Excellent video buddy. I like your truck and it scoots well. Ironically I used the same draggy app TODAY to test 0-60 on my 2017 Nissan Titan. I recently installed 275/70/18 mud terrain tires on it (which im kind of regretting) . Dropped 3mpg overall and I can feel the engine trying harder to accelerate. I did 0-60 in 7.3 seconds over and over again.
That is ironic! I think I dropped 2 mpg. These tires were a tad more aggressive than I wanted to go but the price was right and they had good reviews. Thanks for watching!
New Tundra that you never beat on, my bet is the ECU was learning trims & iteratively tweaking it's fueling & ignition trim tables, hence the improvement
If your tires are larger/taller it effectively changes your gear ratio and completely negates your test... A better test would be to simply add weight to the same tire and wheel package.
This test is not good at all for adding WEIGHT. Would need to install same size tires with different weights. And that is easy to do. Just jumping between an SL, XL and LT will give 1-15 pounds of different weight.
It actually gears it up. Numerically wise. Overall it would lower your rpm's at the same speed versus the shorter tire. Like going from a 3.42 to a 3.25. Numerically it's taller geared. As in top gear convertor locked up the tire would be traveling further down the road per revolution. Rolling resistance. Tire plys and air pressure makes a difference as well. But that's splitting can't hairs. Lol
Besides tyres getting warmer...I guess for each successive run, you were turning the 4wd to 2wd slightly earlier in the run, might be that helped with time.
Biggest difference was that the road was wet on first runs and almost dry on second with heavier wheels meaning much warmer tires. That changes rolling resistance a lot!. If the heavier tires have also lower rolling resistance it can also help in that heavy car. On wet road tire temp is same as road and on dry its +30 to +40 celsius higher.
He doesn't beat on his truck, but he knows to launch in 4x4 mode, then switch back to 4x2 mode. It's wild that the Toyota transfer case can switch on the fly at high speeds. I don't believe my Ram will switch above 15-20 mph.
I'm surprised it was that little of a difference in a straight line! In turns you would probably see more of a difference but you're not gonna be corner carving in a truck anyways. Not gonna notice 0.1 second difference in the real world, but definitely looks cooler!
a high torque v8 an v6 handles bigger tires better than 4cylinders. on my celica i replaced the stock 15 inch rims an 195/60/r15 with a 16inch rim an 205/50/r16 ventus an my car turned in to a turd
I don't think it's actually switching from 4wd to 2wd while under load. The "4hi" flashing is the truck's way of saying, "waiting for a chance to do that." Doesn't really make any difference, but those first runs were 4 hi the whole way.

Dude... do NOT swap between 2WD and 4WD under heavy throttle! Not smart! Also, use Tow Haul mode, will cut a bit of time off your runs as well, just quicker throttle tip in response.
I'm a Mopar guy but the fuel economy on the Tundra ain't that bad as far as full size V8 pickups are concerned. Kind of middle of the road. To say it has crappy fuel economy given the gladiator exists is way too harsh on the yota.
@PIPSBURGHVIEWS Well yeah but turbo gas trucks like the ecoboost are kind of a different type of truck all together...What you save on gas you may very well spend on walnut blasting your valves or spinning a bearing. Not sure about the new Toyota V8 but the previous generation was a stupid simple design. It used to be a solid performer with rock solid reliability with okay gas mileage for a full size pickup of the era.
Holy Moley! I just mounted Falken 205/60r16 A/T Trails on my 205/55r16 Corolla Hatchback & gained 7lbs ea wheel/tire (28lb total gain). I thought I got fat:)
Here is what I know. Anybody who had an M4 and is happy to run 15 sec 1/4's is going backwards. Get the Transam, the mullet and the goldchain and get fast again. Lol

Buddy, how are you comfortable taking your hand off the wheel when going that fast? Like i get you're going in a straight line, mistakes are unlikely in that scenario on that road, but they're so unforgiving when you're moving like that

I wanted to ask the same thing. Just from what I can hear in the video, those tires sound as loud as the ProComp 35/12.50/20's I put on my F150. Those were the loudest tires I have ever had on a vehicle. Needless to say, I kept them 2 days and took them back and traded for the good ol' Nitto Ridge Grappler's. The ProComps are a harder compound, have a more aggressive tread pattern, and are more expensive than the Nittos, ($350 vs. $315 per tire) but still the difference in noise is shocking. The Nittos are great in the woods and over rocks and actually have a good tread life. They will be my go to from now on.
With heavy wheels it is harder to accelerate and stop only, once heavy wheels start moving you don't need as much power to keep rolling as with the light wheels. Basically once heavy wheels start rolling the centrifugal force just keeps them going with less and less effort. You will gain in mpg on long trips vs light wheels but, you will hate heavy wheels for city mpg.
Interesting results. Will be interesting to see long term mileage results. The other truck is quick. It’s quicker in the quarter mile than me on my 2004 Honda Goldwing. What is the drag app that you are using called? Also sub #399 on your friends channel
What horsepower & torque number does your Toyota engine produce? I mean, I drive a BMW E90 turbocharged 2.0 liter diesel with 221 lbf-ft torque and 143 hp, with 6-speed automatic. Current setup is 16 inch wheels with 18.7 lbs each wheel. I want to install 18 inch wheels which have 25.2 lbs each, so 6.5 lbs difference per wheel. Will this affect my acceleration and 1/4 mile time? I mean, if it is 0.1s I can live with it, but not more. Great video btw., tbh the results shocked my (pleasantly).
381HP and 401ft.lbs. Unfortunately, I think there will be a noticeable difference in acceleration on your BMW. I would look for a lighter weight wheel. Thanks for watching!

Was the temperature the same for each day? Density altitude can make a big difference unless it's a turbo truck. 40 lbs per wheel should have been at least .4-.5 slower. That's impressive.
Hey Brian, from a mechanic's perspective, is it bad to use 4x4 shift on the fly while flooring it? I assume not since you did it here, but what is actually happening underneath when you make the shift?
I would not do it while under heavy load. I shifted in to 4x4 and let it engage before I launched. On most vehicles, when you shift into 4x4 the front axle ends mesh into the front hubs electronically or with vacuum.
@@PIPSBURGHVIEWS I see, so it's only really an issue if you're shifting into 4x4. Are you saying that shifting into 2wd under load is much less risky, if at all?
I am interested to know if you only added 44lbs total will all 4 wheels included or 44lbs per wheel totaling 176lbs of rotational mass? It would make sense if you only added a total of 44lbs to drop only a 1/10th. But you should have dropped quite a bit more if you added 176lbs.
I feel like I dropped a ton I added a total of about 300 pounds such a huge difference I mean after tuning and all it’s slightly faster than a bone stock truck but if I threw some stocks on it’s be a lot better
