Helloooo 👋🏻
It's my annual Vanlife Lessons video! Except its 6 months late because 2020 has been one hell of a year. Sorry for the major delay 🙈
I wanted to talk about something a little bit more personal this year. Living in a van can be really hard. The last few years have been unbelievable, but I also suffered from extreme depression and anxiety that was partially related to living in a van.
I wanted to talk about these things because we spend so much time idealizing the vanlife fantasy, but we don't often talk about the impacts of vanlife on mental health. My intention is not to prevent anyone from trying out the vanlife, but to address important topics of mental health while traveling. If you have been on the road for an extended period of time and it's starting to get to you, please know you're not alone!
Anyway, I hope this video is helpful to those of you looking into vanlife as an option for full-time travel. And I hope it doesn't scare anyone away from giving it a try!
Stay safe out there 🚐💕

Crazy to hear you voice so many thoughts and feelings that I have been struggling to find the right way to express or simply written off telling myself it’s all in my head. Appreciate you taking the time to put it in words and share even of only to let the rest of us know we’re not alone or ridiculous for feeling the same!

I’ve struggled with all of these things in my 4+ years of vanlife but not to such extremes. I remember feeling just as lonely when I lived in apartments and houses with roommates. Vanlife allowed me to be the king of my own castle instead of the third wheel or an extra in someone else’s story.

I've been living in a van for 3 years, and now I have a sprinter van I'm building out. But yeah I got the 170 extended base so I have space to sit at the computer, shower and do my makeup. I also have a fold up bed to make more space in the kitchen /dining area oh and everyone needs a oven =^.^= But as a Trans girl I can see why living in a van leads to social anxiety. PROTIP: if the police ever knock on your door late at night, throw a headset on, open your computer and tell them your playing video games with your friends..... they will be confused and ask you if you were sleeping there, or intend to sleep there and if you say no I'm just gaming with my friends, you're allowed to be parked on any legal street for up to 48 hours. The cops have no choice but to warn you its illegal to sleep in your car (in some places) and then they leave. I love to park nearby this hotel at the beach, they have really fast Wi-Fi. I had the police called on me a few times but having your lights on inside is actually only proof that you're not asleep.

I looked up your channel again this week as I followed you for a long time and then closed my YT and social media accounts for awhile. I wondered if you were still in your van as the last I had seen, you'd just moved into the house. Everything you said (even though I live in houses, not vans) really resonates and I am so glad you've had the time to really take a look at your self-care and sense of belonging as priorities. Living in a van is tough when it comes to finding a spot every day. Here I think it's even more difficult in the U.S. I normally have chosen to live on the outskirts of cities, in rural spots, alone, and I recently started wondering why that is. It served a purpose for awhile. A large part of it, for me, was originally to prove that I COULD do it. Now I am wondering if I actually WANT to do it. It's so good to see that you're still making videos. I have a few to catch up on now, yay! :-) Sending you a hug from Ireland!

Man, you're speakin what I've been feeling. I've got 5 years down and being treated like a pariah has really started to get to me. Particularly in these days where we're all connecting less with other humans, i really need it to be positive and it hits hard when it isn't. My brains pet distortions are usually and being unwanted or rejected, and i have less opportunity these days to balance that out with folks who do want me. It IS a trade, but for me, for now, it's still a good trade. Happy Vanniversary!

But above all you need to to listen to what your heart and mind and soul are saying, heed that message and care for yourself, whatever way you need. Be safe, and keep on doing your thing. Thank you for sharing your journey these last few years, Ive really enjoyed your story. Its given moments of inspiration and escape during my own journey. Big Hugs!

