You also have to take into account the fact that Starcraft has 0 afk time in a match. You don't stop until one of you loses. Sure you can take a break between matches but those are breaks after a gruelling pvp match.
@@RainyDJ Considering the range he gave was until 2010 and he only started his Daily's in 2009-2010 (and a dozen 20-30 min podcasts before that), I doubt that equaled a significant amount of his estimated time.
@@Pas5afist The range he gave for Starcraft was 15 years starting in 1998, that takes us to 2013 which is almost to the tail end of him doing the daily. I think he's definitely including it.

I think Sean is understating how much starcraft he played. I have at least 40k hours in one MMO, and I played WoW and 14 during my breaks. This guy lives and breathes SC
20h a week is just under 3 hours a day, if he cut himself off cold turkey i could easily see someone whos olayed wow since vanilla easily surpassing him. most people who get into mmos would play for 1 - 2 hours a day on the week days then 6+ hours on the weekends, purely due to the mindset of monthly subscription, being a use it or lose it mentality.
@@charlesmwolf I followed him for 3 yrs straight, day in and out, during sc2 era , he did a show practically every day , that I would wake up for in the middle of the night .That show was in Starcraft Client , He would study games or play with Viewers. That show took anywhere from 2-4 hours , not to mention prep for the show , not to mention that he has never been lower than masters while playing random , not to mention prep for casting... and so on 20h , was a joke number he threw out for fun
@@Psibound 25 hours a week means like 3.5 hours per day doing SC. I'm sure he considered his time spent as a caster and content producer too. He devoted his life to the game -- he definitely spent way more than 3.5 hours a day. 7 hours seems like a light day for him. At minimum it was a full time job with a lot of overtime. 40 hours a week is the floor estimate and scale up from there.
My wow /played was always super inflated because I'd regularly stay logged in while running errands, eating, etc. and add in how much I'd go afk then go to bed or go out and however long it takes to auto logout gets added. 30k is 3.42 years of playing 24/7. That's insane. No doubt its easy for wow veterans to surpass that number. But i bet a lot of people overcount how much time was truly in-game with MMOs. Not to discount the impact that /played has on your life however
It's actually a complement. Day9 has transcended SC so much that people don't even know about his SC past/beginnings or just how deep they go. It's like people who don't know about The Rock's wrestling background and don't understand why we call him The Rock. They might even know he used to be a wrestler, but they don't know just how big of a deal he was.

I played 8-10 hours a day and more like 12-18 on weekends when I was deepest in WoW, so that's like 75 hours a week or so. But to be fair a lot of that was chill semi-afk or casual leveling that is nowhere near the intensity of Starcraft.
yeah, its apples to oranges, because sometimes I played WoW just to chat while watching youtube, its a game that can be pretty mild in nature. When I went hard on SC2 I played like 3 hours a day at most, and that is because I would be mentally exhausted after 4-5 matches
thing is... WoW players count times played in days. Craziest thing I heard when I played was a guy that went for the top PvP title, we calculated he played 15 a day on average the first year. I had around 400 days (9600 hours) on 1 character in WoW.

I mean a lot of people who play WoW have insane time played. I clocked in 20,000 hours on a single character, not factoring in alts over the decade. It is a real time sink because you spend all day playing.

I'm at 19k+ hours, soon reaching 20k hours on WoW Classic Era. This version of the game is a bit less than 5 years old. If I had been playing this much across other versions of WoW wich is soon 20 years old, I'd be at around 80k hours by now.
I agree that 20 hours a week is a very conservative estimation for you, my friend. And add to that the time making content about the game, discussing about the game, or even traveling to events.
I spent my entire summers from 3rd grade to about 7th playing starcraft custom games. It was my childhood. I first watched anime with friends i met playing from Feyvern/ticondra RPs. I cant put a number on how many hours starcraft ate up my life, but i dont think ive put similar hours in anything else in my life.
I maxed out every class in BFA. I spent so much time that I was speed leveling characters without guides. Just because I've played it so much I knew where to go. The only reason I stopped was because I got a job traveling across the country and didn't have a stable internet connection.
WoW was both my second and third job for a number of years, minimum 60 hours played per week, often 70-80. It was not healthy, but because WoW is often less intense it's way easier to just sink hour after hour into it.
I played a fair bit of StarCraft as a kid before eventually to upgrading to WC3 and then to wow... Now on just the one account that I currently still play, not the shared one friends and I put together, my alt-tracking addon has me at 1,190 days with 675 on one of them before I switched mains. 1250 days = 30,000 hours... And wow logs you out/doesn't count playtime if you're afk more than 15 minutes on any one character.
Yeah WoW has been around for a very long time and /played only shows that character. I have over a year played on my classic wow main let alone alts or the other 7 expansions I did play before hand. Since 2005 I've made some awesome mates and still part of a great community, I'm still in touch with mates from way back and play other games with many to this day.
Basically all of my 19th year was playing WoW at least 16 hours a day. Put on about 5k hours into the game just that year. I haven’t played since the end of second patch during MOP, but I started Mid Vanilla; so I gotta be up in the 20-30k range at least.

