The whitish yellow on Google Maps does not mean desert. It simply means the lack of overwhelming floral coverage. That could be desert or it could be mountains, steppes, concrete jungles and so on. The Turkish inland is shown completely in that whitish yellow colour however it has not a single desert region. It has only 1 very tiny sand desert in Konya Province.

The US has its own Dungeness national nature preserve, the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge in Washington on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Its Dungeness Spit was named by British explorer George Vancouver in 1792, writing that its "low sandy point of land" greatly resembled Dungeness, so they called it "New Dungeness". The Dungeness crab is named after Washington's Dungeness Spit and is typically found from Alaska's Aleutian Islands down to Santa Barbara in California. For the one in England, Dungeness's name means "the headland at Denge", referring to nearby Denge Marsh, and the marsh in turn is first mentioned in 774 as Dengemersc, and means "marsh of the pasture district". My favorite desert has to be the Namib Desert! The desert’s unique geology is shaped by the convergence of coastal winds and the ancient Tsauchab River. Fogs that originate offshore from the collision of the cold Benguela Current and warm air from the Hadley Cell create a fog belt that frequently envelops parts of the desert. Coastal regions can experience more than 180 days of thick fog a year! While this has proved a major hazard to ships, as the coast's many wrecks litter the Skeleton Coast, it is a vital source of moisture for desert life, like DESERT RAIN FROGS! The surreal landscape of Deadvlei, with its petrified trees contrasting against white clay pan, adds a mysterious touch. The indigenous San people even call it "The Land God Made in Anger". Another favorite desert is Bolivia's Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat at over 10,000 square km! The Salar de Uyuni was formed as a result of prehistoric lakes evaporating, leaving behind a vast expanse of salt. During the rainy season, a thin layer of water transforms the flat into an enormous reflective surface, creating quite the mesmerizing spectacle! Maine has a desert around Freeport! Now like Dungeness, the Desert of Maine receives a lot of precipitation, the Desert of Maine's average annual precipitation is 50 inches and their annual snowfall is 72.1 inches, both far above the United States' averages, but why Maine has this technically not a desert is still very interesting. Basically as the glaciers in Maine started to melt, by about 13,500 years ago, the glaciers' retreat reached the Freeport area, where the land that would comprise the future Desert of Maine began to emerge from below the sea. At some point after the Desert area emerged, it became a sink for wind-blown sand, around 12,500 years ago. Then plants stabilized the sand deposit within a hundred years and became a forest. But farming eventually exposed the sand. It became a farm in 1821 when it was purchased by the Tuttle family. Like other Maine farmers, the Tuttles' methods of farming gradually depleted the soil of essential nutrients, and overgrazing produced widespread erosion of the topsoil, exposing a deposit of aeolian sand that was lying underneath. Eventually the entire farm became barren, the Tuttles abandoned the land in 1890, and in 1925, Henry Goldrup purchased the land and developed it into a tourist attraction

On the topic of biomes of the UK, the UK has rainforests but they're somewhat endangered in part because non-native species like some deer and sheep eat the saplings of these trees before they have a chance to grow. It's a good example of where nature restoration can't just be done with a hands-off approach. It needs human intervention to ensure these habitats can recover and continue to thrive into the long future, as they have been with us since the long, long past.

I spent last week walking around the Southwest's temperate rainforests. Wistman's Wood on Dartmoor is the most well known example, but if you know where to look there are far bigger, and much more impressive pockets of temperate rainforest clinging to the edges of the moors 😁 Not gonna reveal where though; I don't want them getting overrun by tourists 😂

