How much does it cost to get a PhD? The short answer is: usually, zero dollars! However, it's more complicated than that. This video is about sources of PhD funding: where it comes from, what you have to do to be funded, and what kinds of financial questions to ask when you're deciding whether to accept a offer of PhD admission. Teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and PhD fellowships, both internal and external! Plus questions you should ask about PhD stipends, summer funding, travel expenses, student fees, cost of living, etc.
Remember: money is only ONE factor to take into account when you're deciding where to get your PhD! Stay tuned for more videos on how to decide where to go and how to pick a PhD advisor!

The best advice my undergrad advisor ever gave me about applying to grad school: If they don't pay for you, they don't want you. DO NOT pay for a masters or Ph.D., particularly in a social science field.

This is another gigantic option she didn't cover... But Ph.D students can also get a graduate assistantship job from their university in a university department (all University departments have grad assistants in them) , which would cover the same costs of tuition, pays a stipend and even for housing /food. Even if you're not a Ph. D, other doctorate earners and Masters students can get them. Trust me, I've gotten them for my masters at a big American Midwest, AAU-affiliated university.
@CaseyFieslerPhD

This is what research assistantships are. It makes sense that there would be assistantships that are something other than research, but I've never seen them in any departments I'm familiar with!

How do we know the stats on which group has a better research grant break-up for my area while applying? Most professors in the US do not specify their grant availability on the webpage(probably to have a wider applicant pool). A UG batchmate had to drop his Ph.D. within 2 years as his grant was frozen/redirected towards COVID-related projects and had to exit with a second MS degree.
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 года назад
The better question is what the funding guarantee is for each program, because you can get a concrete answer to that. Even if an individual faculty member is unlucky in grant getting while you're a student, you would still be funded by some other mechanism.
@mapqueen13
@mapqueen13 2 года назад
If you get accepted to a program, at what point do you know what kind of funding you've received? Is it typical for the acceptance to include whether you've also been funded? Or if you got an assistantship? Does it vary by institution? Just wondering since funding would be a big factor in deciding, so I'm hoping it would be clear right off the bat? Thanks! Your channel has been like my Yoda in this whole process, I'm not even kidding!

Dr. Fiesler, thanks again for your video about funding for phD. I am a big fan of your channel for a long time, I follow all your tips and get admitted to Kansas University for PhD. I got an email first from the school that my application was recommended(without an interview), and they asked me to contact advisors I would like to work with. Then after 1-week official admission decision with admission (nothing about funding). then 2 days, I got an email to fill I-20 for immigration. I don't know what the next step is, as no professor replied for now. Hi! Before I start with my question, thank you so much for your advices. As a PhD applicant, this really helped me a lot. However, I do have a question regarding what happens after getting an offer. The thing is, I've been seeing in media recently about asians getting attacked by locals or subliminal hatre against asians after the covid19 (btw I am not trying to generalising here). As a korean, it does somewhat concerns me a bit even though I always wanted to study in US. I am just worried that I might have to stay inside my room 24/7 in the worst case, since I am the one who has to protect myself. Since you are a professor and past-PhD student, would you say there's still hope at least in the PhD community, and insist to just focus on my research and enjoy the campus when i arrive there?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 года назад
I of course can't say that there isn't racism here, and I can't speak to the actual experiences of my Asian students and friends, but I am not aware of threats to their physical safety. Universities also are often safer and more social justice oriented environments than a lot of places. I really recommend that when you're deciding where to attend, you talk to current students in the program about their experiences! Don't be afraid to ask this question.
