@@TheHumbleMarksman Yes they are and often more range time too than a regular review might need. Then after all of that there will be at least a few viewers upset when you don't tell them what would be best for them. It's interestinng stuff though. When I did all those doublestack 1911s I found it interesting to see how the weight distribution differed from one to the next, but since they were also all differently built it was tough to see if it was weight distribution or other qualities impacting my shoting experience.

I love my Canik Rival S. One has the medium weight Lok brass grip, with W74 tungsten guide rod with 12lb. recoil spring run 147gr. Fenix ammuntion and have brass magwell. My other Rival S has W74 tungsten guide rod with 12lb. recoil spring, lok brass magwell and Mag-mo Edge grip which is a total GAME CHANGER!! That grip is amazing my favorite by far. Traction/grip you get with Mag-mo edge grip combine that with the extra weight is amazing!!! Love your videos!!! Cha-Cha- Ching

You praised the brass grips a lot but preferred the G10 grips + tungsten guide rod in the end. What can be concluded here? That a 50/50 weight balance is a good way to go? Slight front weight bias (tungsten guide rod) is a good thing? But you also mention the Sig moves around less with the brass grips. Sounds like weight balance/performance ratios are different from gun to gun...? Not trying to be overly critical, you're the only guy on YT getting this nerdy and I appreciate your efforts. On that note, I really wanted to see any benefits from the LOK brass backstrap I tried on my PDP... but couldn't find any. I found the gun's recoil impulse was even sharper with it (something to be said about polymer's shock absorption?)and having 4 oz. extra weight at the butt of the gun didn't affect much at al as far as tracking, return to zero, etc. Maybe that's not a surprise but some people make it sound like brass backstraps are the second coming of Jesus or something. Anyway, keep up the good work and sharing your observations 👌

Absolutely here for the degal! It's interesting to me, because currently I'm running a very very nose heavy gun and it's actually showing a lot better behavior at speed. Then again my TLR1 is torqued down to the point you need a tool to remove it, and it's a g34 size upper on a Glock 19 size grip that's stippled to the point it is actively reprofiling my hand if I put more than 150 rounds down at a time XD

This is a great topic that doesn't get enough conversation. I see people decking out their pistols with crazy Light/Optic combos and you can see in the range videos the weapons jumping all over in different ways that don't look good. The worst I have seen was a Beretta APX compact with Steiner optic the size of a mailbox. He was getting hits, but the heel rocking motion was crazy. I don't see the good in it.

David, I recently ran a G34, G17 and G19 back to back. Same triggers. All three had minimal felt recoil. The shocking thing for me was the G17 had the worst impulse. It seemed to make the front sight oscillate more. The G34 was better but the clear winner was the G19. It was the easiest to get quick, accurate hits with by a noticeable margin.

@@MrNgMichael Yeah, I like the feel of the G17/34 grip in the hand more, but the G19 definitely performs better for me. No G45 experience, so who knows how much slide vs grip is playing a role in my case. The strangest part is the G34 also performed better, so I assume it must have something to do with slide weight/balance making the pistol track easier for me. Splits below .20 are not a problem with any of them but the targets reflect my feelings of the G17 having less predictable/repeatable tracking in my hands.

I live in Germany and unfortunately we are only allowed to own two pistols here. I was thinking about buying a "sport-compact", as „The Gentleman Gunner" calls it. I watched your videos on the CZ Shadow 2 Compact and the Walther PDP SF Compact and wanted to ask which of the guns you think is better. Unfortunately there are hardly any people who have held both guns. Which one shoots flatter or faster? How is the precision? Which of the two would you buy regardless of the price? I really like your content and enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work! If anyone else has an opinion on this, I would be happy to hear it :) Greetings from Germany!

I competed with a metal frame gun that... despite having little felt recoil, it always felt bouncy and like I couldn't get it to track right back to where I shot. I then gave my Glock 34 that I had in the safe a chance, and have noticed it tracks better. The recoil isn't unmanageable, but the tracking and crispness of the slide feels much better.

Rock the Desert Eagle! Years ago (when it was still legal) a father and son duo brought Desert Eagles to the IPSC Australia nationals. They weren't the most competitive, but they had a ridiculous amount of fun Recoil isn't that bad, it's much more of a long heavy push than a nasty snap due to the sheer weight, gas system, long slide travel and duel recoil springs. The main challenge is getting a feel for the handling and how it likes to be held in order to run it fast.

What a timely video, I was thinking about buying the brass grips for my 92G LTT, they make my CZ 75B 41 oz (+9 oz) and it actually recoils nicer than a shadow 2 in terms of tracking. I am not sure what the 5 oz grips would do for the 92G LTT but I am just finding an excuse not to buy a 92 performance, I just love my 92G so much and don't like some things how they configured the 92xp. I don't run a WML either but it seems that they are so far below the pistol that they make it less stable. Think about when you lift weights, the further they are out from the core of your body, the more strength it requires to keep the same stability.