Scallop facts: Scallop is a common name that encompasses various species of marine bivalve mollusks in the taxonomic family Pectinidae. However, the common name "scallop" is also sometimes applied to species in other closely related families within the superfamily Pectinoidea, which also includes the thorny oysters. Scallops are in the phylum Mollusca, a group of animals that also includes snails, sea slugs, octopuses, squid, clams, mussels, and oysters. These animals have two hinged shells that are formed of calcium carbonate. They have a well-developed nervous system, and scallops have anywhere up to 200 eyes that line their mantle! These eyes may be a brilliant blue color, and they allow the scallop to detect light, dark, and motion. They use their retinas to focus light, a job the cornea does in human eyes. A small minority of scallop species live cemented to rocky substrates as adults, while others attach themselves to stationary or rooted objects such as seagrass at some point in their lives by means of a filament they secrete called a byssal thread. The majority of species, however, live recumbent on sandy substrates, and when they sense the presence of a predator such as a starfish, they may attempt to escape by swimming swiftly but erratically through the water using jet propulsion created by repeatedly clapping their shells together. A pretty cool (not technical) desert is one located on Brazil's northern coast called Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The sand is carried to the park from the interior of the continent by the Parnaíba and Preguiças rivers, where it is then driven back inland up to 50 kilometers (31 mi) by winds, creating a series of sand dunes rising as much as 40 meters (130 ft) tall. During the rainy season, between the months of January and June, the rainstorms fill the spaces among the dunes with freshwater lagoons of up to 100 meters (330 ft) in length and 3 meters (10 ft) in depth. The water in the lagoons is prevented from draining by a layer of impermeable rock located beneath the sandy surface.

Fake deserts are a reality on many countries. Despite Brazil being gigantic it does not have a desert within its territory. However, there are places like Lençóis Maranhenses and Jalapão that look like deserts but do not fit the dryness requirements to be one. But also it has a very dry savannah (caatinga) that may be artificially desertified in the future

precipitation isn’t the only factor in how arid a region is, evaporation is equally important, an area with low rainfall and high evaporation will be arid, but low evaporation and low precipitation will not. Not sure exactly how relevant this is, but I think it’s important to not exclusively look at precipitation.

In Poland, we have a pretty much analogous structucture in Słowiński National Park, but most wouldn't call it desert, as it's a coastal patch of barren dunes. Again, as you've said in the beginning, it's all semantics - by definition, due to barenness, it *is* a desert indeed, even though it came to be due to sand accumulation rather than lack of water. We *do* however have a genuine desert, the Błędów Desert (Pustynia Błędowska), and I was told its one of three deserts in temperate continental Europe. The other two being in the much drier steppe, this one is surrounded by green fields and forests, making for a stark contrast. And it is a weird one, as it's a basin filled with sand that, for whatever reason, had dropped its groundwater water levels locally enough it became the place Afrikakorps trained at before being sent out to the deserts down south back in WWII. Oh, and the desertification appears to be fairly recent, and may have to do with medieval mining in the area. Interesting all around!
@braziliantsar
@braziliantsar 2 месяца назад
Heard about the polish desert a while back. It's funny because it looks like a tropical coastal region, but it's in the heart of Poland. Very interesting place. Right now, my country has no natural deserts, but the core of our shrubland/dry savannah could become one in the future. The closest thing now would be the Lençóis Maranhenses, an extense dune area that floods in a specific period

Just a reminder to everyone, England does not have a desert. A Desert is typically defined as anywhere that gets below 10” of precipitation a year, no where in England has this low precipitation. Also many people claim that their country has a desert, when in reality, its a Semi Arid Steppe, close but not a desert.

I think one of the big problems with biome designation is just that you're trying to apply strict borders to a gradual process for example the difference between West Scotland and Kent is ginormous on a national scale but insignificant on a world scale, but is it enough to define them separately? good question

I worked at that power plant for years, it rains all the time, definitely not a desert.

That's absolutely not a desert, it's just a wide beach. You can see the water and the vegetation on the opposite side at the same time. If that's a desert, any big boulder can be considered a desert, too. And parking lots would be man made deserts.

it's clearly called a desert because of tourism

Lobster rolls sound good, but I've never had one. The only place I know to get one is the Mall of America, but they also have sushi burritos, so I always get a sushi burrito (customizable sushi roll the size of a burrito).

Hey toycat, next time you’re in Vegas try Mystic Lobster Roll. I had one yesterday, I thought it was good and want to see if it meets your standards

From the map at the start, the diversity of biomes of the world is pretty underwhelming, I think we should have probably used a set seed with better biomes.

BWh and BWk in Koppen are desert. Rest isn't, simple as. BSh and BSk are semi-arid, so are kind of desert like especially on the drier side closer to BWh and BWk. Koppen Classification is supreme, biomes are determined by climates.

Its a grassland based off grass growing there. Its sparse but not a dessert

It's just the lack of vegetation, thus the means of life. It's deserted by people, so it's called a "desert".

Desert? There's not even any sand there. I'd say Denmark's "pretend" desert is more so a desert. It has actual sand dunes. Look up Råbjerg Mile.
