I often get the question, “How much does it cost to have a baby in the first year”. You asked and I will do my best to answer how much one of MY babies cost me in their first year of life. There is literally no way to have a single answer that applies to everyone, so I am just speaking from my experience. I will go over the cost to deliver a baby in the US, the cost of daycare, how much baby formula and food costs and ill be throwing in some baby tips and fun facts along the way.

Yes, but your taxes are much higher compared to USA. I have the best private health insurance here, and it cost me $0 for childbirth as well, and if I have to pay copays, it’s a fixed $15. Most Americans get insurance through their jobs, which pay for their workers insurances, which is zilch out of pocket.

Julie M I don’t know where you’re getting your info from but most people in the US have to pay for their own insurance. I only know of a handful of people who have their employer completely cover their insurance for them. I work in HR and most people pay anywhere from $300-$800 a month for insurance.

@Jenn_Vaughan
@Jenn_Vaughan 3 года назад
Just to clarify for everyone else's visibility - medical care and maternity care in Canada is not Free. Yes, you do not get a bill in the mail every time you go see a doctor or go to the hospital - but EVERY SINGLE TAX PAYER pays an enormous amount of their taxes towards this "free" system - and in fact more then 50% of collected taxes goes to healthcare. So, you are paying for these benefits, as is everyone else, since the day you decided to work until you die - it just happens to be spaced out and pooled so it doesn't impact your decision to receive care when you need it.

@@kaylarose9012 Exactly. Its a trade off. Really what it boils down to is the US government being controlled by large companies and the general American public not trusting its own government. My vaginal delivery was $5k (after insurance) 🙃 and I still have some bills coming as I delivered recently. Healthcare in the US is a joke. We claim to care about good old fashioned family values yet we still don’t have any paid maternity or paternity leave and new moms can walk out of the hospital in debt just for delivering a baby. It’s a system that adds to the cyclical problem of young, single moms having no support and then not being able to help their children avoid the same fate.

It blows my mind how much this varies. My daughter turned 1 in May and we spent probably about $1000 for the entire year. If you’re a SAHM, breastfeed for the whole first year, buy used clothes and deal hunt it can be cheap. Obviously I know this isn’t an option for everyone but for people watching this freaking out it isn’t always this much. My delivery was free thankfully since my husband is in the military.
@jbean9657
@jbean9657 4 года назад
Right. I was thinking this. Consignment. Little baby clothes and toys almost or really brand new for 50-90% off.... you just have to start looking early. Buy diapers when they are on sale. Breast feed if able. Pump free with insurance... don't pick the most expensive of something you'll use 3 months to a year, etc. You dont actually NEED most of what Americans are lead to believe. Staying home isn't an option for me so daycare is horrific, but otherwise, I'm not spending this much on TWINS.

I had my daughter in Switzerland. Everything was free for me. I stayed in the hospital for 7 days. I'm from the US and none of my family couldnt make it to Switzerland. My husband didnt get any time off of work to help me. Since this was the case they kept me until they could find an agency to help me cook, clean, and grocery shop. The person that did this for me was free. I also got a midwife that came out to my house once a week after I came home for free. The midwife came for 6 months. After the 6 months once a week I went to a clinic that checked my daughter's weight and height. This is free for the first 5 years. I'm seriously thinking about having my 2nd child in Switzerland. The only downside is itll be difficult to get my child their US citizenship. It took me 9 months to get my daughter's citizenship. *Edit the a lot of hospitals in Switzerland does not have private rooms. In my 7 day stay 5.5 days I had no roommate. I say 5.5 because a person came in my room for only 1/2 a day. We didn't get along. She was Italian and had her Italian family there. They were extremely loud and didn't think that there was another person in the room.

Here in St Lucia, once you’re working. The national insurance pays for your hospital stay. Also you get 6 wks before your expected delivery date and 6 weeks after. They pay 65% of your salary for that period. You also get a maternity grant which is I believe $600.00. Also you don’t get anything from the hospital. You need to purchase all your items.

