Is it worth it to upgrade the antenna of your helium hotspot miner? Really enjoyed the video! My only suggestion would be to try changing only one factor at a time so you can isolate how much antenna height and dbi effect your earnings independently. Very informative, liked and subbed.

Thanks for watching, Mike! It's very easy. You just buy the device. Turn it on and follow the instructions in the Helium app. Then it takes 2-3 days to sync. Then you start earning. That's it. Any extra work is just optimizing where you put it and what antenna setup you use. But you can always just use what it comes with. Best of luck!

I went the same exact route pretty much! I got a bobcat as my first miner and got my ROI in one month with the stock antenna. I then managed to snag two goldspot miners in the last MNTD drop and one of the goldspot miners is now doing better than my bobcat with the stock 2.3DBi antenna! The other one however is doing rather horrible at the current location only bringing in $0.25/24h, yikes!

Is it worth buying a bobcat miner vs waiting for another mntd drop? I have a mntd gold miner and it's avg'ing .15-.2 HNT per day, not much competition in my area. I'm planning on putting it in a friends house who has an empty hexagon soon! Would also love to see a part of your video breaking down changing locations + paying the $10 fee. Great content!!

If the next MNTD drop goes better than the most recent one, then I think it's very worth it to try for that. But if it's another bust, I would consider just ordering more bobcats. Sounds like you are in a great area for miners. Yeah, I could probably cover the location change in a future video. It's a pretty easy process! Thanks for watching!

Hi there! Just found your channel. I'm still waiting for a Calchip RAK miner...it says on or before Q2 of 2022, lol, I ordered it in April of this year. Ugh. I'm still on it and excited to get it, but still a bummer. I can put it on my third floor of my house, so hopefully it will get a lot of reach!

Hey Andy I just set up my bobcat 300 last night with the stock antenna. It is still syncing. I have a 5.8 dbi antenna from RAK ready to install. In order to install it, can I just power off the miner by unplugging the power cable, connect the new antenna for the stock one, and power it back on? Do I have to re-sync or anything? I definitely don’t want to damage the miner by doing any part of the upgrading antenna process incorrectly

New question for you. Can you explain more your reasoning behind going with the 3 dbi antenna vs the 5 dbi? I would think the higher dbi would mean more witnesses. I live in Los Angeles and have a bobcat miner and it's not performing very well so I'm looking to make some upgrades and my first thought was a new antenna. There are a ton of other miners around me, and I have access to place my antenna outside on my balcony.

Higher dbi means that the signal goes farther horizontally, but not vertically, lower dbi means less horizontal distance, but you will have more height to go over obstacles. An example would be if you live in Kansas out in the middle of nowhere and the topography is totally flat, you would want something like 8dbi, but if you live in New York, where another Hotspot could be at the top of a skyscraper, you would want something like 3dbi to get you the height in all directions.

Calculate the correct tx/rx gain for that cable and connectors and I’ll bet it’s around 4dbi. Plug it in and see how it goes!

Loss on 50 foot of lmr400 is about 2db. So 40 foot is less

Whats up Andy those daily earnings are decent for the present. I've been lucky to break .2 hnt lately. Glad you were able to get some improvement with an outdoor antenna and that beautiful mast!! To improve witness beacons, yes my friend Bigger IS better. A lower DBI in your location will get more witnesses of your beacons but thats not where the money is. The money is in witnessing other miner's beacons. Go 8DBI! Don't listen to all the nay sayers. The concentration of the signal isn't nearly as effectual as some would claim. The larger surface area of your 8Dbi antenna will be much more sensitive to pickup up beacons from other miners. Think of all the massive radio telescopes we see in the media. There is a reason why they are so large. Check you a Laird FG9026. Its an 8Dbi but 6 DBD antenna. In laymen terms its an 8DBI that performs like a 6. Best of both worlds. Good luck with the sale Wednesday.

I use ethernet, but you can use Wifi if your hotspot supports it. Not sure on exact speed needed, but bandwidth needed is at least 20-30GB a month.

Regarding outdoor mining: When it's freezing cold outside, will the case still protect the miner or will the cold destroy it? Is the only real outdoor miner the nebra? Do you live in a location where the temperature never goes below 0 degrees celcius?

Don't place the miner outside, just the antenna, unless you have an outdoor hotspot. Run a wire to the hotspot from the antenna.

Ethernet (RJ45) is the best way to connect them, but most of them have WiFi and people use that successfully. Just depends on where you set it up. Best of luck

I got 2 on last drop. Worked fine for a week then went relayed. How did you get it off relay? I've opened the port and done everything in the videos it says to do. But still relayed.

If you verify with a port checker that your port is open, I would just wait. Mine went off relayed, then back on for a few days, then back off finally. The HNT network is experiencing growing pains right now. Best of luck!

I think you need a more scientific approach. Sounds like your biggest draw and reduced witnessing is from the gain loss through such a long antenna cable. I would love to see a direct comparison of your 3dbi vs 5.8dbi once you get your outdoor enclosure up and running and you've taken out the antenna cable as a variable. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I've had my mntd black online for approximately 4 days, setup port forwarding on 44158 last night but still being "relayed". How long did you have to wait before that corrected itself?

Verify that your port is actually open on your public ip with a site like this one: portchecker.co/ If it is definitely OPEN, then just wait. The Helium network has been SOOOO slow, buggy, and even come to a standstill lately. They are onboarding so many new hotspots they are having growing pains. My relayed message was on and off for the better part of a week. If the port is open, the relayed status should go away eventually. Best of luck!

It appears your antenna is in the trees. If so the leafs might be affecting your efficiency. Try to have it out in the open as much as possible. I’m trying to get a miner but it seems like pulling teeth at the moment.

LMR400 is a really lossy cable...connectors will add loss to the cable as well...Dunno what you want to spend on cable, but I would research to see what you can do to reduce loss...

No offense to you but the point of the updated video words to show your probability with the bobcat miner with the new antenna not a new miner with the upgraded antenna different miners will have different results.

You cable is too long and you lose a lot of dbi. So your antenna in the end is not that powerfull at all. If you wana keep the 30feet cable get at least 4 dbi or 5.8 dbi antenna :)

Yeah I talk about that in the video. My current antenna is 5.8dbi. I am going to greatly reduce the cable length AND drop the antenna gain.

So for every 3 foot of cable you are losing 0.3 dB. That's a loss of around 3 dB total, negating the benefits of your antenna. Reduce the length of the cable and you're golden.

Yeah I realized that pretty quick after I got it setup. I'm going to install the hotspot in an outdoor enclosure with a very minimal run of LMR cable (1-5ft probably).

I'm not teaching my community, I'm making a video on my progress as I learn. I am a newbie with a lot of this stuff. I am learning in public. This hotspot is making me about .4-.6 HNT a day now, which I think it decent, but I would love to improve it. Instead of telling me I'm doing a bad job, how about offering thoughts on a solution? Creating is hard. Criticism is easy.
