Hello, I'm an 11-years-old student in Korea!🥰 I'm learning English. Actually I still have so many grammar mistake and there are so many words that I don't know yet. But I think learning English is really interesting! And Your video was very helpful for me to learn a new language.💗 So I'd like to say thank you for share your tips. I am intermediate-advanced korean and when some of my friends talk fast and on difficult topics my head will hurt from concentrating for too long. In your native language you can relax cos listening is something you dont really concentrate on, but in a language you're learning, if you dont focus you can lose track of the conversation, so that 100% concentration for ages makes my brain hurt. Anyone else?

@@nathaliapereira9872 I guess it's hard to concentrate once you are a beginner, but when you have at least B2 level in any language, listening becomes much more comfortable. English is not my native language, but I watch a lot of things in English, and I don't even notice that it's a foreign language. The same goes for Russian.

@@nathaliapereira9872 it will come. No worries. It's just a natural learning process. Try to watch things you really like. This is my strategy, I watch things I had watched in English and I know what's going on already. This reduces frustration level quite a lot and you understand much more.

i’m the same way. i’m also intermediate-advanced and i can understand quite a lot of things as long as it doesn’t pertain to percentages or science *gladly this isn’t a common topic anyway in normal conversations*. words still sound very jumbled together and tend to only “hear” certain parts of a conversation i’m listening to so when it’s time for me to respond i just go...uhhhh 😭 perhaps we just need to focus on listening more? a friend recommended to listen to a video that i have difficulties in, slow it down and listen and slowly speed it up gradually. but not with a long video, maybe a minute or two or break long videos into increments.

yes. i posted a comment about this too, but i get easily distracted (ADHD) so focusing on korean takes sooOO much effort and it does tire me out for sure, and then i just zone out and start thinking about what i’m gonna do tomorrow, or the meaning of the universe or something

@StudyJoi Pointing out typos is a way to help, it makes people aware of their mistakes. It's awful when native speakers of a language are a total mess but I'm way considerate to foreigners, should I kiss other's feet and sugar coat every single thing in order to share insights? No thanks! As far as I'm concerned it's a waste of time , if your mouth is stinky you want someone to tell you right away and not a bunch of snowflakes around you wasting your time with indirect signs in morse code that something related to you is not "that good".

@@nicoleraheem1195 I'll put it in simple words, if someone is not willing to make mistakes and eventually learn from them, that person shouldn't do anything and stay in home. So the first thing to have on mind is not taking those things as a personal attack, I'll be relieved if someone corrects my English grammar by the way. The old excuse of other people making the same thing is empty, surely it's efficient to ignore inconvenient details in experiences with that mindset... Good luck improving, after all it's your right just to be like the rest!

I've just started my year abroad and omg the listening fatigue. Idk if this is what the question referred to but I speak German well enough to understand but I still have to pay more attention than I would in English. I end up zoning out a lot more and listening actually tires me out after long periods. I think a good way to tackle that would be to listen to spoken language in TV shows/films, that way you can stop and pick up where you left off if you need to take a break. Podcasts can be good too, but you won't get as many visual cues and they tend to cover more complex topics so I think that's probably better for an upper intermediate level.

If you can stomach it, a lot of podcasts are understandable at an upper beginner/lower intermediate level. You just have to pick familiar and predictable topics. I ended up improving my Hebrew listening skills a lot by listening to self-development podcasts. Now I can understand a lot of RU-vidrs, but I still struggle with TV shows and films.

Yeah, after a while listening I get a headache. For my better languages it comes more slowly, but it's definitely a thing.

Super interesting to hear about church life abroad. From my experience, it was hard to find a young adult church community when I was traveling abroad. I was able to attend church service in Paris, however given my little time, I did not get a chance to check out other communities. I love that you are still in the mix though. Even though I have a church out here in the states, I can relate to how difficult it can be to connect with community through Zoom and online service. Hope you stay safe and that you can find a local group too.

At the very beginning you can hear the melody, the rythm, and the beauty of the language you are learning. Much later when you can understand almost everything, it becomes like your mother tongue. You don't realise what impression your mother tongue makes on foreigners. Personally, I started learning French because it sounded so beautiful. And now when I'm fluent, I can't hear it any more. While someone is talking to me, I understand the message and I react. No sound impression... it's sad...

I totally understood what you mean! I absolutely love the sound of beautiful Germanic languages like Norwegian and Icelandic, so I'm afraid that, at one point, I won't be able to hear it anymore...

Haha I can totally relate to this! When I started learning Spanish, I thought it was the most beautiful language in the world, until I got better and that feeling started to go away. Then I started learning Italian, and thought it was the most beautiful language in the world, until I got better and that feeling started to go away. I started French almost a year ago and now the same thing is beginning to happen 😂

It seems so nice to have a family who loves other cultures! I mean wow! I'm always unmotivated when my family/friends ask me: "why u learning that language? U are doing it for nothing ugh" and they dislike other countries/cultures, so it's kinda sad cuz I can't talk to anyone about my language journeys and we can't travel anywhere since they have 0 interest lmaoo Cheers! Hi Lindie, even tho I never studied Spanish I can understand it since I was born in Portugal. I loved watching you read Spanish and loved even more watching you struggle to speak Spanish. I have been struggling to study Japanese for years and have studied some very beginner stuff in Korean and Mandarin, so every time I watch you speak any of this languages I'm always astonished and I have that feeling that you have learnt those languages like magic ! Even listening you speak a language you just started learning but I had never studied before would still sound astonishing to me, so I would always have that 'magic' feeling ! So I really enjoyed being able to understand you speaking it, I mean, I'm still astonished but it made me realize even more that you like everyone else also struggle speaking a new language and that's okay ☺️

Lindie, you are seriously so inspiring you got me learning more languages. Also is anyone here learning Japanaese if so can I have a bit of your advice/ routine. I'm basically self teaching myself, with online resources, but some days I feel like I'm not getting anywhere. I'm already bilingual I speak English and Spanish. P.S I also plan to learn Mandarin, Korean, Tagalog, and French. Honestly and more being a polyglot is my dream. But I'm going to do one first then do multiple.

