How Much do Groceries Cost in Hawai'i?

Aloha everyone!
I recorded this video 10/25/2016.
I thought I would put together a video of prices of groceries and things you would find at the grocery store here in Hawai'i. I've had a lot of people ask me for more information about the cost of living in Hawai'i, prices in Hawai'i, and what it's like living in Hawai'ii.
My friend Pat and I headed over to the Walmart over by Ala Moana shopping mall to get some prices for you of common everyday items. I chose Walmart because most places on the mainland have Walmarts nearby (they're pretty much everywhere). The products should be pretty similar so you can easily compare the prices. Walmart and Sam's Club (or Costco) are probably cheapest in terms of everyday prices but there are good deals to be found at the local grocery stores as well, you just have to watch the weekly ads.
Another great idea is to get a local membership to the grocery stores like Foodland, Safeway, and Times Supermarket (the main ones) to save money. I would say Times is the most expensive of them.
I hope this was helpful to give you and idea of the price of food and household items whether you're visiting Oahu or planning living in Hawaii. Moving from mainland to Hawaii can be a big decision so hopefully this helps make that decision easier.
Thanks guys, like, comment, and subscribe if you liked this video! :)

Oh wow! Those prices aren't bad at all. I am a single female and live in Kansas, so I was expecting crazy high prices because people were telling me how expensive food is compared to the mainland. I guess it would cost a lot more if you ate out a lot, had kids, went out all the time, or drank regularly. I have found a very reasonable place to stay and along with my savings I have I am looking forward to spending a year in Oahu.

There are no Walmart Super Centers here, so there is no way you'd be able to do complete grocery shopping at a WalMart here as they only carry select items. There is no produce section, meat section, bakery, etc. Yes, they do sell fruit, but not in large quantity & it's not really fresh, they do sell lunch meat, bacon, frozen meat and what not, but they don't have a full on meat department. There are dessert items, but there is no bakery. They've blocked super centers from coming here, but in recent years, Walmart has found a way to get as much grocery items in as they can. They've expanded what they offer quite a bit since they first started. You can save money shopping there for what you can get, but you still end up having to go to a regular grocery store or farmer's market to get the rest of the items you need. Mostly what you'll find at a Walmart here are your baking items, dry goods, spices bread, butter, milk, eggs, etc. I usually get what I can at WalMart b/c it's cheaper and comparable to mainland prices, but then I get the other items I need based on the weekly ads. I look for items to be on sale and that's how I determine which grocery store I go to for the items I can't get at Wal-Mart. I also buy certain items from Costco when I can. For people who are single or have a small family, it's not uncommon to split items with people...comes out cheaper.

I’m on the prices look like they’re similar to that here in New York not that much higher I enjoyed your video thank you for putting it out there in it’s something to think about but I don’t really find that their prices are really high if I did move there I would definitely join Cosco‘s like I have a cost for the nausea here in York I was going to ask if my Cosco membership would be good in Hawaii since I’ve already paid for it here in New York Anna maybe join the BJ’s as well which I have in the Sam’s Club so thanks for the video

I live in Seattle currently and I find it funny that our stores here cost about the same some items even cost more here! Even our gas prices are close! (Hawaii is more by a few cents) rent and buying is very comparable to Oahu as well. I definitely think I'd rather live near the beach than in this concrete cold rainy prison. i noticed in this video, that the DiGiorno pizzas are cheaper where you are, compared to here. it's nearly 8 dollars just for one pizza, i usually have to wait until they go on sale. i'm still considering moving there, but, i've delayed that for a while. my wife is still hospitalized, and we are looking at moving her back to Pennsylvania, to be closer to family. she had a severe stroke, that did some serious damage. she is slowly recovering, but it's still a long road ahead. we haven't ruled out moving there, just put it on the back burner for now. maybe in another few years, we may look at it again

