How Many RGB LED Strip per Power Supply?
Calculating the current draw on LED strips is essential to determine what kind of power supply you will need. All of our power supplies here at SIRS-E have a datasheet with that specification written out.
In this video we will show you a simple way to determine what power supply will work best for your project.
We will be using a 400 watt power supply and a dual density RGB LED Strip. First off, you must divide the 400 watts of the 400W power supply by the 48 watts of the strip. This will give you an answer of around 8.
This means that 8 strips equals to about 400 watts. A power supply should never be run at full capacity due to thermal issues that can arise, and to protect the longevity of the power supply.
The rule of thumb for calculating power supply capacity is to multiply the capacity of a power supply by .75 and that will give you the maximum watts you can draw safely from that power supply. 300 watts is the most you can safely draw from a 400 watt power supply.
You can divide 300 by 48 and you will get roughly 6. 6 dual density strips is the most you can put on a 400w power supply safely. This same rule applies to any other size power supply with any other type of strip.

How do you get 350w from multiplying 48 x 6? and how is that 75% of 400?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 10 лет назад
We are rounding off 48 to 50W. 50x6 IS 300. Which is 75% of 400. *****

Wouldn't 75% be 300 watts instead of 350 watts? This video does explain well other than the stated safe wattage usage.

+Lin Bry Hey Lin. You are definitely right. We actually have notation in the video around 3:23 in which we address this mistake: "Ooops, 300 Watts!" As far as the rest of the video goes, 6 strips stays below 75% consumption while 7 strips would exceed "300" watts. Thanks for commenting.

If i were to connect in series, but at a distance apart ... do you have the supported "length" configuration? For example, my setup is .... RGB strip x 2 (total of 30ft) RGB strip x 3 (total of 45ft). Basically i want to know is, if i put the power supply in the middle, how many strips each direction "in series" can it be supported with no voltage drop. (Also taking into consideration if i need to have a gap in between 2 RGB strips). ---> This setup is for outdoor X-mas lighting and hence not continuous...... Also, is this also valid for Technicolor pixel strings?

+Abhijit Das , Hello and thank you for your comment. Before we could define how many LED strips you can use with a power supply we need to know what kind of strips they are (LED size, density, power consumption, etc.) We would like to assist you with this project, so why don't you give us a call 956-522-2006 or contact us at contact@sirs-e.com

you need to show amps to watts conversion because a lot of the power supplies are rated in amps and that confuses some people

+D Lofton Thanks for the idea. For anyone that has had this question: Volts (X) Amps = Watts, which could also be expressed as Watts / Volts = Amps or Watts / Amps = Volts

Hello +propfella, since we were not allowed to reply to your comment about our video directly, we thought we would post our reply to your comment here. Your Comment: propfella 8 hours ago Back to school for you mate. 75% of 400 watts is 300, not 350. ... 80% isn't pushing a 400 watt PSU, unless it's poorly designed of course. If the strips aren't working at maximum output continuously the use of more LEDs would be OK. As long as the temperature of the PSU doesn't get too hot, I'd be happy to use 7 strips. I've noticed in your videos you seem to tell viewers your LEDs etc are superior to others available. Aren't you simply a reseller of Chinese stock ? Our Reply: Hello +propfella, thank you for watching our video and for your comment. We value everyone's opinion, especially if we gave out wrong information. This helps us improve ourselves and ensures we provide accurate information to our viewers in the future. The intent of our RU-vid channel is to help others learn and to share information about our products. With that said, you were correct about the 75% being 300 watts. Unfortunately we found that error after our video was produced and uploaded. To fix the issue we created an annotation that would display the correct answer. In regards to your comment about "80% isn't pushing a 400 watt PSU...", we would like you and all of our viewers to know that we use the 75% - 80% as a recommendation to ensure the longest lifetime possible for your PSU. We take great pride in designing quality products for our customers to ensure they continue working no matter the situation or elaborate their installations may be. A common fact that you may know, is that the PSU efficiency varies according to the TA (ambience temperature). Using our low cost power supply you will find maximum efficiency and load is at 20 degrees Celsius. We have never stated that our products are "superior to others available", simply that we offer high quality products. All of our product's datasheets contain product origin. You will see that our products are professionally designed here in the U.S by our Engineers, then they are assembled in China per our specifications in order to pass on the savings to our customers. If you have any questions, please feel free to use our "Contact Us" page on our website and we will be sure to have an engineer get back to you. sirs-e.com/contact-us/

