Narcissistic? That’s a bit hard. Do you even know what it mean? Narcissism = lack of empathy. Sense of entitlement. Self-centered. In dire need of admiration of others. Either you are Mads’ psychologist and know him very, very well or you mean something else than ‘narcissistic’.
He made history already. Co-recordman of stage victory with no less than Eddy Merckx, and probably the best sprinter of all Time. Break a record is always satisfying, but reach an Eddy Merckx record is allready an achievement.
This is such a disappointment, he could postpone his retirement to next year for a last last chance - P. Gilbert on Eurosport seemed to be of this opinion
Thought the journalist interviewing Mads Pedersen immediately after the stage crossed the inappropriate line by asking him about Cav. He is still breathing heavily after a massive win, and instead of basking in his glory (he was in the wind for a long time too) he is asked about another competitor, who isn't even a team mate. Horrible journalism, trying to keep the story about Cav at the wrong moment.
@@SuperYobothose riders are probably also lighter, don’t know your physique tho so i’m just guessing (and nothing wrong with being heavier too, they’re as light as possible)
I was so sad to see him crash, you could see on his face how disappointed he was. my dad and I were really excited to see him break the record (should've happened yesterday), we've been following him for years now...I hope he's doing okay and his injuries aren't too serious 😔💙
The rider that won could have pulled back and let such a big part of the sport take it! Truly sad to see how some so think of themselves and not have a big heart for others! But this is our world today dog eat dog like never before!
@@westpacificmarketanalytics2384You don’t honestly believe the winner should just let someone else win right? Maybe they have dreams to become the stage record holder and are just beginning their journey. Sports would be so boring if people just let others win
And absolutely no one wants to see a record be given to someone that doesn’t deserve it. Not say Cavendish isn’t a great rider but he still has to earn the record
Yes it should have happened yesterday, I think the commissaires would have relegated Philipsen if that wouldn't have meant Cav taking the record. Call me cynical.
Its not a flat sprint. Philipsen was never fabourite for this stage. Bini, WVA and Pederson were the favourites. Two of them made podium and one has won. Still very impressive second place for Philipsen.
@@imranwahid11 People care as much about being fair to Philipsen as he cares about not crossing the line to send someone to hospital for weeks. Philipsen hasn't earned fairness here. He dishes it and might get away with it for the jury part. Fans will hold him accountable though. Ride fair, win some and be admired or do what you have been doing, win more and deal with the smoke you get. While you are correct, it might be more important to reel in a reckless rider before something awful happens
@@Siduch. Mark Cavendish 54 Grand Tour wins, Total wins 162. Peter Sagan 18 Grand Tour wins, Total wins 121. Mark Cavendish has won the jersey in all 3 Grand tours, Sagan hasn't won the jersey in La Vuelta. Mark: 34 wins in Tour - Sagan: 12. Mark: 17 wins in Giro - Sagan: 2. Mark 3 wins in Vuelta - Sagan 4. Mark world cup wins 1 - Sagan world cup wins 3. Yes Sagan was better in the tour at getting points because of his better skills in the mountain but that doesn't count in the art of the sprint. So yes Sagan is better in the stats of the green jersey and is a world class sprinter and rider. But if you judge sololy on the sprint and the part of being a sprinter. Then Sagan has never been close to the level of Mark Cavendish. Sorry but no stats indicates that of all i have just written.
I think it was more calculated than merely 'fun' - he noted that Jonas was uncharacteristically riding near the back of the large finishing group and as it was a long uphill finish there was a real risk of gaps appearing during the final sprint and Pog was hoping for such a break with Jonas behind and if he was near the front then he would gain a few more secs of time.
@andrasszabo1570 I didn't say anything about MVdP. I am only talking about Phillipsen and he sloppy ass sprinting that endangers all the other sprinters.
@@silasrobertshaw8122 You talked about his leadout, how he wasn't in control and how maybe some sprinters could threaten to kneecap him (which is quite fucked up from you, BTW). His leadout is called Mathieu van der Poel.
for me its very impressive how this falls dont happen on a regular basis... like, they go together so closeeee trying not to fall so hard on this situations.. it really amazes me how they dont fall more often.
I know he's not a lot of people's favourite rider, But Dylan Groenewegen finishing 4th on such a lumpy stage amongst strong classics riders in a reduced bunch sprint of just 50 riders shows how well he is going climbing better than ever... he's just forgotten to work on his sprint 😆
That's such an interesting analysis of the crash, I didn't even notice any of that. You can see Majka slowing down because of something in front, so then he's leaning on Pog and then when the camera pans up you can see there's a gap between Philipsen and the guys in front of him, so evidently he also had to stop, and I think it was because the UAE guy next to him (is it Bjerg? or Laengen? I'm not sure) had to slow down because of the guy in front of HIM, who you can see suddenly accelerating as well. And then that led to that whole ripple effect throughout the peloton. Crazy how that works. And very disappointing for Cavendish, hopefully he gets another shot at that record.