I was doing 16-20 hours a day on my days off from work, and 8-10 on my work days. For WoW. For at least the first 8 years. So a minimum of 32k hours in that first 8 years. And I've played all the expansions.
i started counter-strike since June of 2002, and still playing it now, at least 4 hours a day everyday, with 99.5% margin. that's 22 years x 52 weeks x 7 days a week x 4 hours a day x 0.95 = I played counter strike for 30k hours thus far.
Im 27. I remember sitting on dad’s lap during beta and being upset bc i couldnt choose a hunter bc it was so buggy you couldnt even make one. I think this was around age 5-6? I dont remember. I currently have 14k hours on my account. That is almost 600 DAYS played. I have close to 2 years (720~) of my life spent with this game on. I’ve played every expansion at least a little except dragonflight. And i tend to quit after the first or second raid tier. I thought i broke this crack addiction and then they released classic in 2019 Let me be sober blizzard. Please
I know Day9 played a LOT of SC. Probably more than most nerds has time in WoW. But whats nuts about WoW is that it would turn into peoples' lives. I actually KNEW people back in the day that were pissing in bottles and having their mother bring them everything, cause 10 minutes away from the game was hell. And while WoW has been out for a way shorter timespan than Sc 1&2, you can imagine spending 16-18 hours or even more every single DAY for most of the 20 years the game has been out. I remember my cousin had 500 days back in TBC (2nd expansion, released in 07), on ONE character, and he wasnt even THAT hardcore comparatively.

And I found a lvl 60 UD SPriest sitting afk on his mount in arathi highlands. After watching him not move for quite some time, I figured this was it, and I started flailing at him! Heart pounding, scared he might come back to his keyboard and end me with a single spell. His HP slowly crept down to 0. His corpse hit the ground, and I was rewarded with 300 honor, unlike the kills on players my own level, where you got like 25 or something. Can't remember the Horde names of ranks around Knight/Knight Lieutenant but he was there somewhere. I immediately vanished and stealth walked to the ally base. Scared he would hunt for me 🤣🤣 The respect I had for the game back then was so wildly different 😍
I started WoW in 2007, still playing it casually, I was doing 16 hours a DAY of WoW in my prime.... I have hit 20k hours before I started casual in 2016. 30k in WoW for someone really plying the game is not hard.
In the 9 years of time I played RuneScape I had at least two years of play time, or approximately 17,500 hours, and currently somewhere around 7000 just on one character playing XIV on and off. I think Sean is underestimating how much time people devote to video games.
its probably true many wow players have more hours into wow than day9 has in starcraft in 15 years. wow along with other mmorpgs takes over your life and you will not go to work or school and can play for 10 hours a day easily. going to school or work you can still easily go over 10 hours a day. its easy to get sucked in to that level of playing especially if your irl life sucks. you could have a serious addictive personality or other real issues irl.
I personally have around 35,000 hours in World of Warcraft. You can learn a new language *fluently* in 2000-2500 hours of intense study. I could be fluent in a lot of languages by now... I am not proud.
Raiders back in the day RAIDED (not played, just raided) for 25 hours a week, and that was like an average schedule, for years. No idea who this guy is I'm sure he played a lot of SC but if you were in a top 100 guild you were playing no joke 60-80 hours a week back then, it was gross.

To get to 30k hours over the last 20 years of wow that’s really only 3-4 hours a day. And on the weekends people tend to play more. So really could equate to a little less during the week. Also to put into perspective, during my peak time on D3 there were some weeks I put in over 100 hours. It’s very feasible someone beat him in hours.
Mr. Plott has tourney prep where he would easily play 12-14 hour days for months. He was legit playing A+ vs Koreans. Not to take away from modern games but BW has the most difficult mechanics of any game I have ever played, before you could change hotkeys it was like playing difficult piano pieces. No, I think you underestimate how absolutely lost people get in the mmo hole. And a few never really get out, so a strong commitment to a raid guild of around 2000 hours a year becomes a their life, these numbers can double, depending on how bad the case is tripple. For medium term of 5 to 10 years I would go with double, so 4000 hours a year over a period of 10 years for a game that has existed for nearly 20 years now is - unfortunatley - a thing that happens sometimes. I wish it was just testatment to how great and fun of a game it is, but unless we are talking rare cases of content creator success, the stories are rarely this positive.
20 hours a weak is rookie numbers. I literally played wow until like 5am in the morning, snoozed for a couple hours then did it again until the next morning. I might have played wow for 20 hours in one day

I think it's obvious he's just being generous with the time lol 20 hours a week is less than 3 hours a day. A casual gamer hits those numbers. As a kid, I'd play 6 hours a day, easily... 12 on weekends. I looked these numbers up because they used to document them on a website. And that was an FPS game. For about 5 years straight. So, that might come to about 15k hours over those 5 years.
There's definitely people that have more hours in WoW than he does in Starcraft. There's people out there that have been playing 10+ hours a day since OG WoW came out in 2004. Let that shit sink in

I haven't played Runescape in 10 years. I had multiple characters. To this day, my playtime on my main Character in Runescape adds up to about 4% of my time spent alive.
I think the last time I calculated it, over nearly 20 years I spent somewhere in the region of 50,000 hours playing RuneScape. Considering I'm 30, that's 20% of my life. Granted most of that will have been in my teen - early 20's when I had little else to do, but it seems insane when I look back on it now.

I had like 25k last time I checkd in BfA, but to be fair, most of that time is between vanilla and MoP (my shaman alone has like 650 days played from that time period). After that, I went more chill and play for maybe a month or two at the start of the expansions, no raid tryharding, just some m+ with a bunch of friends, with the notable exception in Legion, where I actually stuck around for few more months for Nighhold and Tomb.

I have an addon in wow that keeps track of all my characters, and the game has a /played command to allow you to see a characters in game time. I haven't logged in to every character I have ever played since installing this addon, and will never log in to old characters that were deleted years ago... The current running total is 741 days, or 17,784 hours, so that's my low end.
