First off thank you for this video (i appreciate all your content but honesty in this one is rare on yt) US based. If i can pitch in and say that it all comes down to who the client is... I'm in no way a pro but i realized that if i want to make money i need better clients so i started doing corporate work and I charge $1.600 a day (8hr) for a simple to mid gear setup. It's so stupid to say (i wish it was more transparent and straightforward) but just get comfortable asking for what you need/want and from the interactions you'll figure out what you can charge to whom
@topicruben
@topicruben 2 года назад
Grazie Matteo! No everyone is transparent about this topic. It takes a lot of courage, but most of all to be sure and confident about yourself. I remember some years ago when I client called me to do a big gig all around Italy, a beautiful opportunity, and I had NO idea of how much I could charge. You can imagine the stress- so writing to friends here and there and yes, there’s always the sensation of “shit, I could’ve asked for more money” but you can’t be greedy at the beginning. Then it comes the second and 3rd etc…, and after the lockdown EVERYTHING stopped in here. There’s no job 😭😭😭. Hopefully things will change soon. Anyway, thanks a lot for enlightening us with your perspective 🙏

Good distinction between "crew member" and "production company" prices. People forget, if you're running a company, there are expenses you have to cover first before you pay yourself, thus the need for a higher rate with a bigger markup.
@Chromedbustop
@Chromedbustop 2 года назад
I found that something that really helps when trying to determine pricing is not just the specific numbers, but WHY that price. It was hard for me to decide on a price, and while the numbers helped, actually sitting down and figured out what my own expenses were really helped a lot. AND that made it easier to justify if a client wanted to understand why something cost a certain amount.

Some really helpful information. My problem is ive been doing this for 5-6 years now and its been a roller coaster. Weddings were always my profit maker pre covid since I could charge $2800 or more for a 10 hour wedding. But I moved into the commercial world and even shot some portfolio stuff. But ive had such a hard time getting clients. Its like pulling tooth and nail to get a company where I live (In Kentucky) to see the benefits of media production. Kind of debating if I should pack my bags and move somewhere better because Weddings are now non existent after covid and commercial work is just impossible to get into considering most companies wouldn't dare pay over $500 for a full production since everyone here is so tight with company budgets and stuff.

Appreciate the insight. Do you tend to include grip/lighting as well in your day rate? I didn't at first but then my company grew and I acquired more gear but I kept my day rate at $1500. I've learned pretty fast that I need a PA or two which I'd like to raise my rate for but business has been a little slow. I agree with the balance option, except my biggest change lately is I went from about 400-500 a day for editing to $750. I bottlenecked myself and realized I needed to price all editing fairly and not continue to hand it out, production after production.

How do you seek out and find new clients if you don't have word of mouth working for you enough yet? Thank you! it's an incredibly oversaturated market where anyone already has a video guy or a cinematographer or a production company. Especially in California I think it's extremely hard to find new clients. The MOST I can make in a day in South Africa is equivalent to like $180 (Or if I do a wedding, shooting the whole day and editing included, $400 for the whole package) And it leads to either working your butt off for little money so it doesn't help you grow and you get stuck, or you "rush" projects and the quality isn't your 100% but you can do more jobs to survive but then your portfolio doesn't look so good. Do you have any experience with working internationally and how a person can get their foot into that door so that I can actually grow as a film maker and that the projects I work on are good for my portfolio instead of having 100's of crappy half assed youtube videos on my channel that make me look bad lol.