Super helpful :) I want to move to Hawaii for college soooo badly... But my adoptive parents tell me that it is "unrealistic" and "not somewhere that you would want to live." ((But Maui definately is somewhere that I want to live)). I live in Indiana, and I'm a sophomore in High School. I know Hawaii is quite some distance but I don't think that the miles or the price tag should pull me away from what I want to do in life. I'm not sure if my dreams ARE too unrealistic, or too pricey, but I've been researching so much, and I think I can make it possible. My biological mother, grandmother, and siblings all support what I want to do, and my grandma told me that she would do anything to make my dreams of Hawaii happen. My bio family definetely isn't rich, but they also are not poor. My brother goes to a 50k school for around 20k with aid and scholorships, and my grandma and mom have been saving their while lives for my siblings and me to go to college. I can live minimally; I don't need flashy cars, fine dining, or ritsy clothing to make me happy. Also, I don't expect my guardians to pay for my college, anyhow. I just constantly stress out about this decision because of not having the emotional/mental support of my legal guardians, which hurts my heart and makes me feel like I cannot pursue my dreams. Do you think Hawaii is too much of an unrealistic goal? Thank you for reading my lengthy rant......it's just, everyone either says that Hawaii is too expensive or that I should just go to an in state college. And I don't know what to do. I've never felt like I've belonged in the state I live in now, but everything about Hawaii draws me in. My bio mom even wants to take me there next summer so that I can see the colleges! So excited! Thanks!

Haole4Life Adventures I'm currently living in Pensacola Florida. I've also lived in California. For what these stores go threw to get groceries to these stores, the prices arn't as bad as i thought they would be. Back in the 80's they only had Safeway. The prices were outragious. It was much cheaper to eat out then cook anything, which we planned on doing as we rented a condo. We did however buy coffee. Coffee was the most over priced item in the store. If i were you, i would go to more farmers markets and try to find local farmed meats. Probably save you some money. They don't have shipping costs. Not only that but its much healthier for you. Just get your junk food and coffee at the stores.
@PURELifeMedia
@PURELifeMedia 7 лет назад
Jeena Bittenbender They have some good deals on produce I think. I haven't seen too much for meat at the farmer markets but then I haven't really been looking hard either. I know in the grocery stores though that local good tends to be more expensive. Eggs are almost double the generic brand for example. :/

Haole4Life Adventures You sure do have the weather for year round gardening which is a plus. I have found that even here, its cheaper to hit a farmers market then going to the store. Especially a large one where everyone is competing for business. I even have trusted meat sources. I try staying out of Walmart because really, where is their food coming from? What country? *******READ BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO UP AND MOVE TO BIG ISLAND******** Been here a couple of years. We recently bought a lovely home overlooking Hilo Bay and Hilo. We are up 100 feet from the water and it is AMAZING! 8yr old house and the area is so gorgeous! We are fortunate and lucky to live here, but we have earned it and we fit in. You may not fit in so SERIOUSLY consider your move. No joke. Serious. But......unless you're a star or got a PhD or lotsa money, honey.....Please SERIOUSLY consider the move here. Do not compromise and think you can support a family on a retail job. Jobs are SCARCE and if you do not have one......gooooood luck. Unless you have something waiting for you here.....PLEASE.....KNOW THAT YOU MAY HATE IT WITHIN 3 MONTHS. Many come and go - with their families in-tow. I am not a nay-sayer.....I am the guy who hopefully makes you THINK HARD. Just because it works for us and we can afford to live here comfortably does not mean all can. Many come here with lots of money, but they do not assimilate. You will not be well-known here. You will become known-well. Huge difference and the mainland ways are NOT seen as good or PONO (righteous).

Since none of the Walmart’s here are full service grocery stores, you won’t be able to get all of your groceries there.

This is on Oahu, just outside Waikiki. It's possible the local markets are more expensive than Walmart, I wouldn't expect 3x though unless you're looking at organic or all natural food maybe?
