Welcome to the twenty second instalment of Road To Summernats Top 60 by Astill Design. Please subscribe to our channel if you haven't already.
IN THIS EPISODE: Howard starts to work on the body and shows us how he fixes a little issue with one of the doors. Door handles are a big one in this episode, too. Both Darren and Howard take a look at both internal and external handles in terms of how they will function and look.
Also, we hear from Howard about the true hours and costs of building an elite show car such as BOSS XC. And as per usual Howard takes us around the car to see the latest progress.
And in Astill Design EXTRA: The FPV Super Pursuit gets even more TLC with the installation of a new seat. And more!
Enjoy! And don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any episodes.
Huge thanks to our supporters Mothers and PPG.

Nice work Howard. Another super video. I think being open with the cost is fantastic, as I believe many people don't understand what it takes to build a car at that next level standard. Great work and can't wait to see some paint on the beast.

I had to write this down to fully comprehend it. "Any decent built will start at about 2,000 hours hours in labour with removing skins and that sort of stuff and then add to that $50,000 - $200,000 in parts. Cobra 400 was about 2,500h, gold 4 door about 2.500h, Pioneer coupe was 4,500h, Tail Spin with their involvement 15,000h and XBOSS at 30,000h" XBOSS would be 14.5 years for 1 person, working 40h a week, 52 weeks a year, Tail Spin just over 7 years, Pioneer Coupe just over 2 years (watch that video!) Cobra 400 just over a year! Awesome video as always

@@AstillDesign im buying an ultralight instead. Lol. Coupes are far too expensive and time consuming for me now. I do occasional work for custom car shops and private customers. Once you do a job well enough to make the customer smile, and don't charge a million, you have a customer for life. I have many who still call me after 15 years out of my shop. I enjoy putting effort into making what I do as perfect as the budget allows, and seeing people look at my work and say "old school tradesman..." That to me is a huge recognition. It hurt to close my business after it took years to get to that point of trust. I'll be travelling next year. I'd love to drop in and say hi if that's OK. Looking forward to seeing more of your work mate. Stay safe n have a great one.

G'day Howard, another question from me... what's the difference between using the air compressor to cool a weld and a wet rag? Cheers, Dylan
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 2 года назад
Air is not as aggressive as water. The water can potentially quench the metal and change it molecular structure making it shrink and/or harden. Cheers H
@Dylby94
@Dylby94 2 года назад
@@AstillDesign thanks for the quick reply! That makes sense, going back to one of the previous videos where you were heating up the bonnet skin with the oxy, did you use a wet rag there to achieve that quenching affect? Cheers, Dylan

Hi Howard hope you guys are well. If the cost is so high to build is there any prize money to be won, as I would think cars like XBOSS would be at the upper end of 2or 3 million yet was sold for $860,000 I believe. How do the guys recoupe the cost is it sponsors? Anyway keep up the great channel very informative I've used several of your techniques thanks. Cheers
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign Год назад
Hi, it’s all about people living their dream of owning these cars. The prize money helps with travel costs that’s about all. There is definitely no return on a show car. Restored collectable cars can sometimes recover the cost of sold. Sponsorship is mostly product.

Well done mate. Brutal honesty not often seen in the car industry at the 10 minute mark. I always wondered why they deleted the build cost in street machine magazine. They used to have it. The cars I build are usually 1000hrs and $200k but they aren't elite show level that's for sure.

@michaelcullen8278
@michaelcullen8278 2 года назад
This might be a stupid question but was there a reason for not going cable actuator
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 2 года назад
The effort required at the lock end to make an outer cable retaining bracket and the need to weld the lock arms and therefore not a stock replaceable part in the event of a need to replace at a latter time.
@michaelcullen8278

This is OCD about perfection on panel and paint work for au cars, especially the older fords and holdens. :) 250K to 3 million dollars, how long is a string, lol:) labour does not cost that much at all, its the tech and knowledge base your paying for 100% anyone can paint and do panel work but its perfection to the ten degree which counts?
