The only problem come when you're a Romanian citizen and you don't earn 100 or 200 lei/day of work. The prices in Romania seems low just compared with other currencies. But, as a born and rase Bucharest citizen, I really miss Bucharest sometimes.

As a romanian, I can confirm the city is very affordable, but only if you have an EU Grade salary. People earn between $350 and $1000 per month after taxes and stuff. About 10% earn more than that. So you can see why the prices are cheap. There are very cheap alternatives to what you've got. For example, 100 lei can be equal to 1 week of great and consistent homecooked meals. Also, at the metro station, most likely you walked past a Fornetti. They sell a 250 ml of coffee with optional milk for about 3 lei. The city center restaurants is more expensive than other restaurants. For example, you get a huge meal with french fries, grilled chicken breast and salad for 30 lei from Socului Kebap. The true problem here isn't the cost of food or the cost of bills, but the cost of rent and mortgages. I always recommend freelancers and people that don't rely on living in a particular city to move to Bucharest. For example, I earn $2000. I love a very luxurious life, just because everything is cheap.
@MaxandSidney
@MaxandSidney Год назад
That’s really interesting! We definitely found our accommodations to be affordable. It’s wild to think that we could’ve been even more frugal if we seeked out the deals! We understand more now about the average Romanian wage relative to lei, and it makes sense why the conversion is so extreme. We really enjoyed Bucharest and would love to return!

@@MaxandSidney One thing which is less popular in America but much more popular in Europe generally, is home cooked food. In America, people (especially the younger people) are used to just go out and buy stuff to eat or just order. In Romania, although this trend is becoming more and more popular as well in big cities, people are used to home cook a lot. That makes a great difference in how much you spend on food - and I'm sure it would make a difference in other parts of the world like the US as well. If you buy your groceries and cook yourself you end up spending much less than what you would if you just eat out at a restaurant or if you buy fast food.

Romania in general is quite cool in special for tourism which to be honest I think it's the main key of the country since we have plenty of nice places that allow most of the tourists to enjoy them like countrysides, stories. 22.90$ doesn't seem much in dollars but for the Romanian currency, 100 Lei can do you a nice job for the day, in special if you choose other cities as well that are smaller. Bucharest is such a great place but it's a bit more expensive than the usual city - it and Cluj being the most expensive. You might enjoy the landscape "Bridge of God" is something really cool, Sphinx on Bucegi and the mountains in general are amazing, it make you feel like you are in nature.

@@peterpanini96 And it's actually going the opposite direction. Not to mention, nowadays, you enter a shop and 100 Lei fly out of your pocket faster than you breathe. Prices for general items are Switzerland-level, if not more. Services may be cheaper, but those aren't as cheap as they used to be either. And like, you need to eat a sandwich everyday, while you go out every once in a while, if you afford that. Gone are the days you could eat lunch for 20 Lei or less. The differences between the working class and privileged state employees which earn piles of cash, holiday tickets and do mostly nothing all day long is enormous.

Either Cincinati is really expensive or Bucharest is dirt cheap. Here in London I can spend about 15 pounds which is about 20 dollars and buy quite a few stuff too. I guess it depends how you spend it, coffee is abou 5 pounds but that leaves me with about 15 pounds to travel from one side of the city to the other and also buy all sorts of street foods as well. It really depends what you spend money on. Street food is generally cheap pretty much anywhere. I doubt that 100 lei would have lasted more than lunch if you went to a restaurant in the city center.

Would eating in a restaurant in center of London cost much more ?? , i guess is all due to accesibility, an restaurant in middle of the city will always cost more and be more valuable as space and position. There's also what you eat, and having a better cooking chief costs, so there is the more you want high standard food the price of what you commend would be higher.

hello, well-made vid exploring bucharest city, the vibe is there, legit. I was born in bucharest and I've spent my childhood in the areas shown on the video, the city has so many secrets as much of it was built on command by the former pre-'90s leader, like the metro train for example. the city is a mix of brutal linearity layout and the pre-communist old organic layout. considering prices, let's not oversee the fact that you've spent 100 taxed ron, because here we have that centralized 'free' healthcare universal, where we pay half on so yeah, the context it's really important. you've spent like 40 ron at a restaurant that can be easily checked on their website, the price for your only plate easily exceeds 100 ron without the drink and tip, but you did a nice little inclusion for them in your video so maths check out; but we don't do bargain like turks, we don't get daily discounts at restaurants, and neither any of the people who will decide to visit and don't own a youtube channel, 100 ron is a large dominos with a pie and soda. I've visited other eu cities, and capitals, prices are painfully equivalent, gas has same price as in any other expensive eu state, more than enough I even had it for cheaper in other places as such as even romanians have their holidays in other countries where it's more affordable. that being said, it's a enjoyable city, with very low crime rate but we expect some import of criminality after other countries become less desirable, at least law enforcement is fairly competent. at this moment if in sweden one person gets shot every day, in romania a few civilians get shot a year. the criminality is not oriented on person but on money, fraud, scam, theft etc. crimes take place in poor rural areas, in families etc, so there's no chance you get stabbed while wandering the city, there are no real dangerous neighbourhoods, anyone can walk at any time anywhere, english language available most of the time even tho romanian is a phonetical language from latin family similar to italian, spanish, portuguese and fReNch. if anyone plans to visit, financially you need far more unless you wanna live the homeless experience.
@MaxandSidney

@@MaxandSidney hello, since it's a travelling vlog, ppl would maybe research your work in order to visit bucharest, thing is they need alot more and only a fraction of the cost is described. if people want to challenge themselves in conjunction with a visit to bucharest, 5 usd is enough for water and corvrigi, but that's a low quality experience. since -affordable- was somehow the order here, I must say, prices are the same as in france, italy and germany. to be fair, prices are an exclusive criteria for most people on anything, including vacantions.

Very good, I'm so interested in Romania that your video naturally bubbled up in the RU-vid recommendations. Myself, I don't like the touristy area in the old town and spend time in other parts of Bucharest when I'm there. In any case, your video made me want to be back there. The thing you called Crepe is actually called Clatita, hence the name of the shop you got it from. Now... you mentioned the lack of metro systems in Louisville or Cincinnati. I had to grin at your pronunciation of Louisville, since it shows you're not from that city... ;-) In any case, most of the USA doesn't understand the value of mass transit, nor the value of tight compact urban areas, so of course neither of those two cities have a metro system. But, Chicago/NYC/etc do have good metro systems.

Actually, replying to my fellow Romanian here, the subway tickets costed 2.5/entry. So 2 entries costed 5 lei. They increased the price per entry to 3 lei last year, at the end of august - by then, the 2.5 lei tax remained like that for, idk, maybe over 10 years. On the other hand, before september 2021, the on the ground public transportation tax was indeed 1.3 lei/ride. But once you got off that ride and if you decided to switch the tram/bus, you had to pay again. Now, it's also 3 lei/ride, but the ticket is available for 90 minutes, no matter what you take or change. This, without mentioning the monthly subscriptions to transportation you can buy and you come off cheaper. It all depends on how often you use them. But glad you liked our city, Max! 😊

The problem is the minimum wage in romania is 1800 lei. The rent alone is between 1000-2000 lei. 1500 if you want something decent + utilities around 200 lei and basics stuff such as TV and Internet for another 100 lei. Also, nowadays, everything is way more expensive. Food, drinks, ciggs, clothes, uber. For example the average romanian spends today at least 50-60 lei on food, 6-12 lei for public transportation.
