After 4 months living in South Korea, I made this video to show you what an average day in Seoul is like for my boyfriend and I as foreigners: What we do and how much we spend. I'll take you along with us on our meals, through Seoul's public transportation system, to our Coworking Office, and our gym. You'll even get to meet some of our Korean friends :) After watching, you can decide for yourself if Korea is an expensive place or not!

I need correction) when you ride in public transportation, you tap card on the machine, it’s not for government to collect your data. It‘s to transfer between other transportation. For example, once you ride out subway, then to get in bus, just tap that card. So you can save bus fee. (can get in without paying bus fee.) When you hear 환승입니다. It means local city office paid your bus fee on behalf of you. Of course, government collect some data, but it’s not to intrude your privacy, just for collect information to make better road status. Here’s not China. Welcome to Korea and enjoy. 😊

Exactly yeah, it's the same in the Washington D.C subway as well, you tap your card twice both on the way in and out of the station. You only get charged when you exit the station. It's both for connecting with other transportation and to make sure that you actually rode the train. That's cool cause in case you decide to go back without riding the train after tapping the card you won't be charged!

The person sitting next to you on the subway got up and left, not because he didn't want to be involved with your group. If she gets up and gives up her seat, you can all sit in one place It's very likely that he was considerate. I usually do that, too. Maybe other Koreans will do the same.

You can order half and half at most chicken restaurants. In Korea, it is common for two people to order one chicken. Some places have small portions, but I recommend ordering just one. And most restaurants take out leftover food.

Yes. It is true. Even I(I am fat and tall guy) order just one chicken when I eat chicken with my 1 or 2 friends. So, 1~2 people = 1 chicken is enough.

The reason for tapping the card twice is both due to varying subway fares based on distance and for calculating fares during transfers. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to use the restroom while taking the subway and the restroom is located outside the fare gates, you can tap your card to exit and then tap it again upon reentry without incurring additional charges. However, you must complete this within 10 minutes, which will soon be extended to 15 minutes. Additionally, when transferring from the subway to a bus, the fare is still based on the distance from the initial subway station where you tapped your card to the bus stop where you transfer. This means that there's no separate payment required when boarding the bus. You simply tap your card when boarding the bus, and then tap it again when you get off at your final destination, where you'll be charged a small additional fee based on the distance traveled. This transfer system is limited to Seoul and its surrounding cities and aims to provide an integrated public transportation fare system where fares are proportional to the distance traveled, regardless of the mode of transportation used. 챗gpt의 도움을 좀 받아봤습니다 :)

In buses, different colored seats mean different use of seats. Yellow ones are for elders and disabled. Pink ones for pregnant women and etc. Green/blue for everybody. Not strict compared to subways, though, as the number of bus seats is limited. You can regard it a sort of guidance

This is 100% correct. I would like to add, for long distance/express buses (excluding the ones you need tickets for) the first few rows of sits have small stickers on the wall indicating that they are for the elderly and disabled. A lot of people ignore them when there aren't other sits available though

8:46 it’s also for discount. When you transfer to the next transportation within 30 mins, you get big discounts. This applies when you use bus systems as well so you should also tap when you get off the bus to be able to get the discount. It’s helpful for the situation when you took a wrong bus but you already paid or you passed the destination stop.

because many people work in the central of the seoul. but many of them are live outside central of seoul . so they spend many times and paid over 100$ for just go to work. so this transfer system is for normal citizens. When you ask for something you add juseyo 주세요 to the end to mean please. Also prob not a good idea to play in random trash. If the place is old the pipes may not be able to handle toilet tissue and in that case the used tissue will be thrown in a little trash can near the toilet instead. And just a tip, try order half and half chicken next time for smaller portions but the best of both worlds. Haha. Now to continue the video 😊.

8:24 The reason why you have to tap twice when you in and out of the gate is that the government's metro agency can track your course of journey and calculate the traffic charges. Therefore there is a transferring system allowing you to spend minimum travel cost by the distance of your journey rather than pay twice for your journey.

Considering you've only been here for 4 months, you know a lot of things. Here are a few things to know. When using public transportation, swiping your card again when getting off is not because the government collects information, but because fares are applied differently depending on the distance. It is also necessary for free transfer. If it is a credit card, there will be a record of my use, but this is only a record of use and has nothing to do with the government. If you recharge it on a transportation card purchased at a convenience store, you will not be able to know who used it. The letters written next to the convenience store are simply their slogan and have no meaning, so just remember the name of the convenience store. Convenience store kimbap is so tasteless that even Koreans don't buy it. As for Naengmyeon, in my experience, foreigners feel repulsed when it is called cold noodle, but when it is called cold noodle salad, they enjoy it. If you order the chicken the way shown in the video, it's too much for two people to eat. No matter which chicken restaurant you go to, if you order the half-and-half menu, you can eat half the amount and at half the price. This is an article using a translator from Korean to English.

The korean government is dropping the ball for not collecting this information especially since they are already doing the scans twice. If they did, they could probably use such information to get a better idea of how to improve infrastructure throughout the country. I can understand how some people would be suspicious of data collection like this but it would be a mistake to overlook how useful it could be at the same time.

When you transfer from the subway to buses, they don't charge you more. All transportations are linked, the fare you have to pay is according to the distance you travel. You have to tap out of the subway so that you can tap into other method of transportation. If you are a public transportation card holder regardless of how many trasfers you make you pay the fair by the distance.

In korea, brick housing exterior was a big trend back in 1970s-1980s. That's why most brick buildings look dated:) typical old houses built in 50years ago. (+ most light grayish stone exterior houses are built in 1990s-early 2000s)

There are so many foreigners who want to live in Korea for 2-3 months, and your channel was one of the most interesting Korean Vlogs I've ever seen and you're definitely talented. If you live in Korea and produce a variety of videos, you'll definitely be very famous as a RU-vidr

16:24 Another tip!! When it's hard to find the card like in the video, when one person gets on the bus, say "Two people." The driver sets the price for two people. When you're done, just put your card on the terminal and you're done!! ( Next time I change it and pay for two people when I get on the bus, it's fair, right? 😄 )

Subway system in Seoul is huge that it doesn't make sense to charge flat rate. And, Korean subway has yet to implement flat rate weekly or monthly ticket. In old days, passenger bought different ticket for different destination depending on distance. So if you travel from Suwon to Ilsan, you pay higher fare. Now it's done automatically by tapping in (record departing station) and tapping out (calculating fare and deduct fare from balance). It also record time of leaving subway so that you can get discount to take bus. Korean government implemented concept of total fare of travel regardless of transportation type. Either you take bus or subway, total fare should be identical in this concept. And you can transfer to other transportation in the middle and tapping out is critical for that matter.
@bsjdnsk
@bsjdnsk 8 месяцев назад
Commuter passes exist, but they may be a bit complicated for foreigners to use. There is only one card, but when charging, you must carefully check the usage instructions, such as Seoul use only and fares by distance. The Seoul-only ticket is limited to 30 days and can be used 60 times for 55,000 won.
@jinsookim223
@jinsookim223 8 месяцев назад
@@bsjdnsk ah ok. but still not really flat rate. 60 times within 30 days is like bulk purchase discount. Where I stay, regardless of travel distance (it can be as far as 30 miles one way but you can take 20 times if you want), $3.75 per day. Seoul only ticket (low fare anyway) and up to 30 days. So, ticketing machine really need to check departing station and existing station to check fare.
