I have been a live aboard for 21 years. I have a 44 foot Searay. I’m at a full service marina with RV Park. My slip is covered and I pay $525.00 a month which includes water. Electricity in separate which is about $30.00 a month. My insurance is $80.00 a month. We have pool , exercise room , restaurant , laundry mat. Live entertainment every weekend. Security patrol and gates.

Thank you for how detailed you were with every cost, it was around how much I had estimated (I thought it might come to around 20k annually) and honestly not a bad cost at all, taking into account how those prices changes based on boats and some things we wouldn't do or add that was unique to your situation like upgrades.Also really like that you advertise your local business.

I think that's a very reasonable amount of money to live that wonderful lifestyle on such a great boat. If it's more than some can afford, just remember, you can reduce the monthly expenses substantially by living on a slightly smaller boat and doing more of the work/preventive maintenance yourself. She also figured in the expenses of the Boston Whaler, which many/most people probably wouldn't have. Thanks for the very detailed video.

I love the video and I am currently looking for a Boat to live aboard 5-6 months a year in San Diego. I have seen a lot of "No Liveaboards" when looking at Marina's and boats, what is the policy there at yours and how strict are they with keeping track of the days aboard?
@TheSeaYallLife
@TheSeaYallLife Год назад
Thanks! We actually pay for a liveaboard slip at our marina, which does except livesboards. However, it’s very difficult to get a slip of any kind in this marina. Your best bet, unfortunately is probably Pier 32 in national city. Someone also told me this week they accept liveaboards in Mission Bay but I definitely would not want to be in there instead of the bay. From what I understand from having friends in different marinas, some marinas really do track how many days you were there, and others do not. Best of luck!

Amazing that you pay around $1000 a month for slip fees! I slip my 32’ Carver in Eastern NC, and I pay $15/ft! So to slip your 45’ here you would pay about the same as your paying out there! While it's true that a condo in San Diego would be much more expensive than the 200k boat, the monthly hoa and maintenance costs would be considerably less. Additionally, real estate appreciates, but boats depreciate over time. Living aboard a boat makes a little more sense in socal where real estate is so expensive, but I can't seem to justify the expense in other parts of the country where a condo may only be 300k. The monthly maintenance and slip costs are so much more than an hoa fee. I would love for this to make sense financially, I just don't see how.

If you live on a boat at anchor, full-time, then finding groceries and getting them to the boat would be really difficult. We are in a marina in the city and so there are many grocery stores within 10 minutes away. Living on a boat in Minnesota sounds so so cold! You must be a trooper!😀

If you buy a boat like this is it possible to do charters for fishing or just taking people on cruises to help offset some of the costs? I've been watching a lot of RU-vid videos about boats and yachts lately and it's a bit intriguing although it might be a little more than I can handle. Hello I'm in pacific beach, used to live in downtown, saving this year to get my own boat to live on, so do you recommend a cruiser? Or troller, I know absolutely nothing about boats and plan on spending around 40k for one to live on. Any recommendations? And is there any slips where u are that are available? Whats the difference from the slips and the bouey I see? How much do those cost
@TheSeaYallLife
@TheSeaYallLife Год назад
Sound like exciting plans! I personally would recommend a trawler because there is generally a lot more space and storage than on a similarly sized cruiser. Trawlers are well-built and you’ll have an easier time finding an older one that hopefully still works well… Look for one built in the 80s. For your price range, you might need to get one that is somewhat of a fixer-upper. Make sure the engines work really well and that the “fixing” part is cosmetic. It is very hard to find liveaboard slips. Try Pier 32 in National City and then get on a waiting list at the places you like best. I’m not sure of the cost of the mooring balls but I would think they would make life a lot more difficult since you have to get on a dinghy every time you need to go somewhere. Best of luck and keep us posted!

@@TheSeaYallLife But it won't cost 30 grand per year living in a house (not including the mortgage since you didn't have one for the boat) And when you sell the house it will likely appreciate in value.

It depends on the boat. Ours has a ton of space on aft deck and fly bridge, plus it’s very beamy.

I pay $200 for water and electricity plus boat slip. I pay $50 on food (family of 5) and $200 on gas. All together is $450 a month to live in a boat and eat sea food most of the time. It could be less if I’ll park on bay then in the slip.

So many unnecessary costs… Which makes it seem like this live is hard to attain. But - for example - you don’t have to get your hull and deck cleaned every month…
@TheSeaYallLife
@TheSeaYallLife Год назад
Honestly, you can live on a boat for way less than we spend, and can also liveaboard and spend way more than we do. When we retire, our expenses will drop significantly as we will do more maintenance ourselves. BTW, you absolutely must have your hull cleaned monthly in saltwater 😊

After 30 years, when you sell the house, you'll make that back. After 30 years owning this boat, you'll have spent $900,000 and have a boat no one wants to buy and no marina will insure.

You can cut that in half if you live on a smaller boat and do more maintenance on your own. Still $2500 a month isn’t bad considering a decent 2 bedroom apartment in San Diego costs that much.

This is crazy for people to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars on a depreciating money pit that is a boat. A $1M boat could lose half its value in 5 years vs a house that could increase in value by 50% in 5 years. I became a millionaire by investing in appreciating assets over years and I did not waste my money buying a boat. I bought an old 3bed and 2bath single family house in San Jose California for 800K in 2019. Now it is worth $1.4M and interest rates are at 7%! Unless you guys are already very wealthy, it is all fun and games until reality hits. The boating industry is always looking for suckers to buy their overprice products. There is the old saying that the happiest day for a boat owner is the day he buys the boat and the day he sells the boat.
@TheSeaYallLife
@TheSeaYallLife 20 дней назад
That’s why we spent $170,000 instead of hundreds of thousands much less a millions on our boat and we absolutely love living on the water. We also own a beautiful house in Texas that’s generating monthly income for us while we live our dream on our amazing but modest boat.😊
@TacoGrande007
@TacoGrande007 20 дней назад
@@TheSeaYallLife That is great that you still own your house. Do not sell it. A lot of youtubers out there going crazy selling their entire homes to go and live on a boat. Doing that is just foolish and crazy.
