I was thinking that too but think of it in terms of how many friends and family and coworkers do you recognize by name and face? Then how many workers at places you frequent a lot (for instance when I worked someplace and went to a coffee shop near by I knew the main barista by name). That should be plenty there... Then add on actors, writers, etc. (I'm assuming those count because it never said you had to actually know them, just recognize face to name) My wonder is... if that does count actors, does that count fictional characters too like you mentioned? if so, does that only count real life fictional characters or drawn ones like from cartoons and anime?

I factor in these variables: shallowness, ulterior motives and friend collectors. The circle of friends will be smaller if these were applied to filter out what you don't need. For some people, social media is a popularity contest.

I have three best friends. :)) But other than them, there aren't really many other people I communicate with. About 3 people outside of my family, and my family (on a daily basis). I think a lot of this stuff depends on whether you're an extrovert or introvert, eh? As you can guess, I am quite introverted. xD

I'm a high school runner so I'm always going new places and meeting new people who already have a similar interests. At the state meet I could probably name all the distance runners and give a run down of their personality. I also feel really close with most of the people in my school and some surrounding schools. Depending on what you do I feel like that number can be cutting it short. It's also possible that who I'm calling my close friend calls me their acquaintance.

So, my first friend that I can count on and is still be on touch I've made when we were at 8th grade. Then, I only made my best friends at the last year of my high school and the very first year of my College I did a bunch of good awesome friends too. I overcome my insecurity and shyness with my new friends, they made me fell happy and good about living, we share a lot of memories, we care for each other and do drama together. I mean, I'm just really happy with my current situation right now cause I have been living 4/3 of my life with no good friends.

Having too many friends becomes a problem. Each one of them wants feel close to you than others. They want more time from you. And it's hard giving time to everyone at a time. If the 200 friends didn't want to be treated differently, I would be happy to have 200+ friends. Then if you get close to one of them the others r going to mind. But if everyone is occupied with something then it's alright.

I think that is true that social media is gonna change a lot our friendships and relationships. Not like, taking them away but maybe you have a relationship with someone from internet and you want to see them but because of economic problems and such you can't see them and ultimadly needing that fill up inside of you

I think something interesting that can be studied is school yearbook signatures. I went to a yearbook signing party yesterday and got 54 signatures total, but I wondered, "How many of these people am I close friends with?". My school has ~1100 students and 40-50 teachers and staff. I also wondered if I had the time to actually become close friends with everyone who signed my yearbook. Some of them saw me and said "Hey Emma!" and I had them sign my yearbook even though I didn't recognize them. (I'm bad with matching faces to names). Overall, a question I have is: how many of these people can I become close friends with considering the time and energy of all of us?

My best friend had around 300 people whom he considered friends. Most of them however felt like he was ignoring them because I think he couldn't keep up. We're not best friends anymore, sadly.

I think social media has definitely changed people's friendships (both good and bad) People you know in face to face might act differently online (for the worse) and some friendships START online and work their way up to facing them in real life and it's for the better-without social media they wouldn't have found that friend and they could have been friendless without them. I do think you can have a healthy amount of casual friends/aquatintences up to 150 but you're not going to be on the same level with each and every one of them. Some people do like, however, to hang out with a large crowd of casual friends rather than be close with a few friends.

Here's to add to your study: I have about 35 friends on facebook, and only two close friends in my circle, the rest are people I see now and then, coworkers and family. I wonder how people like me could influence the resultd for an up to date study about social behaviors! :)

My twin sister is my best friend. In high school we had a group of 6 very close friends (ourselves included) and 4 not-so-close friends. Unfortunately both of us have kinda lost touch with our other close friends. Now we have each other and some people we see more as acquaintances than friends... neither of us knows how to make real close friends as adults... obviously I could start by leaving the house.

I only have 1 best friend, I use to have like 7 when I was younger, but I can only keep you with one. Whenever I try spending more time with the other one, my brain can't take it, I just can't. Sometimes I'm lucky that I take a day off, and spend most of the day with some one that gets me in other ways. Like doing weird, and very strange stuff. Or I spend a couple of minuts with someone else If the other friend is talking with another one. But when I'm separated from my best friend, I find big interest in those who I know will say weird things to me, or understand/like something I do, which My other friend wouldn't in the same way.