In the Netherlands delivery is free, most are at home births though. You can go to the hospital which costs €260 if not medically necessary (sometimes insurance will pick up the bill). We get 16 weeks maternity leave and fathers/partners get 6 weeks, all paid. Postpartum is also taken care of; a specially trained nurse comes over in the first week postpartum and helps out the new family with breastfeeding, light housework and checks up on mom. She also teaches you how the practical things around your baby work.

Honestly, people buy a lot of unnecessary things or buy things for the simple fact of “its cute”. I watch a lot of minimalist youtube moms & I realized a lot of things weren’t need. Items like Wipes Warmers & Baby shoes- sounds nice but not needed. People buy changing tables but it’s so much cheaper to just put down a mat on the bed or couch & change them. If baby showers are something that people do, requesting things like diapers & clothes of various sizes cuts into the costs too.
@jessicaely2521

27 weeks pregnant here in Boston. Our 'discounted'' daycare cost through work is $2575/month... I have colleagues with 3 kids in daycare who make good money but still use 100% of one spouse's income for the year just on daycare. And I've recently realized, I'm due in October and a colleague of mine is due 2 months earlier in August. She will save about $20k in daycare costs over us because her kid is just before the school year cutoff. It's just insane. My husband and I are so very lucky we can choose to have kids knowing we can afford it. I have friends with 1 kid who want a 2nd but don't because they can't afford the daycare expense.

I saw a maternal fetal medicine doc from week 11 on and the last 8 weeks or so I had ultrasounds and a non-stress test weekly on top of my normal OB appointments. I also had to have a couple of iron infusions for anemia. I live in Oklahoma, and my health insurance covers maternity services at 100%. Didn’t pay a dime more than my premium. My part of that runs about $250/ month.

I am from Austria 🇦🇹 (Europe) and have two kids, these are roughly the benefits you get from the government : - pregnancy is free (ultrasounds ect.) - delivery in a hospital is free (including c-sections ect.) - 2 monthly maternity leave before birth (paid) - you can choose different maternity leave models but a common one ist staying at home for a year and get around 1000€ per month or around 80% of your last income (up to 2000 € top) - and you get around 144€ for the first child per month additionally till it is 24 years old als "family support", but with more kids you get a bit less per child It varies, depending what model you choose, number of children ect, but I think it is pretty good. But although you have all these benefits, we still have declining birth rates 🤷

Wow this is a big eye opener on how other countries are. I’m in Australia and my employer gives me 20 weeks full pay maternity leave then our government gives 18 weeks maternity leave, which is around half my usual pay from work. All Ultrasounds and birth was free for me through the public system, and nappies/diapers are around $30 for 100 pack which last about 2 weeks and the wipes I get are $10 for 480 wipes which last about 6 weeks for us. 1 tin of Formula last about 2 weeks and the one we get is $15, I half breastfeed and half formula bottle feed. The big expenses for me were $600 crib, $500 chest of drawers with change table on top and a $500 car seat. When she starts childcare at 9 months when I return to work, that is also another big expense. Here it’s about $130 a day but the government pays about half of that. I also received a lot of second hand clothes after I already bought tons of clothes, silly me 😂 *All prices are in AUD For me, so far having a baby hasn’t been as expensive or hard as I thought it would be, thank god!

Luckily, I have insurance to shoulder all the medical costs that deal with this pregnancy (prenatal care, laboratory, delivery etc.) If you have no OHIP or insurance: a vaginal birth costs around $8,000 CAD, while a c-section birth would cost around $12,000 CAD

My hospital doesn't provide diapers, wipes, or pads for mama. Forget about anything in between.

My sister gave birth in Malaysia, it cost her RM50 (11 USD) for delivery in public government hospital. I'm expecting a baby in 4 weeks and have paid ~$4,200 deposit to my Ob office for delivery. Not yet calculating on hospital cost 😱 One daycare I looked at cost $1,680/month for infant to 3-year-old. Again, in CT.