The danish commentators said that Mads Pedersen can do 1400 watts for 20 seconds. Very impressive indeed. So strong on an incline like this. I think Jonas can win tomorrow if the win will not come from a break.
@@tadaias8540 Watt is a measure of the rate of energy transfer over a unit of time, with one watt equal to one joule (J) per second. So 1400 watts for 20 seconds equals 28000 joules. So essentially watts are used as a measurement of the power output of a rider.
I think Jumbo should help a strong break to get away. The stage nor the climb are hard enough to drop Pog - and if they aren't careful he will win the sprint and take bonus seconds.
@@markdwelchforcongress4456 Are you speaking about tomorrow? Would you care to double check? Puy de Dome is 13.3 km at 7.7% average. It doesn’t get much harder than that. What sprint are you on about? Tomorrow will be suffering of the highest order.
Sad to see Cavendish leave tdf like that so having the record alone didnt happen. But hey!His name will forever be written in the history books next to Eddy Merckx. That is not bad at all
Poor bloke getting pipped the day before and then getting stranded tied for the record with a crash. Still, he’s a legend who’s had a massive career and made a tonne of money - cycling hasn’t done him any harm.
Hey man, great work. Watching your Podcast regularly. Was curious, did you ever think about not doing the podcast ride after the race? Instead prepare videos to show? Would make following the discussions much easier and more entertaining.
WVA needs to brush up on the new rules- when Laporte (isn't that French for "The Door"? Closed ironically....) got in the way he should just have barged Mads or Mathieu right out of the way like Jasper Disaster would have done..... No, the mark of a true sportsman that he held his position until he could get past....Respect to WVA who still came 3rd....
I don’t think WVA is really that bothered this tour. His goals are to get Jonas to Paris in yellow and maybe grab a stage or two. Jumbo must be compensating him well to play this new role.
@@mathewkirk1748 I hope so, if Vingegaard wins the GC this year it'll be mostly because of having WVA and Kuss as teammates leading him out. It's honestly so impressive how Pogacar's been keeping it close so far considering he's riding without teammates most of the stages
Good analysis of the heli shot. Intermarche rider dumping his bidon like a grenade as soon as he sees smoke ahead looks a bit irresponsible but every man for himself at that moment in the peloton. It has to be very chaotic at the speeds these guys roll. Still gutted for Cav.
Very confusing tbh. Why does Wout have to stop pedaling? Surely he can just cut right or left, slam MDVP or Mads into the barrier and then take the win. Thats how this works right?
Actually the Asgreen ttack might not have been so stupid for Tim's chances in the break, since there is not motercycle in front of the peleton while Asgreen in front of it, therefor no moterpace for the peleton. Just a thought.
Man, I am a huge fans of your channel and I am really thankful for the work you are doing but could I ask you a favour? Of course you are rightly doing the way you feel you should do them but it would be way better if you wouldn't reveal the outcome of the stages in the title of your videos, in their thumbnail or early in the video itself. I guess I won't be the only one using your videos as unique source of info about the daily stages and if you were to keep some kind of suspense I feel your already terrific content would get to another level. Thanks in advance for considering my request.
Patrick has said in the past that the title of the video can be worth an extra 50k viewers if it is not boring. And as he currently doesn't have a sponsor, he survives on viewer numbers. Hence today's title.
What a shame Cav is out! Personally not his biggest fan so I dont care about the record. But what a shame he's injured and not getting a grand farewell in Paris like such a legend of the sport deserves. Hope the surgery goes well followed by a speedy recovery ❤
Perhaps in a way Cav crashing out might be better for him in the very long run - it'll always be a 'could have been', rather than getting smoked by the younger guys/better trains: admitting you're old and slowing is one thing, getting it proven to you is something else. He almost did it yesterday, but the time it took to bring the break back had turned the sprint teams inside out. Not convinced he'd have gotten another chance as good as that one.
@@stevenmeyer9674 I didn't say he couldn't do it, I said maybe it's better to go out with "I could have" rather than complete the tdf without a win and have it confirmed "I couldn't do it".
agree. all the guys he's personally crashed out over the years and received zero sanctions because he's 'Cavendish' dont wish ill on him, but what goes around comes around
@@chrisdawson955 He's an aggressive rider, and been involved in his share of crashes, him, and others. Having said that, he would have been run off the road or into the barriers by Djamolidine Abdoujaparov!
Imagine this, he competed in just over 200 TDF stages. Only about 100 of which were sprinter's stages. He won 34 of them. In a sport where winning one stage leaves you a legend, he won nearly 35 percent of winnable sprint stages. Of it all, I'd love for him to have the 2015 and 2017 tours to do over. Both crashes, 1st and 4th stages. But it's 2018 that really gnaws. In my opinion, he was dealing with the virus. He was in very good position on most sprints, but just wasn't Cav at the finish. Of 2018, do know there were 8 winnable stages in the first 9 days. Kittel, Greipel, nor Cav won a single stage that year. What a ride!
cav just doesnt have luck. i remember in 2013 he fell over in Harrogate and finished on the second day. could have had the record for several years by now. bless him and miss him.
