In the PhD admissions process, determining who your PhD advisor might be is often very important. But what are some important considerations, and what makes a good PhD supervisor and how do you avoid a bad PhD supervisor? The real answer is that this will be really different for everyone, depending on your goals and situation. But hopefully this video will give you some things to think about, from research fit to advising style to work-life balance. As well as questions you should ask a prospective advisor and their students!
If you haven't seen them and you're at this point in the process, you may want to watch these:
+ PhD interview questions and what advisors are looking for: • PhD Interview Question...
+ What PhD admissions visits/interviews are like: • PhD Admissions Visit |...
+ PhD funding models (funding, stipends, fellowships, etc.): • How much does a PhD co...
+ Reasons PhD students are rejected (and not all of these are your fault!): • Reasons PhD applicants...
Feel free to ask questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer! But as always, also make sure you're getting advice from people in your discipline!

Hi Casey! first of all thanks so much for doing what you do. This is the most comprehensive, detailed and nuanced advice on Phd applications I have seen on the internet. You mentioned @ 2:44 to not walk in with a dissertation topic in mind perhaps because you are likely to be assigned some other topic by the supervisor? Is this mostly the case? just curious, how likely is one to work on their topic of liking? If not, philosophically speaking what’s the point of Phd if not because you want to do deep research in the topic you are interested in? Thanks so much for your time.
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 2 года назад
When I say dissertation topic I don't mean research area! Advisors don't typically assign dissertation topics. But it's very likely that YOU will change your mind. I very very rarely see PhD students do a dissertation about whatever they wrote about in their statement of purpose.

Hi Casey, thank you for the video. I am currently an incoming PhD student in a Biology program and there is a chalk talk scheduled with the faculty during our first week. I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on how to initiate conversation with faculty members? I usually get super nervous. Thanks :)
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 11 месяцев назад
I have no idea what a chalk talk is! But you seriously can talk to faculty like normal people. :) If you're new you can always ask what they like about the area!

Hi Casey! Thanks for the video :) I was wondering if I could get your opinion for something I’ve been deliberating on. Do you think it’s worth it to do an extra semester of undergrad to get a minor in Statistics? I know statistical knowledge can really help in grad school (I’m in Psychology) but it’s looking like I’ll have to do an extra semester to fulfill all of the requirements for the minor. Do you think that could be worth it in the sense that it would make me a stronger applicant and help me stand out? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! :)
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 года назад
Hmm! Honestly, I'm not sure. I don't pay attention to degrees myself, but instead think more about experience. For me, it would mean more that you write in your SOP about taking classes in statistics, and especially if you've been able to apply it to research. BUT this is one of those things I could potentially see others caring about more than me. Maybe ask some psych faculty and see what they say!

@@CaseyFieslerPhD Right, I’m sure it could really depend on the potential advisor! I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks again :):)

I am having dilemma, thus far my topical research is consider a new areas, not many professor is involved in the same areas. The closer i can identify is some peripheral areas that there had research, perhaps i follow on their main discipline and research expertise.

Yes, you should consider what your research topic is an example of, and go broader.

This video is very informative. But i have query, Does is it necessary to find and approach a professor for PhD before filling and submitting applications forms in USA Institute & university?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 года назад
Necessary, no, but whether it's helpful or not depends on the field. My most recent video is about exactly this!

just a general predicament/question : a professor i have a good relationship wrote me two letters of rec in december and submitted them. earlier this month i had an application due for my third school and she missed the deadline and never sent the letter (tried to contact her numerous times, said she would. never did) i contacted the admissions office of this school and they said the committee has already started reviewing applications and will review my application as is. i believe i have a strong app, but only have 2/3 letters of rec. should i just assume i have no chance at this school?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 3 года назад
I don't think you should assume that! It's unfortunate, but I think admissions committees realize that sometimes recommenders flake and it's not the fault of the applicant.

Hi casey, I need a suggestion from you for selecting my phd supervisor. Actually, she is newly appointed and I saw her CV which was very impressive. And the institute she currently appointed is well known and highly reputed institute... also her research domain and my research interest coincides each other... My previous supervisor for master thesis also the same newly appointed... I actually didn't face much problem with his relationship. However, the other staff in the department targeted him and they were more diplomatic towards him. This is affected my project. anyhow I completed the project. But they made me to wander which was the very worst situation I handled. But my supervisor, He always there with me and very supportive... I would say he is more than mentor to me.... with all this concern, I still co-authored in 2 research paper, 2 review article and 1 book chapter & currently working on publishing my thesis work... So my concern is what if I end up like this on my PhD?? But I really like her research goals... So please, suggest me a good decision 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Great video, immediately subscribed! How important is academic institution prestige? I think the main temptation when choosing a PhD program is to go to fanciest place that accepts you. I’ve heard this a mistake, but I’ve also heard from postdocs that having a fancy pedigree is given a lot of weight when trying to ascend the academic ranks. Do you have any thoughts or advice regarding the university prestige?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 11 месяцев назад
My video on choosing which program to go to goes into this a lot more! Also probably the video on choosing where to apply. They're all on the applying to phd programs playlist. But TL;DR I think it's better to go to a school where you will excel than a school with prestige where you would be miserable.