What a beautiful and honest portrayal of the REAL pitfalls of Van life. I must be honest also. I am addicted to watching the van life builds on RU-vid. However, I’ve 110% seen what you said happen to other Van lifers from the window notes to sitting on the curb being detained or searched. The constant search for (water and electricity ) is stressful enough. Just like tiny home communities I wish they had a gigantic area for permanent Van lifers that would not have to leave the area by a certain amount of days. Sure when you’re young or older and retired you might want the excitement of living on the road. But never having a community or a place to comfortably stay especially when you’ve been driving all day and night has to be stressful. And if the parks are booked or full how can you guarantee the neighborhood you arrive in is safe or even wants you there. But the other issue is maintenance while on the road. That’s got to be stressful too. And the cost...🤑🤑🤑. If a shop knows you are from out of town or not a regular imagine what that bill will be when your van is complete unless they are honest. I love what you have done. At least you can park outside your home and fill up , chill up and power up and go on the road for short trips. Then when you are on your last ounce of sleep deprivation from driving you can pull up , lock up , and settle up and the only note you will read is welcome home 🏠. 👑

I’m going into my 2nd year now and having a LOT of the same feelings and anxiety.. feeling of being unwanted everywhere I go or park and also finding it difficult to hang with people who don’t live like this. People romanticizing this lifestyle should know everything you went over In this video. Thanks for making it. Good luck in the house hunt!

Thank you, Sister, for this video. It addressed a lot of potential issues that I have been thinking about. Being a climber myself, I am very familiar with what brings many of us into this sport. I think a lot of us suffer from anxiety and past trauma in the first place. Living in the van for a long time definitely can aggravate the existing problems and bring new ones into the game. I am thankful that you put these issues into the light spot.

Kind of you to share your experience. At age 60, I began my first year of van life, now on my second. Living in S&B I have had all those feelings of anxiety (feeling stuck in a mold) and feeling like I don't belong anywhere. Thank you for all that you have shared Kaya. I empathise with you- I found your channel a few years ago. I converted my own van- which I lived in for a year. It wasn't all I thought it would be... life seems full of transitions, and nothing is forever. That's what makes experiences special. Who we are is not defined by our lifestyle, or hobbies. It takes a special kind of person to create and share free public content- I am confident that you have many amazing life experiences on the way! You're amazing Kaya- take care of yourself. I'll almost certainly never meet you, and that saddens me :)

Very interesting honest viewpoint of how van life can affect people's psyche. I can't imagine what iit is like to always be looking for a safe place to sleep at the end of the day. It's not something I could consider for the long time although for a few months a year I can understand why some people do it.

Hi Kaya, thank you for this very reflecting post. I can absolutely relate to this even though I'm not living in my van full time. I'm also putting a lotta thoughts to several topics you mentioned. Starting with the struggle to always find a safe and welcome spot to park for the night. It can be very exhausting and can lead to a general feel of stress. I even feel like I failed big time when giving up on looking for a spot and just checking in a campsite since I sometimes have this "outdoor-dirtbag-dude-whatever"-image of myself - not healthy either. I think it's very important to let go of certain images we have in our heads. Social media is not helping with this. It's pretty much the same like the standards of beauty it suggests. It's also telling you what you have to do, to be a "real" vanlifer, climber, dirtbag, minimalist etc. but balance is important and the knowledge that you don't have to follow rules to be a certain someone. It's a privilege to be able to dress up glamorous and have dinner at a fancy restaurant but at the same time sleep in a van and not showering for days. It's a privilege to be multifaceted :)

I think you voice what a lot of social butterflies feel . I’m glad someone different voiced this different out look. I already planned a Vanners Community so I kind of sensed this need to have others around and feel enveloped by this level of acceptance. My Vanlife planning has been planned to include this need to keep up with self and make way for socializing as well as my enjoying being away from people. Even not being a social butterfly their are times you go to be around friends and family. If you don’t plan those “appearances “ you feel even more awkward. I haven’t had a lot of the being kicked out except in one “too all self important“ neighborhood and funny enough it was while staying with family in her driveway, was insane the hostility she endured from allowing just under two weeks! Again thanks for sharing because it’s a point everyone needs to incorporate! 😊💯👍🏽❤️