Hello Eskil, if 5x12 means 12W every meter, that makes 60W per reel, which means you will need a total of at least 180W so a 200W power supply should suffice, here is a link to our MeanWell 200W power supply, it is a high quality power supply that is well trusted throughout the industry. sirs-e.com/shop/led-lighting/led-strip-lights/led-power-supplies/power-supplies-led-power-supplies/ul-listed-meanwell-led-power-supply-200-watts-12-volts-90-264vac-non-waterproof/

+Tomas Gaeta Hello, the voltage of the power supply would need to match the strips, 12V with 12V, etc. Now what needs to be more is the wattage, for ex. you can have a 12V power supply that can handle up to 400W. Thanks for the info in a very clear manner. As you mentioned the number 1 enemy of power supplies and LED's is Heat and here in AZ we have an abundance of that... LOL. We have been doing tons of installs for custom LED work ( along with Carbon fiber vinyl wrap, not sure why but they go together well) and when it is common to hit 120 degrees in the shade I have the guys use the 1/3 rule. Same thing except instead of 75% usage of max wattage we do 66%. So,in the same example I would do five strips hitting about 61% of the max wattage. I'm thinking we are starting 20% behind most everyone else before we even solder out first connection... Better safe than to see roasted components. My 2 cents if its worth anything. Thanks again for the great video!!

what is sd strip and dd strips? and how long are the stipes that you are talking abouth? one more thing i like to put some led in my living room. the dimension of the room is 8m (26ft) long and 4m (13ft) wide. so in total i will need 24m (78ft) of rgb 50-50 stripes. can i use single power supply in my case?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e

Hello Ivan, sd is single density (30 LED per m) dd is double density (60 LED per m). Whether you can use one power supply or not will depend on the specs of the LED tape you have, if you would like a quote please visit our website www.sirs-e.com

I don't know nothing about these led strips but I guess I can go with the dual-density stripped and how many feet of line of lighting is that for a 400 watt power supply I don't know anything about this I know LED lighting but nothing with this trip so I'm trying to learn so I'm trying to say I need about 600 feet of lighting so what's the best way to go on about that I want light changing I want motion and not want to run at all on one Outlet
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
Richard, for double density after each strip of LED lighting you will need a booster, the strips are 16.4 ft each. If you would like a quote please email us at info@sirs-e.com

generally single density is for 30 LED's per M, double is 60 LED's per M . This is the formula our company follows, as for other companies it would be hard for me to confirm that. This is the general standard for the industry though.

Hello! I have purchase Warm white 5x5M of 3528 SMD 600 LED waterproof strip. I wanted to connect each of them for me to have a 25M long strip. can you please advise how much power supply do i need to use. Thanks!
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+Giancarlo David This is what you will need; In essence, Since it is a double density LED Strip you will need a power supply for each Strip, However, you can simply use a 200W power supply in the middle of two Strips meaning one going left and one going right in order to finalize your circuit. so you need two 200 W power supplies, and for the final strip you can simply run a wire back to the closest one being 16 ft away. Hope this helped.

This doesn't take into account different methods of the installation itself, excluding components such as amplifiers or DMX decoders.

What ampere power supply is required for 1m 5050 RGB 60Led /meter , 5m and 21meter . Correct me if i am wrong, 1A/meter is required for RGB 5050 60LED/meter , so for 5meter it will require 5A*12v=60W power supply ? For 21meter 5050 it will be 252W power Supply ? What about power consumption of the IR controller . On most chinese sites i see power controllers that are rate 6A,12A,24A,36A . So my next question is what ampere rating IR controller should be bought for a 21m RG 5050 60L/m ? What we adding the power consumption of IR controller (6A/12/24/36) to power supply load calculation?

@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+joseph chrzempiec (josephchrzempiec) It all depends on the wattage being consumed and being sent through your power supply. Just find how much your strips use, then make sure you don't exceed the amount your power supply can handle.
@DiyintheGhetto
@DiyintheGhetto 8 лет назад
I measure the current on the strip for each color with my multi Meter and i get 305ma for red, 304 for green and 278ma for blue. it;s a 5m 5050 150 leds so a total of 887ma almost 1a looks like but the information i got is each color is 3a which makes no sense.
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+joseph chrzempiec (josephchrzempiec) Rough estimate of how many watts your consuming based on the information you gave me is that your consuming 10.56 watts, just multiply that number times how many strips your running and that will give you total wattage. Then you just need to make sure your power supply can handle that amount. As for how many simplifiers you'll need, I wouldn't be able to tell because I do not no the nature of your strips.

