How Much Meat To Eat on Carnivore Diet
Have you ever wondered how meat to eat on carnivore, hyper carnivore, ketovore or animal based diet? If you are looking for a carnivore diet meal plan for beginners, there is a lot of information out there, but it can still be confusing at times. How much meat start off with? How much do you buy? What meats should I focus on? Does it change over time? In today’s video, Kevin will walk you through how. he initially transitioned from keto to carnivore, how much he determined to start eating each day, and how he turned his daily protein requirements that translated into a grocery list.
Starting Ratio
As a general guideline, a good starting ratio is 1g protein per 1lb of desired body weight. For example, if you weigh 170 lbs and want to weigh 150 lbs, then aim for 150g of protein. This can be adjusted upward if you are looking to gain muscle mass.
When figuring out how much meat to buy on the carnivore diet, in general, remember that 1lb of meat = 16 oz = 453 grams. For every 1 lb of meat, it is approximately 100g of protein. Multiply the weight in raw pounds of meat you are eating by x100 to come up with a quick estimate of the protein you’re eating as well. Obviously this can skew depending on the fattiness of the meat you are buying, but we’ve noticed on our diet so far and looking at the macros of the types of meats we’ve been eating over time it has tended to average out this way.
Alternatively, you could track everything you eat in one of those apps, but who wants to do that. This doesn’t need to be an exact science. I never wanted to spend the time tracking everything I eat, although that can’t help some people, it takes way too much mental energy that can be used elsewhere, and I don’t think people have fun doing that.

You can use your BMR as a guide for an estimate of the total amount of calories you need, however in the long term and due to any nutritional deficiencies, you may have, or the energy expenditure from the exercise you do, you should just eat until your full and use the BMR calculator as an estimate to only determine initial volumes of food you require on this diet

150lb , 5’7” Person, Exercise 1-3 times/week
Economic Meal Plan
- 1.5 lbs of 80/20 ground beef (raw)
- 114g Protein, 132g fat, 1680 calories
- 3oz (3 slices) of Cheddar Cheese, 20g Protein, 28g fat, 345 calories
- 4 slices bacon, 16g Protein, 16g fat, 215 calories
Total: 150g Protein, 176g fat, 2240 Calories
Expensive Meal Plan
- 2lbs Rib Eye (raw)
- 168g Protein, 128g fat, 1840 calories
- 4tbsp Butter, 48 g fat, 408 calories
Total: 168g Protein, 176g fat, 2288 calories

I started carnivore first of the year but actually didn’t know what I was doing. Been on Paleo, AIP, past 10 years with some good results…but wanted an easier diet & a diet that was less complicated., with better results. Watching other videos by carnivores left me somewhat confused. Am I eating enough? Too much? I basically eat Ribeye, eggs, bacon & butter. I throw in a recipe for great tortillas, carnivore, once a week for shrimp tacos as a “treat”. Watching your video made everything so clear, thank you so much. Great information ❤

Very clear concise presentation. I've been carnivore for ten years and there was not much in the way of guidance out there back then. Had to fuddle through on my own. Regarding how much food to eat. It think it changes over time in any one person too. Multiple decades of a nutrient poor diet can leave a person with deficiencies. When I first started carnivore, I was packing away two pounds of meat a day. Now it is more like one pound. I think the body sometimes needs to "restock the shelves" of nutrients, do some repair work, strengthen your bones and those sorts of things first.

I originally started carnivore about 2 months ago after my doctor told me I was borderline type 2 diabetic. I did have weight to loose but it wasn't a factor in my decision. A byproduct of the diet however, was indeed, weight loss which makes sense. I had been unsuccessfully trying for years to lose about 12 lbs to get to down to my goal weight. In about 4 weeks on carnivore I had lost the weight and have remained fairly stable since. General joint pain has lessened significantly and I do seem to have more energy and less brain fog as well. I haven't had a follow-up blood test yet but I'm assuming I'm no longer borderline T2. Everything I read or watched on carnivore simply makes sense to me and I also like the simplicity of it not being very handy in the kitchen. It agrees with me.

As much as you want! Also lots of fat. My favorite hack to stop a sugar binge. Cut a hunk of cold butter and munch. By the time I’m finished the binge is gone before it ever happened!! I’ve been a sugar/carb binge-er my whole life. Being able to stop one before I have consumed hundreds of calories of junk is so freeing!

I started world Carnivore month on the first. I lost about five pounds pretty quickly, but quickly plateaued. Not sure what’s going on, but I feel better, and I’m going to stick with the program for the whole month no matter what. My only hypothesis is that I should increase my protein and bring fat down a little. I dunno. We will see.

Congrats on the 5 lb weight loss, that's already great progress! Keep tweaking the protein/fat ratios and see what works for you. We recommend intermittent fasting if you're not already doing so, it really helps expedite fat loss.

