We know electricity is cheaper then gas thus making electric vehicles the right choice. But what about maintenance? How much does maintenance cost for an electric vehicle? Is it more then a gas car? What should you be prepared for? We look at a Tesla owner who has hit 300,000 miles in his Tesla Model 3 and how much expense he has incurred.

It's shown that with normal care, batteries should level off around 80% +/- 5% in the long term unless there is a major failure (sort of like an ICE car blowing some critical part in the engine and needing a rebuild). If the range works with your regular drive at 80% you can drive it for a very long time.

Weight can't be the issue because a Tesla Model 3 weighs the same as a BMW 3 series (actually lighter than some trims of the BMW). I think it can more likely be attributed to mashing the accelerator more often since it's so much fun in a Tesla

I agree! My first set of tires lasted me about a year and a half because every start was a jackrabbit start. After paying $1600 for a set of Michelin CrossClimate SUVs I've become a bit more conservative on the jackrabbit starts and the tires look great even after 30,000 miles.

Dude, Of course driving hard is gonna wear down the tires faster on any car. And with Tesla‘s addictive instant hard torque that will kill tread quicker. But to your comment, a BMW 3 series weighs between 3100 pounds to 3600 pounds depending on trim. Model 3 weighs 3500-4000, single vs dual motors. Tesla is heavier. When you COMBINE acceleration or breaking or corners on a heavier car, that COMPOUNDS the treadwear kill factor.

@@teslasnek I did look it up that’s where I got my numbers. Maybe the google source was wrong. But anyway I used to have a 3 series a few years ago and tires on that car wear quickly too, which still shows that the extra heft can add to tire wear too. Just sayin. (Another consideration is that the model three performance comes with very soft performance tires, as do certain BMW models) so judging treadwear on those particular models is kind of fruitless on such soft rubber

I strongly think that tire wear is mainly due to how much you enjoy the accelerator pedal or take sharp corners at higher speed... Everything that put stress on a tire make it wear faster. I tell people only get an EV if you're in the market for a new car, not because gas prices are high, because EV's cost more to buy. And while EV's have less maintenance, repairs are way more expensive outside of the warranty and that's something to consider. I've never taken any ICE vehicle I've owned in for maintenance unless it was a warranty covered issue. I can change my own oil, never took me more than 15 minutes on any vehicle.

Has cars do not require brakes at 15000 miles. They can vary greatly. But 40,000-60,000 miles is very common on gas car brakes. And you replace them when worn out. Not by miles alone and pads cost $60-$100. With labor is $250-$350. EV tires don’t last less than any other heavy car with relatively small tires. My Mustangs and Corvettes would eat tires in 15,000 to a max of $25,000 miles. They were high performance tires with grippy rubber. Tire longevity is dependent on performance level / rubber hardness.
@barrygreen9967
@barrygreen9967 2 года назад
I think you may have misunderstood what he was trying to say with the brake pads he was dividing 300k miles by 15k miles and only adding the cost of brake pads not the rotors or callipers or labor. So 300k miles divided by 15,000 miles is 20. Multiply $30 which is kind of on the low end for brake pads by 20 and you arrive at the $600 he was referencing. You can still argue that most brakes last 50k to 60k miles even in that scenario when you add in the cost of rotors, pad and labor for one to two brake jobs that's well above the $600 he used in his calculation so if he uses your example six brake changes at 60,000 miles with just an unheard of cost for a shop to do them of $300 would make the example even worse for ice vehicles as this would be 3 times more than Raj used in his example.

@@warofhero well I hear you but the EV batteries don’t die after 100,000 miles. If they are maintained via proper charging cycles they can last hundreds of thousands of miles. Just like gas engines if properly maintained can last hundreds of thousands of miles. But if you’re automatically going to factor in replacing a battery just because it passes 100,000 miles then you must also factor in replacing a gas engine just because it past 100,000 miles and it’s also out of warranty. However you slice it it’s not a perfect comparison I thought he left a couple of these important pieces of info unchecked regardless of which side of the argument one is on.

