs level hunger for cheap ingredients beefy greens - requires 1 leafy meat and 3 high quality veggies (seaweed wont do!) great hunger and other stats if you have corn to spare fish sticks - 1 fish, 1 twig and 2 filler, this filler can be monster meat and fish sticks is a great cheap healing food, like pierogi Surf n Turf - 2 big meat 2 big fish, the meat can be monster meat! great for sanity which can be a problem in spring
Fire control. Need a way to deal with wildfires in summer they will burn the boat. The challenge is to survive on the ocean, was one boat only an unofficial rule? Under a canopy you can make boat bases (Canopy stops lighting and wildfire). Wurt is fantastic ocean girl. Loves water, veggie bonus, no pigs. A little nitre for a boat with endothermic fire pit and summer is as cool as winter is warm. Neat watching you learn as you went. I like the ocean content myself. If you allow for island pillaging there is risk/reward to winter Moon Quey island raid. The broken machinery drops wires and cutstone, so nautopilot. Portal can spit out rocks. The little bugs on the island drop lightbulbs. Pirate bandannas boost some sailing stat. Nice to see people playing in the ocean instead of ignoring it for once ^_^ I love to play Wurt and sail for things
If we got to summer, my idea for fire control was hoping to get spittlefish! And yeah, as I said in the vid, Wurt is one of if not my favourite character! Moon Quay was off-limits for now, since I may be doing a moon quay only video at some point and didn't wanna take away from that! However, next ocean only run will include all islands!
Spent a lot of time solely boating on pub servers myself, it's usually a mostly peaceful time sailing about and making pitstops for supplies on occasion. Very entertaining and nice challenge video, nice to see others appreciating the seas.
Fun additional complex thing: If you have the Christmas event enabled then you could have gotten Manure in the early game, to allow you to make Christmas trees for renewable logs, and a pig house for renewable manure too!
I find it amusing how you were being agitated by that music box song playing constantly, especially since the song is called "ragtime" The song that was agitating Maxwell during his time on the throne, playing forever
I put this in as background noise but 13:00 came up and i was laughing for like 2 minutes straight. Yall are great, im glad i found yall super underated 👍 edit: would LOVE for you to post the uncut/unedited versions! Id watch the hell outta that
Boating in Winter is one of the best possible things to do if you have done prep, being able to explore the world for free and not have to make fires as often is huge. It is always nice to be able to do that and ignore the season.
Sometimes I still play like I did when I first picked up DST, being deathly scared of Winter. Glad I did this challenge so now I know winter is a literal non-issue out on the sea!
This was a really funny and entertaining video, so good job. The idea was also cool, hope to see more, maybe in some retry over some challenges (not lunar island because i think that you 2 will try to suicide in 2 seconds) and i have no clue over other possible videos, but i'll sure check it out. It's always good to see good and new content on dst.
I find it very ironic (and funny) how you chose a robot for a challenge involving only being on the ocean. And that the restriction “shouldn’t be that big a deal” .
fun run!! I was also in your place a while back, having avoided the ocean for the longest time. Eventually though one year I was fed up with being underground for the summer, and decided to make a boat with an endothermic fire/etc and try to brave out the summer on the seas instead! It was there I learned how fun it could be out there and all the neat ways to survive.
I hate the ocean in DST, I just Co through it to reach moon island when I want avocado bushes. I don't play for quests like helping Pearl or anything related to get the opal for archives and finally Celestial Champion.
Man you definitely needed to have a crockpot on there before even setting sail, it's just so extremely vital as monster meat has literally no use without it, unless you want to go insane or play webber.
only just started the video but worth mentioning that WX uses they/them canonically, not he/him! excited for this challenge though, I'm in the same *boat* when it comes to ocean exploration in DST, except I haven't even gone to the lunar island yet.
yeah i was going to point this out too. it's always kind of hard to watch videos containing them since people will misgender them the whole time 99% chance :(
Tig seems rather reluctant to despawn Abby. Why's that? I would've thought it an easy way to deaggro the gators or Malbatross (even things currently targeting one of you two, if you get Abby to draw aggro). Anyway, I hear vague mentions of a "next ocean-only run"? I would love to see what improvements you can make!
Wx was a nice idea for a character because if you can survive in the ocean with a robot, you can survive with anyone. On the other hand, Warly could help with cooking figatonis, surf'n turf and barnacle linguine.
"The ocean is underappreciated" I get your point, but ngl, ill never touch that part of dst again, where monkeys stole all my endagame loot and even after like 20 stashes I didnt get anything back, as well as the time that my krampus sack sank with another few of my op items lol... I mean the ocean is cool and all but if im gonna get glitched out like that, then no thanks...
