Between eBay fees, grading fees, and haggling with people at live card shows, making a profit on sports cards is not a realistic expectation

Excellent analysis!! Thanks! PSA has figured out the most common value card and niched out pricing out of their offered teirs, and doesn’t help when their grading is so subjective and varies nowadays, especially when resubmitted… Uggghhh

Thoughts on TAG? You have to love their graders notes.

Great breakdown on how psa service price percentage extraction should be lower on higher service levels

Love the analysis and how you explained the value extraction. My reaction is that their business is already slowing - bulk pricing at $10 coming soon.
@PIP-zf9yb
@PIP-zf9yb 4 месяца назад
Very little chance of that. No need for them to do that when sgc and bgs and others are charging similar prices as psa with 60 to 70 percent of the value. Based on the market psa is under charging

Completely disagree with all of the points but appreciate the reply.@@PIP-zf9yb WIll check back in in August.

They are getting 1.2M per month. People keep sending

Great video, never thought about it this way. You mentioned you think the “extraction” fee needs to be lower at the higher levels. I think they are and you briefly eluded to it. I think they are because it’s difficult to get to that $500 value on low end cards. I’d guess a low percentage are getting to that $500 value.

Yup agree, completely. I actually “should” have calculated the extraction value at the lowest tier threshold as that’s where the bulk of cards are. And when i say extraction value, that implies a negative connotation to PSA which I don’t necessarily mean to do. Ultimately submitters dictate pricing PSA puts out based on what submitters in aggregate send in at various pricing thresholds. So PSA WOULD keep $15 their main lower tier price if $19 volume trailed off. But it’s showing still sustained persistent demand. That, just like wax prices has to see a demand fall off from submissions to breaks in order for prices for wax or grading to fall

@@TylerShort I think it’s a joke that there is persistent demand for PSA, but I also don’t deal a lot with ultra modern. Mis-graded cards (proven constantly by resubmitting), inconsistency with the “min size”, mislabeled cards, streaking/issues with brand new slabs, upcharges, etc. I’m sure I’m missing things. Only good thing I’ve seen is faster turnaround times to get your mis-graded cards back. Demand has to be just people trying to make money. No way the average collector should be putting up with all these issues.

Yah I'm glad to see them lowering costs & faster turn around times, but I am with you the price reductions are not that significant. I would like to see that Value Plus Service level Declared Value Fee beefed up to $1,000. The Value levels are out of Wack in their Grading Platform at PSA right now especially with card prices taking such a Wack also. How much more careful time do they really take at the higher service levels? All I know as a customer is about the Cost and the Time. How about disclosing something about Servicing as well, like 3 very experienced graders look at the card as well at those higher prices. Still much to work on with all that goes on with the Hobby.

I'm with yah, that value service level does need to be tweaked. I responded to somebody below that I thought dropping price to $29.99 might be more enticing but I didn't think about the opposite, flipping the DV up to $1,000. That would be even sweeter as the regular price at $75 for DV up to $1499 is just not appetizing at all. You have a $600 card raw that gets 9d, it may be worth $600 if your lucky and you now fork over a massive $75 fee to get that 9 encapsulated. You're underwater > $100 by the time you offload it. That needs fixed ASAP

@TylerShort do you think we see them go down to 15 for lowest level? I say no because of what far inferior company's are currently charging. I see no reason why they wpuld be lowering prices. I hope I'm wrong as it's getting tougher and tougher to make profits with these prices. The days of 12 dollar bulks with psa may be over. I'd be happy with 15 hopefully they do another special.

I just shipped an order the day before at the $40 level. Just my luck. Their turnaround times are still ridiculous.
@TylerShort
@TylerShort 4 месяца назад
I still haven't used the $40 level. If they would knock it down to $29.99, I'd probably be tempted to use it more consistently for those time sensitive lower tier cards

What happens if you send a card in to be graded and it is over the $500 max declared value ???
@TylerShort
@TylerShort 4 месяца назад
They will likely upcharge you! You can be close to the thresholds but if you go over and it's egregious, PSA will charge you the next highest service level :(

Doesn’t change a thing for me . Neither does holding cards for the next 15 dollar special . Normally for modern cards holding them to wait for the next special isn’t worth the risk of the market dropping .
@TylerShort
@TylerShort 4 месяца назад
Kinda the same here. It's more of a "wait until the next $15 special to spur buying"

Always baffled me when I see low value and low grade cards sent to PSA for grading. Kinda Like a guy modifying a Toyota Corolla and expecting to get a high return.

PSA is still living in 2021 they will figure it out them submission numbers are about to go down
@PIP-zf9yb
@PIP-zf9yb 4 месяца назад
Except they won't because all of there competitors who are nowhere near close to them are charging way to much. Psa should be charging more then what they are based on sgc bgs and others pricing.

These trading companies have always been too high ! Most good long term card collectors can come fairly close at grading their cards . Just another added expense !!

I made multiple 19 dollar value orders last year. It was 499 max declared. PSA went down 1 penny on the submission of value bulk and went up 1 dollar on max declared value. Stingy mfers. Should have kept the 15 special at 250 max declared value.

Yup your right on the DV. I forgot to check my orders and confused it with the bulk specials the past month.