Nice video. Still have a doubt. Let's say I want to power some RGB 5050 leds strips that add up to 6A (12v). and I have the option of buying a 6A 12v power supply transformer, or a 10A 12v. And, I'm using a controller (the classic white one that all vendors on ebay or aliexpress sell) that in the specs it says "OUTPUT 6A". I assume that if I'm using more than 6A power supply, it will be "useless" since the power will go first to the controller and it will limit the intensity (A) to 6A, right? So buying the 10A will be useless unless I buy amplifiers? Am I correct? Thanks
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+19Jose91 Hello, using a 10A power supply is best because you will not be running the power supply at full capacity. The only way you will burn out the controller is if the strips consume more than 6A.

HI, Thanks for the video, i am based out of philippines and planning to install LED in my 24 hours store. i have just ordered 1 5M 5630 chipset and looking at the W it says 36 W . does it mean its 36WATT/5 METER = 7.2 Watt/Meter ? 36 WATT/METER doesnt sound right to me else it will be more expensive as compare to regular light isnt? Also does 48 W led take some amount of electricity as 48 W of fluorescent tube? if yes then how can anyone save electricity by switching to LED? sorry to trouble you with my questions
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 7 лет назад
Due to the lack of information of the product that you are using, I wouldn't know exactly fro sure. It does sound like it is 36 watts for the whole 5 meter roll. It is because you are consuming the same amount of energy, for more lights. For example, for our retrofit kit the whole consumption is 50W for 4 4 ft strands. As opposed to florescent's consuming 50W per tube.

Hello AlpineEnt, thank you for watching our video and for your question. Double density = 48W ? Does anyone know what they are talking about ? He mentions 5050 and 3528 strips. A 60 led / m, 5050 strip is 14.4 x 5m = 72watts; 30 leds /m = 36watts A 60 led / m 3528 strip is 4.8 x 5m = 24watts; 30 leds /m = 12watts Where is he getting 48 watts from ? The most common, 60 leds / m, 5050 at 72 watts per 5 meters x 6 (as he suggested) would draw 432 Watts ! So much for the 400 watt power supply !?!
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+terryehhh Thank you for watching our video. We have come to the conclusion that the 72W is not accounting for Voltage drop issues. What that means is that after 16.4 ft ( the length of a full roll ) you will have about 11.2V towards the end. @LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
It depends on the power consumption of your strip, as well I am unsure what those yellow black wires are. Generally you'll need the positive flowing through the strip, and negative will be used to control color selection if RGB.
@Mike-in3cq
@Mike-in3cq 8 лет назад
Each 16 foot section draws 50 watts. The amperage I am unsure of right now. The yellow wire is the 12v supply and the black is the ground (obviously).

Hello jpalm32, thank you for watching our video and for commenting. While our prices may differ, there are other differences between the quality of our product and theirs. Our strips have an increased light output, increased efficiency, more lumens per watt and better color balance. This can't be obtained by buying 5 Chinese LED reels. Also many of our customers depend on the quality of our product and our customer service because many of them use our products for themselves and/or their clients, and they need the reassurance that the product will work and knowing that we are here for support if they need it, is an extra incentive for them.

Buy cheap, buy twice. Always be careful of buying electrical stuff from China, as it could burn your house down. Their laws are not governed by EU regulations, which is partly why they are so cheap. Hello guynumber20, thank you for watching our video and for your question. We don't believe there's 1300W power supplies, but if you want to check for yourself, you can divide the 1300W of the power supply by the 48W the dual density strip consumes and also divide the 1300W by 23W the single density strip consumes. But remember this will give you the maximum amount of strips and to be safe you should never run a power supply at full capacity.

So a "400 watt" power supply is actually a 300 watt with a service factor of 1.25? Why isn't it advertised correctly? if it can only safely service at 300 watts with a maximum of 25 % over before it blows, its only a 300 watt. that's how it should be listed. Are all marketing people trained to twist truths to gain sales, or just your company? Nah, I know its not just you, just giving you a hard time, but in reality I don't know that i can trust you now.

Hi! This was an interesting watch, and I feel almost ready to re-revisit my LED wiring mission (which I had to abandon before as I had serious power issues). I am looking to wire eight separate strips of RGB 5050 strip lighting around different areas of my room. I tried this in series but realised I didn't have enough power in the circuit, and loose connections between the strips was a nightmare too so I had to give up. Each LED strip I intend to use will be around 1m long. If I want to wire these in parallel, and each strip has the brightest 60 LEDs per metre, how big a power supply will I need, please? Can I wire 8 x 1metre strips with one power supply safely? Thank you!

+thegrimey Hello, unfortunately since I do not know the nature of the strips you are working with I wouldn't be able to give you an exact answer, but generally you want to look at the wattage consumed by your strips then get a power supply that wont have to run at full capacity to fulfill your needs.