Hey Kaya. I have all the empathy in the world for you. I went thru life feeling like this which led to addiction and an even more shit life. I'm 10 yrs clean and just converting a van with a view to living fulltime to have more freedom etc, but with my life's experience have been pulling away from the idea because I have come to understand our need to belong, to have that sense of community, to feel needed, to feel liked and loved, yes that sense of belonging. With your experiences and others on the road, I can fortunately now see the down side of being 'different' in other people's eyes and how it would affect me psychologically/physically. I've felt alienated and alone before...don't need that shit...don't deserve that shit...neither do you. You deserve better, we all do, so with much love and respect to you I hope and wish with all my heart that you grab hold and hang on tight to your selfworth, your self esteem, as I did (and hopefully will continue to) and continue to be the kind beautiful person you are , to be the kind of YOU you want to be. Much love to you hun and thankyou for your brilliant share.❤. Namaste.( Nick from across the pond in the UK)

Hi Kaya. Every prospective van lifer needs to watch this and REALLY take it to heart.. No one wants to face an uncomfortable truth regarding their dreams, so, unfortunately few will take your experience as anything that could possibly happen to them, but still it needed to be said.. So, thank you for saying it, and saying it beautifully.. For whatever reason, living in a house seems to be vilified by many in the van life community, but for me, it's simply a choice.. Nothing more and nothing less. I applaud you for sharing your thoughts and experience with those willing to listen.. Peace...

van life is hardcore, the feeling of not belonging anywhere and having to move often is tiring.. It can feel lonely at times & isolating when people treat you ought to move on even if you just parked at a spot for a little while. What can help is volunteering or getting a job in a field where there are people interested like a park or with animals & then can meet lots of people and sometimes even a parking spot is included

Wow... I remember you posting about moving into an apartment/house and it seemed like the right thing to do. Personally, I first started following a few van-life and fulltime RV folks simply to get build-out ideas for my own build. But some years later, I still follow a number of the channels. While my van build has always been intended to be for part-time trips, I do still wonder about what fulltime life would be like. I've enjoyed watching your adventures but totally understand if you are tired of the RU-vid grind. All of that said, be aware that living in a house and having a great deal of stability doesn't necessarily bring mental peace.

I live in a house and I've struggled with neighbors telling people they can't park in front their house on a public road. People making you feel unwelcome is not a reflection of you or your choices. It clearly indicates a failure to understand the duty to welcome and comfort the stranger. If you and Rex find the wind blowing you East, I'll find you hundreds of places to park. Just know the climbing sucks.

I am 35 and looking into vanlife. The things you mention are things I fear the most but often wonder if are or can be mitigated by staying at RV parks or owning land. I’m most interested in the off grid aspect of vanlife, to me I was hoping it’d be a moving tiny house. Being able to park outside friends houses was something I was looking forward to but I would hate to get them in trouble from their HOA. It’s just a bit of a bummer it’s hard to find tiny house and/or off grid nearer to cities because I feel that’s what I’m really wanting.

I don’t think this video is a downer, but a lot of the things you’re talking about are things that have solutions. 1.) There are places to park if you use apps to help you 2.) I get the whole showering less thing, but planet fitness memberships are cheap and or you could possibly upgrade the van 3.) Feeling like you can’t go anywhere bc you don’t have clothes? Are you unable to go buy regular clothes? I know space can be an issue, but lots of ppl add cabinets and stuff to their vans. 4.) social anxiety definitely sounds like it could be rough having it on the road. Are you able to meet up and make friends with other van life ppl? It’s a whole huge community of folks. I kind of feel like maybe you’re just tired of the lifestyle (which is completely fine), but a lot of the things you were mentioning seem to be fixable....

Perhaps one day I have one day to go on weekend trips or short travel but I'll think I'm always gonna need a homebase. At least in this life. ;) Even though I like the idea and the concept of being on the road full-time. Thanks for the inspiring thoughts and your openness to talk about your learnings!