The uphill finish was fairly similar to the one at the world championship in Copenhagen. It is a really good type of sprint you get from that. Typically it means there is more happening throghout the sprint - and the risk of crashes is slightly lower
This broke my heart...I was watching live, honestly extremely sad...I pray he comes back, he would have had it yesterday if not a mis shift due to the speed bump.
Someone gets the Oscar: 1 stage after obvious win stage, 5 km per hour, no one else has a even a scratch, dr right there, sad eyes into the camera, other team members shaking of the head….honestly it’s SO transparent, the TDF must think everyone watching are idiots
Cav crash is such a bummer. With his ability to still reach fitness and competitive power, Mark now needs to consider coming back for one more season to try again at 2024 TdF.
That’s just it though - teams aren’t nostalgic and a spot might be hard to come by, especially if it would be for the sole reason of a single stage win.
Stage 5 When Jonas got on the pedals on Col de Marie Blanque he put a minute into Hindley who was at max effort, then on the flat run into the finish JV took another 30 seconds. Pretty sure Jonas can cover anything Hindley throws at him.
Let's make a petition for Cav to make comeback for one more Tour. Also, Jumbo didn't really do the leadout well, but ultimately WvA was the fastest in the sprint, the worst position, was gaining on all riders there. Maybe, maybe!!! Edit: Cav has done it.
You've gotta wonder why jumbo are putting anything into getting Wout a stage win. Jonas is up against it & needs the entire team behind him. These tactics could bite jumbo in the arse
Gutted for Mark - but - Merckx won 34 tour stages in 6 years, of which he was 5 times the tour champ too. That kind of dominance just doesn’t deserve to be lost for value in the history books.
Given the dirty riding and complete disregard for other riders' safety he displayed throughout most of his career, mostly getting away scot free, that's a bit of an odd call ...
@@cycling_posts6423 I think 25 is being extremely generous. and part of why he won so many was that other riders were afraid of his recklessness - he didn't give a damn if he potentially ended someone's career.
GCN guys did a good job explaining why they didn’t relegate JP yesterday. I agree with them that he was fighting for Cav’s wheel so the deviation was allowed.
WVA was the fastest, but got blocked by Laporte, who should've moved right before sitting down coz the faster train was on his left and should've expected WVA to go left to follow the train.
I keep hearing about Cav's gears slipping but he's lucky he didn't completely crash on the stage 7 sprint when he hit that uneven pavement his gears slipped and wheels came off the ground. Any thoughts on this. Not the way this tour or career should of ended for Cavaendish.
bad luck Cav but no stranger to crashes and I’m not a big fan - no surprise that a Belgian popped his last record chance yesterday - Mads good guy and lots still going on in this tour 👍
There is a time in every mans life when the body says thats it we're done. Happened to me, will happen to you. Just embrace it and smile for the camera. Respect!
Just think that if the race commissars had done what they had no honesty or the guts to do yesterday which was to relegate Jasper Phiiipsen for clearly deviating from his line and obstructing Bini then the stage win would have gone to Cav and although he would not have wanted to win that way it would have been a perfectly just win. Now that 34th win will (almost certainly never happen).
It’s such a shame when you think of it that way. They showed Phillipsen should have been relegated when the relegated MVDP in the 2nd Phillipsen win. Really disappointing.
Maybe Pogačar can break the record? He now has 10 stages in 4 years, but he probably will still 1 or 2 stages this year. So then he will 8 more years to arrive at 35; he'll be 32 then.
I’m not an expert but surely Jumbo’s effort at 5:13 to try and create a split is an absolute long shot and a complete waste of energy? So much hard terrain to come, it seems like they really are worried Pogacar will be stronger as the tour progresses.
British people are hurting hugely today, everyone was in support of him getting a tour win & the all time record. After yesterday & today, it wasn't meant to be for Cav 😢
Still gonna be a great Tour but for me it's lost a little sparkle. Love him or hate him, Cav brought a lot to the sport. Was looking forward to seeing him ad a page to the history books.
To me, I'd kinda think I'd prefer to be the co-holder of a major career TdF record with Eddy Merckx..... I mean, we're taking of having your name regularly mentioned in the same sentence as Eddy friggin' Merckx !!
Why even contest that sprint teddy? I feel like Tadej is trolling jv. UAE sat at the back 2 stages then made sure they didn't have yellow now TJV is towing them around every stage. I guess we'll see:)
My heart stopped watching Cav launch the sprint two days ago as I was screaming at my tv hoping that he would win. Can't believe we won't see him on the Champs Elysees sprinting for that win.
So bad for Mark Cav , he was hurt in that crash and he has to abandone the tdf 2023, target 35 stage wins did not materialize...very disappointing for him. I think he mentioned that this tdf 2023 is his last tdf race.
