How Much Money I Make In Plastering | TRUTH...The Good , Bad And Ugly

Today, we’re talking about money. I’m going to reveal how much money I make in plastering.
This is a big one because I’ve never done this before so this is a first. I’m going to talk about averages…how much I make in a day, my meterage rate and explain how much I made from my last 2 RU-vid video’s.
But before we start, I want to make it clear that this isn’t a guide. Every area is different and everyone needs to find their own rates that work for them. So don’t copy my results because it might not work for you.
But I'll give an idea on how much money can be made as a plasterer.
And feel free to share...leave your comments and let us know what you think. Is this a fair price or not to you??
If you like this video then please like and subscribe. For more advice and guides on plastering you can also visit our website from the link below:

Plastering is hard, dirty physical work. It damages your joints, skin and lungs. A lot of the people who moan about the price of hiring tradesmen work in a nice warm office and live a decade longer for doing a far easier job.

Don’t see too many plasters leaving the trade because of those reasons, so money must easy out weigh the bad

@@lufcEngland7 come and try it, the ones that leave do so way before they make it. It’s a hard life, I’ve had multiple tendinitis, muscle strains etc, and nearly every day is hard work 28 years in now, every day is a challenge, but mastering a skill takes discipline, and providing a worthwhile service for others is rewarding, every penny I get I earn fair and square I know that

@@MrPistolpete1234 fair point mate but you’re essentially saying same thing, you have injuries but still stay in the industry because the money out weighs the injury. I’m not saying tradesmen don’t deserve a good salary I’m saying money clearly out weighs the down sides and then some

@@lufcEngland7 when your walking through sloppy mud on a dark January morning, to go into a new build with no heating and throw on about 70sq metres of skimming every day, then of course the money has to play its part. But you have to work exceptionally hard yourself to get to that standard. And once you’re there, you must maintain it every day, or the money won’t be there. Hi Blaine, thanks for providing these video's, they're all very informative, and you're evidently quality at what you do, so respect! I am relatively new to plastering, I have done odd jobs here and there, walls, ceilings, reveals etc, from new builds boarding to plastering to painting, to bonding out/replastering existing walls... I also live in Hastings, and would love one day to observe your work/technique first hand, so if you ever need a labourer for free, a day here and there, hopefully that can be arranged so I can progress further in this trade confidently. Would be good to have a chat as you seem like a nice guy overall also, all the best!

Great video buddy , the amount of money that can be lost going around looking at jobs and pricing jobs is the worst part of being self employed. The prices you charge are bang on in my area too. I take my hat off to you for talking about it as all other tades think its a big secret thinking that someone is going to go and under cut them. It all comes down to knowing what your worth. I've had customers come to me say someone else is cheaper then me and I say that fine thank you for contacting me if you need anything else in the future you have my number. 9/10 of them would rather pay my rate then save the small amount and possible have to have it done again. Keep up the great work buddy.

I’m glad Iv followed you as I have done most of my house now typically getting better room to room, first room I did I couldn’t move for 2 days afterwards, every muscle in my body. If I didn’t have the ox speed skim it might have been a different story rather that flatten trowelling and levelling so thank you for all your videos. For me personally it was to do my own home and not professionally. I feel I just wanted a professional to look over my shoulder to observe but now if a friend or family ever wanted a room I would probably have more confidence to do it. Your rates are good and you are a fantastic professional that has a passion for detail not like the cowboys in Hastings that just clearly take the piss and don’t care if it cracks and looks like some of the roads in St Leonard’s. Great video on self employment Blaine 👍 If you ever need help in this area or any other area of self employment the group is there to help & is focussing around this subject. Your bang on with all your points & examples the only thing I would add is that you mentioned that your time spent doing off the tools business tasks ie visitations, emails, pricing up, picking up materials this time ultimately has to be factored into your daily, weekly, monthly earnings so that you are not only earning when your behind the trowel Also there might be a time when you decide to employ a member of staff in your business or you may have runs of prep! In which case working on either day rate or meter may not be feasible & a fixed price would be better

My father is seeing a huge downturn in demand for his plastering. He used to have a regular deal with a company that installs summer houses, but they have gone with taping and jointing over plastering as they say it is cheaper and faster as they can decorate so much quicker. He said he spoke with other plasterers and they are seeing a huge downturn on new build work as well. My father does have a ot of rendering work lined up though, so he is hoping for some great weather this year.

Good breakdown mate , always wondered what the lads are earning now back home. Mainly do dry lining /gib stopping now where all nee works on meters and lineal breakdowns. Your average 3 bed 170sqm house be around 5k which you'd like to get done it a week bigger ones 6 7k and you're looking at a week and a half. Skimming over here is versa different but I usually charge around 700-750+gst for bog standsrd bedroom. And everything hard to price we negotiate an hourly charge up rate @ 60-65ph But you make the best hourly rate when you work it out on the big spec houses nice easy sqaure rooms where I can run all the toys 🤑

I do kitchens, bathrooms, bricklaying etc. I'm still quoting on what my mate did all them years ago. Simple answer is: as much as You want. This applies to every trade, not happy with Your wages? Search for wealthier customers. It's crucial, You invest in advertising Your services, people start calling, BE PICKY. It's better to price 10 jobs and get 2 of them, than price first one under the reasonable cost just to get a job. That way You'll end up working every day for pennies...