Thank you Kevin, I appreciate the info you have provided on how much to eat per day, I started my Carnivore diet journey Sept 01/23 and up to now a month later I have lost 25lb. I am a little discouraged because I thought i would have lost more weight by now, but on the other hand I do feel much better physically and mentally. I think the issue i am having is not so much how much food to eat but how much fat / protein to eat? I have watched other videos and was told I need to eat 63% fat each day??? it seems way to excessive. Do you have any advise on this topic?

How do you guys manage your food intake if you work? Like I eat at 9 pm (newly started) untill I think I'm full. I don't know yet when I'm fully full for the moment :p but like today I went to work and at 10 am I felt a little hungry. Yesterday I didnt' feel hungry the whole day and I also ate at 9 pm thr fay before. So, how do you guys arrange food for work in case you would be hungry sooner then expected? Thanks

I’m really leaning toward carnivore but have transitioned to keto in the interim. I’m now doing keto with only avocado, some salad, raw sauerkraut and kimchi and some nuts and nut butter as my non meat items. I’m feeling better and better. I’ll likely end up carnivore in the near future. Also supplementing with liver pills as I don’t care for it too much yet.

That's a very similar diet to what Alice does :) whereas Kevin is the more strict one. If you're interested in becoming more carnivore we'd recommend incorporating more meat at your own comfort level. We do think experimenting between keto/ketovore/carnivore to see what your body responds to best is a key part of this journey.

I'm going to start this soon with 18-6 fast. I'm thinking 3 eggs with cheese for meal 1 fried in butter, meal 2 most likely salmon fillet or chicken wings 4, or beef mince 125g fried in butter with 2 turkey slices. Im not sure about calories but hoping to stay within 1000cal, probably do 20min exercise a day.

On carnivore, you should be able to eat way more calories than that, and still lose weight. This is the most calories I've ever consumed (1800-2200!!!) And still losing weight.

What if I’m less than the recommended amount of protein based on a 1:1 ratio in terms of losing fat, will I still be able to maintain that or is it strict 1:1? For my roommate he would need to consume 200 grams of protein and there’s no way right now we can afford together to be eating such and amount of meat per day

Im doing strict carnivore now for 10months for my awful health issues but ive been only eating beef so i know this is not optimal long term right? I also did some tests and my cholesterol,urea and ferritin levels are soooo elevated I didnt add other animal foods cause where i live the sea is so polluted(persian gulf) also no corn soy free polutry but after the bloodwork i’d done i thought i should add animal foods lower in satured fat and iron? do you think with this situation is better to stick to only beef or still add in seafoods or leaner polutry? Is it one gram of protein per pound or one gram of cooked protein per pound of weight. Asking cuz I read its not the same as raw protein opposed to cooked protein. Would appreciate the feedback

1 pound of beef is never 100 grams of protein. the most it can be is 16x6=96 grams if it had zero fat which it never does

Im 163 pounds in weight, so 163 gr of meat or 200gr seems very little per day. Is it per meal rather?

Hi Frances, we meant in the video that for around 163 pound ideal weight it would be around 163 grams of protein. That would be between 1.5 - 2 lbs of meats depending on the cut. Hope this helps!

Let’s assume that you’re eating a 1 year old cow. After slaughter about about 500 pounds of edible meat. So if you eat two pounds per days that’s 730 pounds of meat per year. Or 1 1/2 cows per year. Now that’s per person. In order for that cow to reach to you it has consumed 25 pounds of dry food per day on average for 365 days x 25=9125 pounds per cow so if you’re eating 1 1/2 cows per year that’s approximately 15000 pounds of dry feed. Now dry feed is usually corn grain or dry hay. Now a cow drinks approximately 10 gallons of water per day so in a year that’s 3650 gallons of water. So you’re eating 1 1/2 cows so that’s about 5500 gallons of water. So in addition to your 730 pounds of beef you eat per year you also have consumed 15 thousand pounds of dry produce and 5500 gallons of water before you even ate. Now a bale of round hay that you see in a hayfield weighs about 700 pounds so that’s like 20 bails of hay you’ve eaten per year . So an average bathtub holds about 60 gallons of water So you’ve already drank the equivalent of almost 100 bathtubs full of water. The number of round bales per acre is about 10 so you already need a two plot to sustain your diet. Now do the math on everyone on the play. Not enough planet

On the carnivore diet I only have to eat small amount and I do not ever get hungry. I ate two meals today, a medium sized ribeye and 3 sausage. Meat is much more satiating than I expected.

Based on this guy's formula, I would need to eat approximately 1.5 - 2 lbs of meat per day to achieve my weight goal. Honestly, I have a good appetite, but I'm not sure I can down almost 2 lbs of meat in a single meal, being that I mostly do OMAD for IF purposes. I think there are some variables here that need to be taken into consideration.

