It is common practice in Cane Corso community to preach about all the things NOT to do with cane corso puppy - DONT allow jumping, DONT allow stairs, GO easy on them while they grow and so on..
Yes, it’s truth, those dogs grow super fast, while their joints are closing slow. However, the worse thing you can do is to “bubble wrap” your large breed puppy because that will not allow them to get stronger fast enough to be able to support their weight and increase risk for injuries. They DO need to build those muscles, strengthen their ligaments and get stronger.
So what to do then? How to allow all that with all the No No’s?
The surface. What is not talked enough is where to exercise your cane corso puppy and this is what I am explaining in this video.
They DO need to move and a lot, but on natural surfaces- uneven ground helps them to develop balance, allows proper grow of all muscles. Outside on natural grounds there is no limit, include jumping - they have good traction under their feet unlike on human made common materials found inside the houses. Puppies need to play and run. Play is also most important factor in your relationship with your dog, don’t forget that!
Let them out, go out and have some fun! That alone will teach your dog that house is only for rest time and eliminate all the unwanted behaviours like chewing furniture and so on.
Puppy have zoomies? - go outside
Puppy bored - go outside
Swimming and hiking are one of the best exercises you can provide to your cane corso and it is very beneficial for their mental health as well.
Do you think a Cane Corso at its origins as a functional farm dog lived inside the house in AC 24/7? No they did not and this is the main reason we see so many overweight couch potato cane corso that can not tolerate the heat. No, it is not a breed that can not tolerate the heat - it is we are who conditioning them not to tolerate the heat by not spending enough time outside
Happy training!
