Many people are asking about the phone plan! I'm on a mega plan with my family and we have Verizon. I don't actually know how many people are on the plan, but yes, I'm one of those millennials still on their parents phone plan. 😅🤷🏼‍♀️

How Much does it cost to live in a van? 🤔💸
I get this question ALL THE TIME. So I decided to start tracking all of my expenses. 📊
I’ve also compared my expenses to the national average because I like data and numbers.
Average Rent in America: $959
(Source: www.deptofnumbers.com/rent/us/)
My Average Rent: $198.49-$378.49
Gas: $70-250
Car Insurance: $128.49
Average Utilities in America: $171
Source: (www.energystar.gov/products/w...)
My Average Utilities: $85.60-$126.60
Trash: $0
Water (Gym Membership): $6-$47
Water (pay showers at $5 per shower): $30
Water (Laundry): $10
Phone: $15
Internet Coffee Shops: $20
Propane: $4.60
Electricity: $0
Total American Average Expenses: $1130
My Total Average Expenses: $274.09-$495.09
This is a HUGE oversimplification. I did not include repairs and maintenance, and I didn't include food, camping (I don't typically pay for camping), etc. I am hoping this will give people a good base line understanding of the average costs of gas + 'utilities' and nothing more. If you are interested in ALL of my expenses, please let me know in the comments and I'll see if I can go back over the last two years an average out my expenses.

This makes me feel so much more relieved because I want to start doing something like a van life so I don’t have to get a house, it’s been hard doing research about van life especially since I’m only 16 and don’t know what im doing 😅. Awesome video! Yea the costs are very interesting compared to living in a house! We've been in our van for about 3 months (documenting it on our channel) and love how much we've been able to downsize our bills and obligations. Keep up the good work Kaya!

It's Awesome!! Full disclosure, i've got a Chief Nokahoma headress of woman i've dated....this one girl was Always taking too long when i was going to pick her up (dating, where you actually make plans and pick the girl up...Wow, whoda thunk?) Anyhoo....once we got 'Biblical' she took a shower at my place and got out, her hair was Rockin Mega curls!! I was like, WtFrancis?? She had always been ironing her hair flat beforehand, hah. That changed quickly ; )

It occurred to me today that I don't count insurance as a "rent" expense because I'd still be paying it anyway even if I was living in an apt...

food is my biggest expense but Im a big eater. Im counting on spending around 900 total once I purchase my van. Thats total. food insurance gas maintenance entertainment beer, everything

I didn't include things that I figured would be a huge variable for other people. I just wanted to focus on 'van specific' costs. Food is super different for everyone so I didn't think it would translate well for people trying to calculate vanlife costs!

I'm so jealous of Americans! In Canada, unlimited data isn't even a thing. I think it caps out at like 9GB on a cell phone plan, and that would cost well over $100!

Hi kaya, you forgot another factor. Your home is also your transport! People who live in a traditional home have the expense of a car on top. So you need to deduct the average cost of car ownership out of your figures surely?☺

I was planning on just having a break down of basic costs! There were a lot of things I didn't account for. Like homeowners insurance, car repairs and expenses... This is just a starting point for people!

You are very close but I think the dept. of numbers is behind on average rents in calif. (LA) to be exact ! A one bedroom is $ 1,500 a month a small loft singles $1,000 a month .. so I have given up I’m looking into a motorhome toy hauler a 30.foot I use to drive 24’ limos so I don’t mind the extra 5.feet .. You say that’s not ruffing it ! .. I was just so used to living in a 1 bdrm .. that to me a van would be impractical and the fact I have 2 bikes had a car but lost it .. again working hard to pocket a greedy landlord so he can get his mommy a Mercedes screw that !.. 4 years a go I had two cars and apt..now I just have 2 bikes so they would definitely have to be with me and not in storage..between payment and ins gas misc .. I would average about $480 a month to me that’s not bad my job is reopening again soon ( finally !! ) hoping get in to it by aug / sept trying to get a used one with 18,000 to 26,000 miles no less than a 2017..what do think ? Again space wise I know it’s a little bigger even with out the slider open I would just have the right amount of living space .. found 2 by the same maker one has two beds bigger bathroom and the other has 3 beds smaller bathroom but the garage is the same and my bikes can go where I go 🏍🏍 .. any tips or advice I would like to hear ur opinion.. 😀 wish I new how to this instantgram thing and that way i can touch base with people for advice

It all depends on not only the state you are insured in but the location in said state. Insurance in NYC is insanely expensive and upstate NY no so much.

Weeeeell the transmission cost about $3700, there was also a blown out transmission control module, plus labor to put everything in, plus tax and warranty. It shook out to be about 6k. And its the cost of a new van... but not a sprinter van :P

In my opinion Van/RV life costs way too much because you have to follow draconian laws made by corrupt politicians as well as give up some of your sovereignty by submitting to those 'laws' and drivers licenses registrations ( meaning you Don't fully own your Van/RV it's Co-owned by the state), buying gas which is a scam in itself and you are expected to know those laws in every state you travel to which is near impossible because they vary. Van/RV life doesn't bring you freedom if you are still a slave to the system.

Droid, you're describing according to the 'all-or-nothing' fallacy. Very few things are so clearly demarcated. For example, the freedom to reduce one's monthly expenses by making choices is an aspect of overall freedom. The freedom to leave an area when one wishes to go, without being penalized for breaking a lease, is another aspect of freedom. There are many points-of-view one can take, and no single point-of-view is exclusively correct. So, granted, there are always going to be ties to the system for all but the most die-hard ideologists, but in a relative sense, who could argue that more freedom isn't better than less freedom? Context matters :)