It is very Abnormal to change your Tesla's battery (the run that makes you car go vs the 12 volt battery that runs lights, etc) during the life of the car. People tend to want to change cars hundreds of thousands of miles before the battery needs to be replace. As for how much range loss their is on a Tesla battery, it's about 1.5% per 100,000 miles vs something like an original Nissan Leaf which was about 40% range loss. Most often the mention of weight of electric cars is the electric vs the lightest weight gas cars and not an equivalent gas car and that is MUCH closer than people that hate electric cars wants to admit. Which is why this guy with the Model 3 had to change his tires a lot less often than would be expected if you took the WRONG figures and calculated how anti-Tesla/anti-electric vehicle people TRY to tell you. Are their people that have had to change their batteries in a Tesla (the ones that drive the car)? YES, ABSOLUTELY!!! Wait a minute, didn't I just say that batteries --usually-- last for hundreds of thousands of miles??? Junk for for electric cars. The faster that you fill up your batteries in an electric car the worse it is for the batteries. Which is why you only want to charge up your Tesla (or other) electric vehicle when you NEED to like on trips and not every time you need to "fill up" the batteries. Eet at McDonalds every meal your whole life and you won't have the same life expectancy that you do if you eat "reasonably" well. So ... only charge up at a Tesla Supercharger when you NEED to. While we're at it, do you gorge with every meal? My guess is that if you do you probably weigh (literally) as much as a car. Charging your electric vehicle's batteries to 100% all the time is just as bad for them. What you SHOULD do is charge them around 80% unless you NEED the longer range like you are going on vacation or something. EVEN THEN you really don't need to charge your Tesla (or other electric vehicle) up to 100%. How often are you going to drive for approximately 300 miles at a time? All the time? My guess is never. All your need to charge your battery up to is how long you are ACTUALLY going to drive, plus maybe 15% due to variation in altitude to make sure you make it to your next location. It only takes about 15 minutes to charge your Tesla 150 miles of range, assuming that the beginning and ending percentage ends up less than 80%. What my wife and I do is go get food, either at the grocery store or ... a fast food place, and then take our Tesla to a Tesla Supercharger and charge for maybe 20 minutes (that buffer because of altitude or excessive heat or cold which reduces range) which will gives us more than enough range until the next time we need to stop for a potty/food/get out and stretch for the sake of your health break from driving. Oh, and note that most Tesla Superchargers are within easy walking distance of places to go get something to eat. So you can take your car to the charger and start charging it and THEN go get your food. Just don't take too long because once your Tesla had totally charged up (unless there are a lot of cars charging at that location and then Tesla might limit you to charging to 80% if you want more or not) they will start charging you for taking up the charging space making it so that other people can't use that charging port. My wife and I bought our Tesla Model Y long range when I was 59 and she was a few years older than me (which she still is of course) and I FULLY expect this Model Y to last for the rest of my driving life and beyond. Hopefully (though I'm not counting on it) Tesla Full Self Driving will get past the beta stage before I have the ability to get into a car (not to drive but get into one at all) so that I can experience the joy of telling the car I want to go to X and it drives me there all on its own without me having to have me or anyone else behind the steering wheel. Hopefully this answers more of your questions.

Maintenance cost is only part of the cost picture, and anyone doing cost comparison between EV and ICE should actually do a TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) comparison. So also look into purchase cost, insurance, repairs, battery replacement. You will see that these are anywhere from 10% to 50% more on EVs. Another issue is the fact that only Tesla can service them and there is very little third party service available. I found out the hard way that these cars are quite difficult to diagnose and service. This is only going to get worse when there are more Teslas on the road, quality drop due to higher mass production, Tesla service unable to keep up with demand. Being a software engineer I know that software defects constantly rise as the software base increases and requires much more testing with higher number of features while maintaining backward compatibility

Why would anyone add a cost for something they are not replacing. Only an idiot would add the cost of a battery pack to the total cost of ownership. Why would an owner of a Tesla do that when on the flip side the requirement for an Ice vehicle to factor in the cost of an engine and transmission?
@AllanSustainabilityFan
@AllanSustainabilityFan 2 года назад
As indicated, the owner of the vehicle, after 300k miles, is still using his original batteries and gets more than 80 percent of the original capacity. And after 300k miles, an ICE vehicle would likely be on its second engine and transmission if not third, most people don't keep their cars at that point because with 20k moving parts that platform is too high maintenance to hang on to. EVs only have 20 moving parts by comparison, and operate at significantly lower temperature variances (under 200f vs around 2900f in a combustion platform), which in turn makes it easier to design them around self contained/closed loop systems, which leads to much longer lasting lubricants and such.