In my time of learning japanese, the kanji and grammar are the most challenging parts. My advice is take your time especially with kanji and if you can already have a decent convo then you can concentrate on the grammar and expand your vocabulary. (Also if you master japanese grammar korean will be a bit easier for you because the sentence structure and grammar are similar)

@@Izumi-pw7zg oh wow! Those are the exact ones i used, very good books i dont think there are any better but if i find i'll let you know, To practise kanji you could read childrens books that have kanji, that helped me alot! :)

I've experienced listening fatigue! When I moved to north Charlotte, I found a Hispanic church around the corner. Spanish is one of my native languages, but it's the one I had the least exposure to in childhood. So I easily understood half of what they were saying, but the other half I tried to translate to French (my second language, which I had plenty of exposure to), and anything with no French cognate (including the -ra subjunctive, French has only the -se form) I tried to figure out from context. After 3-4 hours of this, I was exhausted!

When I'm frustrated and I can't understand anything in a language I'm learning I usually feel panic or frustration, but to relish the moment knowing that work will make it so that you will never be able to go back to the unknowing, wow, what a beautiful mindset and likely a more productive one! I just love that.

I am so inspired by you. I'm having a hard time studying my Chinese outside of the assignments we're give. We are given assignments in our workbook, text book and character book on a weekly basis along with quizzes and tests. In this digital age, we've had to submit a Voice Thread of us speaking on a specific topic and had to upload pictures to go with our presentation. I am much older than you, probably by several decades. I work full time, 40 hours a week, I also speak Spanish and French. I work as a Spanish medical interpreter in a large medical center. I come home drained. My job is emotionally, mentally and physically draining. I try to supplement my Mandarin Chinese by watching dramas in Chinese, RU-vid lessons in Mandarin, and some Chinese language apps on my phone. In a perfect world I'd have time to practice writing my characters but I'm just trying to keep up with the required assignments. We've transitioned from Pinyin and Hanzi to just Hanzi which takes me longer to read and understand the lesson. Luckily, the semester is almost over so my plan during break is to focus more on practicing my characters and writing full sentences. Like you said, it's whatever works for you. I have to be realistic. Hopefully I can become a polyglot someday. I speak, read and write 3 languages and working on my 4th.

I understand what they mean about the listening fatigue thing. I remember when I first started immersing myself in Japanese, it felt like my brain was overeating. 😆 I had days where I thought, "Oh my goodness I need to hear something in English!" Kinda similar thing happened with Spanish. But like you said, over time you adjust. My accent changes if I switch suddenly from one language to the other. 😂 I also used to put pressure on myself to study for a certain number of hours. Now it's more like: did you use your TL today? Yes? Good. It's less stressful I think. I don't like to read as much as I did when I was younger, but as a writer and poet, I know that it's important for me to do it because trying to write with very limited vocabulary is not how you succeed in life. 😅😅 Great tips Lindie!

I like to watch your videos when I feel unmotivated in my language journey. I study English C2 and German C1 as my faculty but I feel tired sometimes of learning for exams which have strict rules. As a tutor, I agree you learn with every person whom you teach. :)

Hi! Thank you for all your awesome videos. 💜 I'm a Latin & Ancient Greek student at university and just wanted to say that Biblical Greek is fairly easy compared to e.g. the Greek Plato uses. I'm sure you'd be able to pick it up rather quickly. 💜 Anyway, I'm German and know English, French (have to get into it again at some point tho), the two ancient languages I mentioned and am hoping to learn some Korean alongside my studies. 💜 You and other RU-vidrs and polyglots inspire me to keep going. 💜

i believe im a little late, but i do agree indefinately. when i was learning ukrainian. i literally found a show in ukrainian with a musician i listened too and watched it every morning until i finished the show. Submerge yourself, seriously it works . also @lindie botes , i saw a couple of your other content and i appreciate the honesty and effectiveness , seriously thanks and hope you are well and your loved ones too during these times.

I'm studying at home in a semi-lockdown environment. This is seriously a great, motivational video. I live in a town where I am the only language nerd. I just commented on another video of yours. I would say I spend at least 10 hours every day on languages, I listen to them while I’m eating breakfast, read the news in other languages, talk to friends in other languages, but especially when I am learning a new one, I can focus on that for many hours per day. I speak 10 languages now, and fluent in six of them.

Haha that's my problem too! I feel like whenever I'm most motivated to learn languages is when I am busiest with other things. It's almost like my brain is trying to find an excuse 😂

Wow! I'm amazed by listening to you! I wonder how it comes that you've been traveling your whole life, what your parents' work has been... I recently became a teacher of English, being 49 years old, and though I live in Argentina, I grew up speaking German, because all of my grandparents were European, and my problem is that I feel I've lost my German language while studying English for as long as ten years... 🙈 Life is not easy, but by God's means I hope to keep learning. I'm very pleased I've found you on your RU-vid channel. May Jesus bless you!

Actually taking a break from a language is good for the brain! The brain is constantly working subconsciously on things you've learned, even if you're not thinking about it. So if you learn a foundation of a language, get to intermediate, and then take a break... when you come back from that break you'll realize the language comes a bit more naturally and is easier to stick in your mind. Just don't forget to come back to it with the same amount of effort or more :D

I completely understand her . I love learning languages but I couldn't handle be a teacher and make translation. I prefer to be a seller or a cleaner.