Pretty gutting to hear that your day rate is about what we paid a plasterer a couple of years ago but we got a crap finish. I ended up re-doing five of his walls because it was less hassle than trying to get him back. Might re-do a sixth too as I'm doing the other walls in that room now and they look a lot better in comparison, especially around the edges. Got to put up with a lot of his North Sea looking skimming unfortunately, and that's over bloody plasterboard! Still got his knackered cement mixer that he never bothered to remove as well. I'm still very much an amateur at plastering but your videos and advice have helped me get pretty damned good results from day one.

Hi Blaine love the shows I'm a big fan. A quick question please. I've boxed in a soil pipe and have added an access hatch. The hatch is plastic. I'm going to plaster my effort. Is it a good idea to edge the access panel hole with scrim tape. The hole is straight through one sheet of board ?
@hippocrocapigable
@hippocrocapigable 2 года назад
Hi Marty. In a ideal situation your plastic hatch will have a frame with a profile rebate that is larger than the hole you have made. If this is the case no need for the scrim tape. If the plastic hatch sits within the hole without a overlap the best option would be to fit the hatch and then use a flexible caulking around the edge of the profile as this will be paintable but also have a little bit if flexibility.

I've been watching your videos for some time and I can sense your true experience. I recognise it because i've been through it all as well. Next question is how do you decide which customers to work with and which ones to avoid. . With the best intentions we sometimes meet customers that lead us into situations that cost us alot of money . Like the ones that do their own plaster boarding but are also architects for instance. They sound knowledgeable but when you turn up your shocked by the quality of plasterboarding they expect you to skim over. ? Or when someone has made their own wall with plasterboard . We skim it with 3mm of skim and they come back saying my wall is 3 inches out of plum . Obviously 3 mm of skim isn't going to fix that . How do you get around those kind of communication problems with clients.

Advertising costs and like you said down time (unpaid) looking and quoting for jobs. When you are earning you need to earn well as you need to make a profit to cover any sick days and holidays.. I’m only 19 years old and currently on £100 a day. I recently been skimming out a full (4-£600) room a day with a labourer who was learning to skim for the first time ever so I’m having to sort out his wall on top of my own work. I have been asking for £150 a day for the days I skimmed the rooms and have been told it’s what I’m supposed to do? I know I’m young and might be asking for a lot but I always leave my work perfect, sockets clean, floors scraped and sweeped left spotless. I just feel like I’m getting the piss taken out off me for £100

Alright mate, when you work on a meterage, let’s say the ceiling is 30 square metres. Does that count for the whole job or is it 30 square metres x 2 coats? Always wondered that. I know some guys in my area (Reading Berkshire) charge £12. Square metre if it’s going over old walls etc but I never know whether that was the whole job like I say or per coat. Cheers mate

Quite frankly, considering the effort and skill involved, you're a bargain! I can only imagine the cost in time plus tools and materials were I to attempt a room myself: I appreciate this isn't the same for everyone but I'd much rather lay out £300 for a day to get a job done to a professional standard than go buy everything I need and spend 3 days arsing it up! Saying that, I will be having a go (based on your videos) but I'm under no illusion: I'm doing it for fun rather than economic reasons! :-)

I live in Australia and getting a plasterer for those prices where I am would be impossible. Hell I was recently quoted more than $30 (£16) per sqm for putting up plasterboard and taping etc. Guys in your game are about $60 per sqm if you can find one. Speciality plaster is even more. I'm not saying prices over here are too high but plasterers are on the skilled worker immigration list so tbh if Australia ever opens it's borders and I was in your position I'd give it a thought.

It's very busy at the moment partly because until last week we had strict COVID related immigration restrictions. I'm not sure if it's still the case but we used to have a points system for immigration so it balanced out skill demand, age etc. Usually you are either sponsored by an employer or "self-sponsor" if you are going to be a sole trader and are on the skills-list. I think immigration would involve tedious form filling and waiting in the slow wheels of our government departments. Also, different states are in different positions both economically and from a COVID border control perspective. E.g Lots of building happening in Queensland but wages are typically a bit lower there (that may have changed in the last 12 months). Western Australia has closed it's borders to everyone.

I have been building for over 48 years my trade is bricklayer, but over the years I have all the discipline including plastering the problem with that is I am not fast as you, not that it is a competition we all work at different speeds and quality of finish. The one thing I have said many time to clients, is biulding is not like buying a car, the difference in quality of the work can vary significantly, you need money in the job to make a good job. Peace of mind when employing a builder is so important. I have been to put work right and some of it is criminal.

I phoned 6 plasters they all said they don't price per square meter. They seem to be charging what they want in the south well they are in my town. I don't work full time plastering just Saturday's I charge £22 a square meter, and they say oh is that all, I must be cheap compared to who ever they phoned before me.