I agree, it’s difficult for me to eat that much doing OMAD as well. The guide is just an initial estimate for starting out, however I would just eat until you are full. If I’m trying to get more protein in I stretch my eating window to about 3-4 hours. If you’ve been doing OMAD and seen good results from it I would continue doing what you’re currently doing 🙂

As said. Open your eating window to 3 or 4 hrs. (Or less if you can) and eat a couple of small meals. If you don't eat enough at first you will get into that stubborn starvation mode and be stuck.

Hi there, chicken is ok but red meat is generally recommended as your primary source because it is more nutrient dense (and filling) than white meat. Ground beef and eggs are similar in cost to chicken and would be a great starting point!

@@AliceCeeCPA Update after i add more fats by using butter per meal(2 meals /day) abot 100 grams not so long after that I excrete to liquid every time when i add more good fats such as cheese and butter.How to i fix that maybe i will change to avocado instead.

@@Hirun15 i think you need to lower the fats in this case, see what happens. make sure you have plenty of elektrolytes like magnesium and potassium. as well as Salt. I don't know much, but it seems like you have fatty excrements due to having too much fat intake? you also mentioned that it happened due to adding more good fats so i'd dial it down a little bit.

If i eat more than 100g of fatty meat my blood sugar goes up! If i eat more than 2 meals my blood sugar goes up. I'm eating 80/20 high fat meals and still can't get blood sugar below 100! 😢 Ive tried omad, nothing changed, ive done sardine challenge with some success, I'm 2 1/2 yrs mostly carnivore and not overweight, what am i doing wrong?

In regards to price, find a good butchers. The supermarkets are overpriced by at least 3 times. What i get for £20 at the butchers would be £60 at even a cheaper supermarket.

good vid, but would be much better, if you use only the metric system, using kilograms instead of pounds. its confusing to follow what you say, because you say eat 1,5 pounds of meat and that contais 156 grams of protein. why wont you say like it is? 1,5 pounds is 680 grams of meat. its better to stick in a one system. metric or pounds, not throw different measuring systems together. take care, and happy dieting.

@@AliceCeeCPA Thank you, and good diets. I just started carnivore also. I used to be on Keto, but i didnt achieve those health benefits i was after. Now i go all in, and the carnivore is ultimate Keto of course. And boy, im realy sick and sore right now. Just like in first weeks of Keto, but little worse. But i know this Will pass. Its really strange how the body reacts when swithching the main fuel source from carbohydtates to fats and protein. Kinda facinating i would say! But i know im on the right path, so im going to stay on it( this time). 😄. Take care, and good continuing of summer.

judging from the example he said for when someone is 5'7 150 lb goal - 1,5 LB of steak which is 0,68 kg or 680 grams a day But i have to admit, it doesn't make much sense to me either.. cuz the total calories in 680 grams of Ribeye are 1156 kcal I guess, just eat as much meat till you're satisfied? just use what i just said as an approximate number, i'm just starting myself.. so i plan on going for 2 lb of meat which is 0,90 kg or 900 grams of meat and adding onto that if needed, i also heard you need a lot of salt, magnesium and potassium but only slowly add these things if you get cramps or feel fatigued. But don't take my word for it, i'm a simple doofus, who doesn't really understand either.

Something strange here. 60g of protein is the medical answer as to personal daily requirement of protein, a figure which is suitable for 97.5% of the adult population. That figure is a ceiling btw. So, at 0.8g of protein (1g) per kilo body weight, as the recommended average...a 175 lb guy should eat 63g of protein per day. Working it back based on lean beef at 26-30g of protein per kg .. That's 250-300g of lean beef per day. It is possible to overload on protein in the one"s diet with serious and irreparable effects on the organs, particularly the kidneys.

I am supposed to eat 110 lbs of meat. I am having a big problem eating that much. I feel I am eating all day. 3 meals of 40 grams of protein is nearly impossible. I keep getting sick to my stomach, I have headaches and ai lay awake most of the night this can't be right,

Carnivore is defined as mostly eating meat, but some of you only eat meat. So, would I have to never eat Pizza or hamburger rolls? I mostly eat meat, I am maintaining my current weight, not gaining more thankfully, but I just can't give up Soda and the occassional desert with milk, or the occassional pizza. Eating only one type of food, you eventually get sick of it, even if it's your favorite food, and then get strong cravings for something you haven't had in a while. You can lose weight, but it all comes back.

Do it without the pizza and rolls for 30 days and then eat a pizza and your body will show you that you do not really like it, you are simply addicted to it and when you get it out of you and eat meat you wont even want to eat the pizza, but if you do eat a pizza it is fine, but try to only do it once a month if you really want one. Pizzas are insanely unhealthy though

im sorry but your required fat calculation is way off, this is calculated on lean body mass and not total mass, fat do not need protein so why would you add this to your calculation. So a 300 lbs man would have to eat 3 lbs of meat? heck no.