I don't get kicked out of places anymore. I make sure where I choose to park is legal to do so. I don't park in neighborhoods, streets, etc. And I dislike parking at friends' houses. I make sure I find a way to provide my own showers and my own comfy space.

Good for you. I love your honesty on the ups and downs of full+timing. Loving it, personally, not for everyone. Of course, I'm retired. Different psychological syndrome. Keep posting. I am a fan.

Great to see your face! Life wouldn’t be an adventure without the bad parts, I’m glad you’ve found a path that works for you. Every time I start to feel sorry for myself, I think about the Buddha on the lotus and it helps me look at what’s happening around me from a third person perspective. I learned that from Eckhart Tolle, not sure if that helps, but I drop that nugget every time I can. :D Thank you for sharing and take care :)

Dang. Its ironic i already do feel this way, wich is why i want to go into van touring. Everywhere I've ever worked, or lived I've felt alienated & isolated. Figure if life is going to be this isolating & filled with rejection i might as well just go & enjoy the wilderness. Three years is a long time though. I just want to try it out for a year.

I so get this. I'm a woman of color and it's so freaking normal to feel like this. 50% of society is ok, 25% is awesome, and 25% sucks and I never know when that 25% is going to pop up or how it's going to turn out when they do. Living with that constant anxiety gets really tiring and it's why there are so many communities where people of color reside and aren't trying to leave. While those communities are rarely economically prosperous, they're safe from racism, stable and predictable. They allow you to take full, deep breathes. Feeling like an outsider, always being on guard, always holding your breathe, always knowing one person could completely ruin your day for no reason other than you walked on the same aisle as them (which has happened) is a weight that will eventually break your spirit if you don't get some relief from it. I love to travel and I come from parents who loved to travel. Now I have a home, my home base, that I'm never in because I travel in my SUV. While I think the big vans are adorable, I'll never get one. Vans just attract too much attention and that's the opposite of what I need to do traveling alone. In my SUV, I can park almost anywhere and no one has a clue I'm inside. I also spend 50% of my time in the city and 50% in nature so I don't start feeling completely alienated from "normal" society. I craze adventure AND I love routine so my life is a perpetual balancing act. Having a house grounds me, and living out of my SUV allows me to fly. It's the perfect balance for me. Now I'm off to see what you did after this. ❤️

Girl, it's year five living in my van... And you hit the nail on the head. I felt all of these things too. In year one, somebody calls the cops on you, and it's a funny adventure because When you identify as an upper middle class white girl, somebody calling the cops on you is hilarious... Four years on, somebody calls the cops on you, and yes, it feels like being unwanted is becoming part of your psyche. Anyway, thank you for expressing what so many of us feel. I still prefer the van to a house :-) but these are real issues.

Van life can be so lonely. Especially as we get older. I'm 43 and it's hard to connect with the younger people that make up the majority of climbing populations.

Stealth is very important. You need to look like a well maintained commercial vehicle, not a living space. And you cannot park in front of houses.

Maybe the reason for having anxiety could be signs of moving back to a house and having a social crowd.

"You can't stay here at all". I would see that as rejection. "You can't stay here forever". I would see that as practical. How many days stay is reasonable, 14? I have a 20 acre farm that I would like to open to vanlifers, but it's not set up like the campground that my father used to run. It's near a lake but not on the lake. It's 40 miles from Cincinnati. With no real points of interest, it would be more of a stop over between destinations.

I suffer from anxiety. I don't see me living in my camper (squaredrop camper). I need 4 walls. I need people and love around me. Are people really that mean to vanners. You never told us that. I see myself going out for a week or two during the summer. But not alone. I can't do alone.

The over all experience I'd had is that people are really nice to vanlife folks. However, people misunderstand your intentions a lot of the time AND in certain places folks are sick of vanlifers who treat the places they park badly. We're not all perfect, and those of us who don't act well, end up making a bad name for the rest of us.