Maybe next time you could try to mess with nautopilots to tug more boats along to your main one? You need frazzled wires for it so i don't know how many you could actually manage to get before having to leave for good.
you talked about losing more resources each time you die because you get revived immediately so you could just revive later in times of need :D and if you are worried because wendy still needs food its still one person so food and resources aren't that big of a problem if you do that another thing you could do is to heart spam so that if one of you get hit to say Malbotross and almost die you wont need the hp to craft the heart
One dryer would turn this challenge from a nightmare into a paradise. Also, Malbatross attacks you if you grab any bass near him, so that's why it attacked. Also, you know you can make multiple boats, right?
Bro is goated I have seemed enticed by the calm atmosphere if the challenge vids! Please continue also how about a A specific biome challenge. May he to easier but is interesting
You bet we're gonna be doing some single-biome-only ones soon! Got a mod that makes it so all biomes are seperated as islands to make that idea easier to enforce!
The year of events are just there to give easy resoures. Year of the bunnymen was just used to get easy steel wool. You get a fully decked out boat with this update.
Great video! Id love to see full 100 days content, especially the cave one. If there is any way you could try to actually do 100 days in the caves, it would be much appreciated.
I wouldn't mind doing a full 100 Day video, it's just that (And we attempted this before) it takes a long time to record, and most importantly, script. Since it gets kinda boring especially on the ultra-limiting challenges, I'd rather just do a ingame year instead of going for 100. But we'll see! Maybe I can work somthing out :)
I think walter could be a nice choice for sanity. also dried kelp restored 10 sanity and you can make 4 of them each day with 1 drying rack. that + one crockpot for meatballs and i think you should be able to have food and sanity checked. I wonder if you have enough time to rush Dragonfly along with getting all the other resources for the boat - but logs are less of an issue- the bigger issue was stone i think. Anyway cool video.
I just realized, you guys are lucky you didnt get the Donut map we got, Pearls island was in the center so if you went to the outside water you'd have never been able to reach Pearl, that map was so cool, we had set up in the oasis which attached to the weeds desert so we had Grass and twigs for years
This was a really cool challenge, I might have to try it with my friend!! I wonder if Winona and Wurt would be a good combination, for the trusty tape and Wurt's fishy companions!! Thanks for doing this!
If you made a drying rack you could have turned the see weed into a sanity food with about a day of drying for each one. Also did you put a restriction on multiple boats or just decided it would be too costly?
You should do this challenge again with 5 days of prep time instead of three as to make your boat a little more robust. Maybe try and do the same things you did here but a little faster now that you know the path you'll take, get that crock pot, and definitely an anchor.
I haven't watched the video yet but I gotta comment the answer. You can survive INDEFINITELY, with the right supplies. I have memorized a blueprint in my head of a "luxury boat" as I call it, which allows full survivability throughout all seasons, with your only limitation being how many sewing kits you can bring with you to repair the beefalo hat or the deerclops hat. However, if you go out as wormwood or wurt, you won't have to worry about the deerclops hat, and you could actually fully rely on a furnace thermal stone combo for both winter and spring to not freeze. I can get into more details if you want but this is almost a cakewalk, if that dang pirate raid mechanic wasn't a thing!!!
It might've been better to make drying racks on the boat, or make a new boat entirely with how many boards you got. But back to the drying rack, dried kelp is great as it gets rid of the negative stats it gives you, and can be a decent way to get sanity. Plus kelp grows back super fast and in every season. Plus plus you got so much meat that you can turn it into jerky, another great way to get health and sanity. Problem is space. But you could make multiple boats under the massive tree so it's safe from lightning strikes and could be an actual base instead of a small portable one. And since Pearl's quests are fine, you coulda dug up berry bushes and fertilized them as that's a mission. Or planting 8 flowers so you can have a constant stream of butterfly wings and flowers. Heck, with that, you could make a pretty parasol, and that, coupled with a hat and the tree, and you'll have 100% wetness protection, and since a firepit is nearby, you can actually dry off.
Oh, if you didn't know, you can click the sails again when they go from 'Heave!' to 'Ho!', and it lets you raise them quicker! I only learned this my last time on the ocean a few weeks ago. It would have also been cool if you started genuinely basing on the ocean. Build a few boats with anchors under the big tree, and you could survive in luxury! Did Tig know how to recall Abigail? If you click on her while holding the flower (No need to get in range or anything, just click her on your screen with the flower on your cursor), she'll disappear, and anything after her will stop attacking.
Spinner bait only nabs big sea fish (color determines what time of day it''s most attractive) spoons the smaller bait nabs all fish (execpt vegtable type fish [popper fish/corn cod, fallounder]) seeds are the best gerenic bait so long as you let them sit and dont consantly reel with berries being the best low teir bait Edit: "the music was starting to get a bit grateing" Maxwell in solo Don't starve *flashbacks*
I make a boat base in public servers every time; 3 days is madness, it takes me ~14 to prep. Having a drying rack, crockpot and bird cage/“crow’s nest” is a lifesaver