I like the front weight of the X300 on compacts the best, as I feel that they could use the up front weight (ie PX4 and G19). I also tried filling the battery compartment with #8 lead shot when shooting poor man's open with a glock and the Strike ind. Mass Driver on a G17 Gen 3. I think there's a certain point of too much weight (all personal prefence), but after feeling my friend's Shadow 2 and my own Glock 17 with a lot of muzzle end weight, I was still 10 oz off from his Shadow 2's weight at 32 oz for my "open" glock. I think adding 4 oz to the front of the gun for polymer framed guns will generally help with muzzle flip. I would like to know the different weights of your configurations, and also I know you were sponsored by the guide rod company, but I would also like to know your groupings with just the WML + grips only.

It's good timing that you came out with this video. I've previously been shooting a glock 17 with a surefire x300 at matches. I found that the gun was not good at speed and felt like it strained my wrists. At first, i thought it was the grip angle, but after flattening the hump i had the same issue. After watching some of your videos, you kept mentioning that weight in the grip is important. That's when I realized how front heavy I had made my gun. I started experimenting at the range without the wml and shot a match yesterday without it and came to a couple of conclusions. 1. The strain on my wrists was the leverage that the front heaviness was creating. 2. The gun recoiled more without the wml, but the recoil was much more consistent, and i could settle the gun faster. 3. The gun swung a lot better between targets without the light. The best way i can describe it, is that the wml recoil was unstable as it came back down. It caused the gun to almost bob on the downstroke, which caused shots to go lower and have more side to side deviation.

As you already said, the approach with light under a gun is questionable because light has it's own vibration as an almost separate part and adds more to equation than it subtracts. But there were, I can't remember the name, some kind of plates/weight that could be put under the barrel to add weight to the nose. That would be more interesting to explore. But for the life of me, I can't seem to recall what was the name of that system. Was it only for Glock, or CZs.... I can't recall.

As an engineer I try to think about the physics of this and apply engineering principles. There is a lot to think about when you start adding weight and looking at movement under recoil. Physics would say that the gun would rotate less under recoil if the weight is spread out more meaning weight in the grip and weight at the end of the barrel. Also you talk about balance which is moving the center of gravity towards the front or towards the back. Everybody knows about bore axis height and why that matters but similarly the location of the center of gravity up and down should matter for a similar reason. So from that standpoint more weight in the guide rod would help, weight down low such as in the grips and magwell would hurt. I remember the old race guns with optics mounted on a bridge mount above the moving slide. I always thought it would be helpful to add weight right there between the mount and the optic. If you have an old one of those hiding in the back of the closet that would make for an interesting experiment. I liked the video but I have no interest in the DE. Maybe 45 Super in an HK USP?

What recoil spring are you using with the tungsten guide rod? It looks like a flat spring in the B-roll.

I'm also interested in this. BSPS advises against the flat springs with W74 guide rods. If there's a brand of spring that work (big enough interior diameter), that would be great info

looking at the footage-- as your gun is gaining mass compared to the slide, the slide looks like it's slamming back pretty hard at the end of its action more and more. is that normal? that could explain some of the decreased accuracy you're seeing- the slide momentum could be kicking you a bit more. maybe i'm just seeing things

Can we see a comparison of all your full sized striker fired pistols in stock configuration with a working WML and factory +p duty ammo? Asking for a cop…

Commenting for the 50AE - do it please!!

Hmm...what finish should your 50AE DE have? It has to be gaudy but not too reflective in the sun. Btw. I think Battle Gnome made some DE holster for Ziga from Polenar. Maybe all black, but with huge engraving on the side in rainbow colours and of course brass grips so it isnt too light. Btw. try a video where you add the stuff here like heavy light but also one of the rail based compensators. Maybe in on of those combos it's helpful if there is enough gas volume. Then add all that to something ultra light like an Arex Delta.

One interesting question.... what weight recoil spring did you opt for with the W74 rod?

I used as close to stock as I could get with 18

I wonder if muzzle brakes/comps made out of tungsten would help since it's place on the very end of the muzzle and it would add more weight

What about slide length on a stock pistol for overall shootability and feel? Like 3.5" vs 4" or 4.5". I've heard that a longer slide tends to shoot a little softer and be slightly easier to rack. What about the sight(s) retuning to target?
@TheHumbleMarksman

Longer to a point seems to get a lesser recoil spring

Running a Desert Eagle in a competition would be hilarious. Of course, you’re a big guy who would do better at it than a smaller statured fellow. I say go for it, David. You would look like a boss.

I was interested in getting a tungsten guide rod after this video, but they don’t make them for any pistols I have; Glock 19X and a PDP 4” Compact. I’ll stick with ZR Tactical’s fat boy guide rods for now. That said, I am kind of amazed how much smoother the 15# spring and a fat steel guide rod made my PDP. This shit is real.

funny, I too have been watching my slow motion footage and have found that the WML is destabilizing my control. I thought it would be the other way around. its like its mimicking the recoils spring being to heavy. could that be the recoil spring is just right without the light and too heavy with the light?