I live in Lithuania (Europe), today I’ll have my first appointment, by law all medical care for pregnant women should be free, but I spoiled myself :D with half privat health care for a little better service and for each appointment I’ll pay about 25€. Delivery will be free, execept if I’ll ask for separate room, this should cost abou 20€/day :D also we can chose 12 months child care holidays with 80% salary compensation, or 24 months child care holidays with first year - 70 % salary compensation and second year - 40% compesation. Also my husband will have one month fully compesated dad holidays to help at first month of the baby.

I live in Australia. We have two options here. Public or private. If you go public it’s completely free including your appointments while you’re pregnant. If you go private and you have private health insurance it can still be in the thousands plus the cost of your insurance which is not included in employment, it’s out of pocket for the individual. There’s so much to consider though. If you go public you’re usually only in hospital for a day if you have a normal vaginal delivery. If you go private you can stay a lot longer.

I am currently 36 weeks pregnant. I had health insurance with my job then looked into Medicaid. Been on Medicaid since finding out I was pregnant I haven’t paid for anything. Baby also is covered by Medicaid so once he is here he will have my same insurance through Medicaid. Thankfully my job gives me 12 weeks leave but not paid of course.. just thankful my insurance is the way it is..

In the US, I think it depends on your insurance more than where you live? I live in Philadelphia and did not pay a penny for any of my midwife maternity care visits or for my delivery - the only cost I had to pay was a $20 copay to have a postpartum medical treatment (only pushed for 4 minutes and then had 3rd degree tearing :( )

I never used the hands free ones myself. They are fairly new and we’re not covered by my insurance when I have my babies. It def sounds like a dream come true tho if they work!! I'm in Ontario, Canada... I haven't had children yet (going through fertility treatments), but delivery and OB appointments and all of that will cost me $0. The fertility treatments, though, are $$$. We're also entitled to Maternity/Pregnancy leave of up to 15 weeks, and can get paid benefits of up to 55% of our income. And afterwards we are entitled to Parental Leave, which can be 40 weeks with 35 weeks paid at 55%, OR up to 69 weeks with 61 weeks paid at 33%. And some employers will top up your pay for a little while, as well, which is nice.

In Poland it is free for monthly visits during pregnancy and two scans and for delivery in the hospital, the national health service is not the best, it is not easy to get an appointment and usually there is a long waiting line but at least thats free. I had a csection and spent 9 days at the hospital got free diapers and stuff. If you work full time u get 1 year maternity leave paid 80% of your income. I am self employed and get only small amount from the national insurance so I have to come back to work qiucker but comparing to US I cannot complain ☺️

I've decided to use cloth diapers as well as cloth wipes because I already have everything I'll ever need for my children and I've only spent $200. Then when it comes to medical I'm lucky at the moment my out-of-pocket is only $600 and I have no deductible which is great. I am moving soon though so I don't know what it'll be when I move cuz I'm going to a completely different state so I guess I'll have to look and see if I can find something as good.

No insurance, giving birth in a birth center. Its $7000 out the door plus blood work ,which for us, was less since our account was marked as paying out of pocket. All blood work came to about $350. There is an extra charge for laughing gas if u try and find it works for u. We normally see the chiropractor once a month which is $60, but for me became weekly at about 34 weeks. Tip, go to Costco for vaccines, they are so much cheaper the CVS and Walgreen's. The TDAP at Walgreen's is $108, at Costco its $45.99. And I've had 1 prenatal massage to try and readjust my baby, $155. That a all the BIRTHING expenses I can think of. Oh and this is in the Monterey, CA area so I know it may be cheaper in other areas.

I hit my deductible also for my son. $3800. This is for a hospital delivery and midwife care in PA outside a major city, I had a c-section birth. Pretty sure I had almost hit my deductible before I even got to the birth. It would've been over $20K just for delivery, I saw what they charged my insurance!
