Was that shared appetizer the start of something beautiful? Did that absent-minded hair flip actually speak volumes? WIRED challenged three experts: Former FBI Agent and body language expert Joe Navarro, communication expert Anne-Maartje Oud, and behavioral scientist Abbie Marono to observe 5 couples on dates-and guess how long each pair had been together.

I don't like that they separated dating time and marriage time, simply because someone could have married 6 months into dating and another couple 10 years. Their body language would be extremely different in that case

This is the exact comment I was looking for. Thats not science, This (at best) is an educated assumption... @SUPERZAYAN1

@@yasedkyThem guessing how long they’ve been together was an educated guess sure, but what about everything else. The body language cues pointed out are based in psychology and were spot on
@VictorKDurand
@VictorKDurand 11 дней назад
That's not how it works. In a criminal trial they would 1. Have a lot more visual evidence than 5-min clips. Also always cross-referenced with other types of evidence that has nothing to do with body language (phone call logs, gps coordinates over time, fingerprints, etc) 2. They are only asserting deception, dishonesty, ill-intent (or intent in general) exhibited by the person or persons. 3. They would study and verify with peers over and over for a long time before presenting something in a trial. The question 'how long have they been dating' is in this way a lot tougher to answer, because it answers quite a lot of questions, contrary to my number 2 point which basically answers only 1 out of 3 questions.

It would be cool if they had a version with signers, too. Especially tactile signers! And have a few deaf and blind/deaf experts (on body language or on culture or on signing) to provide a commentary, maybe after the body language experts give their guesses, explaining how maybe they would interpret things differently. Different cultures would be cool, too! In that case, they could have a “actually, this was filmed in X country, and in that country, CYZ gestures mean this…” twist, to see if they could pick up on that (like “huh, I would associate this with this normally, but they seem too comfortable…” etc) or no

The idea that you "stop flirting" after being together for years is such a stupid generalization. Some people really value flirtation and ensuring their partner feels attractive, well after marriage. I feel like a lot of this is just picking on random behaviours and over analyzing it, which is why they got most of them wrong. It's fun but no science.
@tessaoshea5697

@@tessaoshea5697 No, not really. Flirting is just playfully expressing your attraction to someone
@tessaoshea5697
@tessaoshea5697 20 дней назад
@dunnowy123 maybe it's a question of definition but my understanding is that 'flirting' is that way of showing your affection in order to attract attention. It seems that that is the way they are defining it in that video. Once you're married and happy, the two of you will have a love language. It will include ways of playfully expressing love but you already know the other person is interested so it will be different. Of course, a married couple can choose to actually flirt, but it doesn't come up naturally.

@spinthepickle1244
@spinthepickle1244 7 месяцев назад
I think Navarro kinda covered that early in the video when he said normally they'd be looking at other information as well. They're just doing the best they can with the setup Wired gave them. Maybe their interpretations would have been more in line if they had a baseline. I watched an episode of Sorted earlier where they were challenged to recreate a dish they had never seen or eaten. They were just given the ingredients and the dish name. The closest to replicating it won. That's also... pretty dumb. It's not an accurate representation of how anyone would try to replicate a dish served in a restaurant is. I think both a real in depth approach to body language analysis would be more interesting and watching the guys cook after tasting the dish would be more entertaining!

They should have informed them of the pas too, not just the milestone. A blind date is so nerve wracking versus being married 1year versus being together 14 years and married for four…

This is probably nothing but those chairs don't look that comfortable lmao This could explain the sitting back and forth to try to find a good position to chill and have a conversation. Funny how they thought the most flirty ones were on a good first date... I've been married for 13 years we've been together for 20 and we're super flirty and touchy

I only just started watching the video, but I assume they know they're being filmed, so some of the nervousness that's observed could easily be due to that.

shouldn't this be filmed secretly? I feel like people being aware that they are on tape skews the results.

Even if they got signed permission afterwards, filming secretly first would be a major consent issue.
