With nearly everyone on earth today creating and consuming digital data on a daily basis, have you ever wondered how much data actually exists in the world? In this video that’s the question were going to answer.

First we need to define what we mean by data. In this case we’re referring to digital data only so anything stored electronically on a device, think websites that are hosted on servers, your photo backups in data centres and the documents you have saved on your personal computer just to name a few things. If we add the file size of every single piece of data that exists on every single device on the world what is the total number?
Obviously, we can’t know this down to the exact number for certain but its estimated to be around 200 Zettabtyes. A zettabyte is something the vast majority of us have never heard of, so what is it?
most of us are fimilar with megabytes, gigabytes and terrabytes and know there are 1024 mbs in a gb and 1024 gbs in a tb. From there we have 1024 tb in a petabyte. 1024 petabytes in an exabyte and 1024 exabytes in a zettabyte and we have 200 zettabytes in total on all devices combined across the world. Lets put this further into prospective so we can understand just what an insane amount of data 200 zettabytes is. With this amount of storage space you could store 40 trillion high-definition movies, 225 zillion 5 page word documents or 53 high resolution photos of each human on earth!
With people and businesses continuing to create data at an ever growing rate it is estimated that over 500 zettabtyes of data will exist by the year 2030!
