www.teamjaynorman.com - How Many Miles Is Too Much for a Used Car?
If you’re trying to determine “how many miles is too much for a used car,” you’ll find many editorial or subjective opinions online. You should, however, use the best market-based data you can find. I’ve found a “secret” tool that’s free and not really a secret. It’s Carmax’s website and their “Sort By” filter that you can use to find the highest mileage they will allow for each make and model they offer to the public.
“How many miles is too much for a used car” is not one specific number but is a relative number you can use in comparing similar makes and models. For instance, I just did a check on luxury compact SUV’s and found that the highest mileage BMW X-3 that Carmax was offering had 60,000 miles while the highest for an Acura RDX was over 120,000. Carmax is the largest used car dealer, and they obviously view these two comparable vehicles differently.

'You never know how a car has been driven, and if it has been driven badly, it's better to pick it up at a low mileage.'', that's how people choose second hand cars. But a 110 000 mile car from a driver that provides time for the oil to heat up and drives in a decent manner is better than a 40 000 mile car from someone that doesn't take care at all. Former leasing cars are driven the latter way, mostly.
@jaynorman9136
@jaynorman9136 7 лет назад
John, you’re right on target. Each car must be vetted individually. What’s neat about Carmax is they retail (not wholesale) over 5,000,000 cars a year so you can research what mileage level they are willing to put into inventory for each model, and there are often BIG differences. Once you determine which ones look the most reliable, then you can do your individual vetting.
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 7 лет назад
Except that's not at all a reliable indicator. There is actually data out there about the mileage a specific make and model typically attains, as well as average yearly maintenance and repair costs. This is real data instead of the false sense that paying too much at Carmax seems to suggest to you. Remember also that vehicles can be repaired. Paying $6000 more for something that might last one additional year before it needs repaired, is a terrible value when buying a used vehicle, but you don't even have that expectation, just some guess that whatever happens to randomly be the highest mileage vehicle of a particular make a model, might be the highest they would accept. There is nothing that suggests your assumption is true.
@Joke9972
@Joke9972 7 лет назад
Indeed, I agree. Measuring the number of mm's your cylinder head deviate from initial measurements is the best way to see whether an engine is worn out or not.

John Callaghan Yeah, lease vehicles are the ones to watch out for especially luxury sports vehicles. They are driven hard and most drivers think they are on a raceway trying to beat the clock! I would be careful in buying these type of lease vehicles because of the way it has been driven.

Maintenance is a huge factor! I've seen really bad sludge build up in engines were the owners thought it would be a good idea to change the oil in excess of 10,000 miles or more. The truth is I would never take my car past 4,000 miles, but 5,000 can be passable, but it is the very limit. After that the oil is completely filthy and you might even be a bit low.

Synth vs Blend vs Convent.. It all depends. I would do 10k with Full Synth and proper filter. 5k with a blended and 3k with conventional.
@robertsitch1415

It pretty much has to be a new low mileage engine with tight tolerances, mostly non towing highway driving and the latest API service rating/full synthetic oil.

I drive over 35k miles per year on average and on any toyota you can use mobile 1 full synthetic oil with fleece filters that will go for 7500 miles under normal driving condition and do that forever... 5000 mile oil changes are great, but why do it that often when my oil still has great viscosity at 7500 miles....just saying

It seems to depend on a combination of factors if you can even come close to a 6 digit odometer rolling over. One of my friends inherited several Corllias from his father the 97 model had around 800000 kilometers on it when he got rid of it. The next one ended up dieing at a much lower milage.

It's not the milege, but more of the condition of the vehicle. A high milege well maintained vehicle is better than a low milege abused vehicle. Older simpler cars tend to last longer bec they are easier to maintain than most modern complicated cars with low quality disposable parts...

I actually clicked this hoping for an explanation of mileage, "My car has 10,000 miles on it!". I'm not a car guy (I fix computers instead lol) but from a video that gave me a dictionary definition, I believe it means amount of miles driven in the car, total, like literally ever since the car was manufactured. Looks like Carmax will inventory an Impala up to about 100,000 so should be ok. However, they've made it a little harder to check the highest mileage for a model that they will inventory - you have to set the mileage filter for 150,000 then scroll through looking for the highest listing.

Carla Jordon yeah but you don't know who had the car before and how they treated it. With certain cars you can guess what the average owner was like and look around under the hood and body to guess how they drove and maintained it but then consider that some cars with 120k+ have had 4 or 5 owners. People beat and mistreat a car until it starts to crap out then they trade it in or sell it yo a sucker who doesn't realize what they're getting into. Especially when you talk about luxury vehicles, I've seen plenty of cases where the previous owner did nothing for 2 or maybe more years! Not even an oil change, all fluids dirty/low. Brake pads run down tires worn down and haven't been rotated/balanced.
