--
Your eyes get heavy and gradually close… But wait! It’s only lunch time and you still have so much to do. Would taking a nap help? Or would it derail your day? Well, that depends on a few things- especially what stages of sleep the nap includes. Sara C. Mednick details the cognitive benefits of napping, and explores the optimal length and time of day for a quick snooze.
Lesson by Sara C. Mednick, directed by Qian Shi.

The best naps are when they just happen with no plan. You sit down it's oddly comfy then you're just out for a hour but it feels like you slept six, then you have a super productive day.

I miss coming home from high school, opening my bedroom windows for a breeze, turning on my favourite comfort DvD, and then snoozing. I'd open my eyes, the sun would be gone, I'd be disoriented, but then I'd smell and hear my parents cooking supper. Those were some of my favourite naps.

The thing about REM sleep being most prominent in the mornings makes a ton of sense, whenever I’m sleeping in on a weekend and I wake up but then go back to sleep, I get really weird dreams that I can wake up from at any time but I’m not necessarily controlling them, I just kinda know I’m dreaming

- A sleep cycle lasts 90 mins, has 4 stages - A nap can last b/w 5 mins to 3 hrs - 5 to 30 min nap: easy to wake up from as it stops short of stage 3/deep sleep - 30 to 60 min nap: memory transfer from short term to long term storage, deliver cognitive benefits of deep sleep but most difficult to wake up from - 90 min nap: easier to wake up from than stage 3 as brain is quite active during REM sleep - Conclusion: Take naps in 30/90 min increments: 30, or 90, or 3 hours (two 90 minute cycles) - Morning naps dominated by REM, and evening naps by deep sleep - Naps are not for everyone

When I was in elementary school I would be tired during the day because of an abusive household, and high school I had a lot of sleep deprivation because of my depression, and I would just crash during the day at school sometimes. Working as a teacher now, I try my best to be as understanding as possible with my elementary students, because you can't learn if you are deprived of sleep. Even if it means missing one lesson, it makes them much more productive throughout the rest of the day. Sometimes I even talk with the student that is having the problem and decide that if they need a break to just let me know.
@greg_216
@greg_216 2 года назад
My father taught high school math for a few years. He had one student who frequently fell asleep in class. Turns out his father had died a few years prior and he had a night job stocking grocery store shelves just so his mom and his siblings had enough money to put food on the table. That student changed his perspective on sleep, and he never woke a sleeping student again. His telling of that story made me a more empathetic person when it comes to viewing sleep as a biological need and not a character flaw.

The best nap is when you get up in the morning and then a few hours later you feel sleepy even while it is still morning and you crawl back into your still warm bed. You feel aware of your surroundings but in such a cozy warm comforting drowsy way. You tend to drool 🤤 in a warm slow way and you feel peace. The best nap of my life experience: It was my first year at the University. It was heavy winter outside with snow everywhere. There I was studying in a study place on almost top floor of a university building. The place was super cozy. It looked like some renesanse erra library and it had big window walls on 1 side. Everything was in wood. That day it was around pm and it started tocget darker. Snow was falling outside. I was there since 11am studying sitted on a desk facing the curved glass wall and each time i looked up the view was mesmerising. It was like a fairy tale. And inside it was very warm. There were only a few more people that day there. At one point i just put my hands on the desk and then put my head down on my hands and iwas gonne... The 10minutes before i fall asleep were the most pleasure you fan imagine. After i wake up i felt like reborn. As if i slept 100 years

Rules of thumb I follow (that are basically the simplified points of this video): - 5 to 30 minute nap (MAX) for a power nap to get the blood flowing - 90 minute nap if I have enough time and/or really need a bigger boost - 60 minute naps are a NO GO. They will only mess you up and that’s where the “dead” feeling comes from. Take naps in 30/90 min increments: 30, or 90, or 3 hours (two 90 minute cycles). - DO NOT NAP AFTER 4 PM. Try to hold out till at least 7 before falling asleep for the night. Otherwise your sleep schedule will be messed up due to Circadian Rhythms, and as the video mentioned, less deep sleep/harder time falling asleep. Your body needs that ‘tired’ and a schedule to know when to release melatonin. It’s hard but you’ll thank yourself later because you’ll both get to crash as soon as your head hits the pillow, and it’s easier to have a schedule if you stick to it in the beginning. Sleep health is so important and I strongly encourage anyone who lends a ear to make better sleep choices. Poor health is so normalized these days and it’s amazing to see what simple choices can lead to improved physical and mental health.

The equal split between nappers and nonnappers is really interesting. I wonder if the split developed as a response to maintain awareness as a group throughout the day. I remember when i took a nap when i was a kid, i usually take naps in the afternoon but this time i woke up and the sky had a different color, it looked like a sunset but i wasn't sure. I kept on asking if it's the next day already and they kept telling me no, i couldn't check via smartphone yet cause it wasn't that popular back then. I eventually found out that it's still the same day, it's just that the sunset has come earlier around 5 pm.

I don’t understand “10 minute naps”, like do you set an alarm for 10 minutes later as if you’re gonna fall asleep in 1 second or what
@Ellie-jl3vk
@Ellie-jl3vk 2 года назад
@@zerinaimsirovic5419 This is my problem with scheduling alarm times for naps and at night. 20min nap? Okay, I'll set it for 20min from now. But if it takes me 8min to fall asleep, it's no longer a 20min nap.

Its just either you take 30mins or 90mins. Waking up in a Sleep Cycle is bad. And after 30mins (as she mentioned in the video), you wake up better. For my experience napping for 30mins (not any minute longer!) has helped throughout tiredness in the day. I can recommend.
@samdaniels6987

You should take naps that last maximum 9 minutes. After 9 minutes your body starts to think you are ready to properly sleep and if you were to wake up approximately 15-20 minutes after you start your nap then you will feel tired straight afterwards, not energised. The perfect nap time is 9 minutes 👍

I was in basic training for the Army a few years back, and I remember sitting on the floor listening to the Drill Sergeant's lecture. I was really tired, and struggling to stay awake fearing the repercussions of falling asleep . All of a sudden I felt great. I was able to focus, and listen intently using my newly gained burst of energy. Then BAM! I snapped awake. The sound of the drill sergeant yelling at me as my alarm clock. To my utter horror I realized that I was dreaming. Simply dreaming that I was listing to the drill sergeant's lecture with such wonderful attentiveness. Anyone who has ever been in the service can use their imagination on what happened next lol.
