Honestly speaking, I never knew much about RAM other than the more you got, the more extreme things you can accomplish but you explained in detail what RAM exactly does which helped me alot! Don't think I'd get an explanation like that on RU-vid.
I'm using a 2018 Acer Predator Helios 300 with 16GB of RAM and 4GB of dedicated video. I use Premiere pro 6 days a week WHILE using Word and Chrome. Those are my always-open apps. Now, if by chance I have to open Photoshop or Illustrator to tweak some images that I'm using my Premiere sequence, my RAM will start to deplete. Yes, Chrome doesn't help but I do think 16GB becomes too low for me. I'm not even counting the use of After Effects. For my next computer I will defo get 32GB as a minimum. Also, some advice for fellow editors and designers: set your Premiere Pro project to CUDA or Metal and disable preview when rendering in Encoder. Thanks for the vid and the demo Ben!
OMG you have so much of Ram I am a 8gb ram user but thinking of upgrading to 16gb ram coz I am stepping into PC Editing (I used to use a 3gb ram phone to edit before btw, yea weird but this is the truth I learnt a lot of edits on mobile) So, when I start after effects I can't use Spotify, Chrome and After effects at the same time I have like 5-6 tabs open + spotify + After Effects So my ram isn't enough to handle all of that That's the reason I watched ur vid and u were straight to the point Sir Thank You!
Hi bro. how are you? I want to ask. Im using Ram 16gb to run premiere pro, ps and ae. All running smoothly. But after 10 month i use 2 monitor and my premiere playback is lagging. I don’t know if the dual monitor is the cause? Or just need to upgrade ram to 32gb?
Nice video, the majority of other videos, are comparing specs, while solely using 1 program which isn’t realistic at all! I use dual monitors, photoshop and illustrator while listening to music and browsing through information online. I’ll grab a 32gb ram setup 👌🏻
Hi, great explanation on your video! I have a prank channel which only requires little editing and basically only trimming my videos. I dont use computer much only when I edit and when I do , I use Imovie. would you recommend 8gb or 16?
You're very informative that it's easier for other people who don't know much about computer tech and specs to learn. I'm actually making a playlist on your videos on basic tech 101 so that it'll be easier for me to review them in the future.
@@BenGKaiser exaaaclty right? And i know we all want to edit our videos with no hesitation no lags just a smooth without headaches lol..i just got a 16gb of ram pc with a 1Tb Hard drive it does the job! Especially since I'm a music Producer its soo much better no more crazy CPU Usage
Bro how much Ram do I need to edit a 1 hour video with a lot of effects? Maybe I will have to edit each half and hour separately , make them into 1 file and then combine? I had 16 ram but realised it’s not enough at all, will 64 gb be ok? I have some urgency so will appreciate a reply!
all my needs are simple. all i will be doing is very minor sketching/note taking. that is,,,doing quick thumbnail ideas as notes. also cutting and pasting images and montages. there will be no finality to this work. basically it will all be quick sketching for thumnail IDEAS...this will be done with a very old "paint shop pro" program that is 20yrs old. also i will be browsing through all my resources images using "thumbs plus 5" which is an image organizer thats about 10-20yrs old. i have no heavy resource hogs on the laptop also i will not be multitasking. at the most maybe paint shop pro and thumbs plus at once either of which i can close out as needed. is 4gb ram enough?
Excellent video. What do you tell me, a macbook pro 16 core i9 + 16gb ram + 1tb ssd is enough and it runs fine with photoshop, illustrator and indesign? help me please
Damn. I'm subscribing to you. This is exactly my problem. I have always seen that number sky high as hell on my computer but never could figure out how to get it done or to improve my speed. NOW I know exactly what the problem is. Btw, do I need to upgrade my graphics card too?
i think 16 GB is enough if you don't open another program at the same time. 4K editing doesn't depend on RAM only, your CPU and especially GPU is the crucial factor when you're editing photo or video.
Just subscribe to your channel very detailed video! Love it! If you can answer my question I’ll appreciate it! I’m looking to buy a MacBook pro! For daily usage for college, web browsing and I’m planning to start my own youtube channel so i plan on editing videos and as well pictures! I was wondering what would be a good fit for me! I have 2 options! A MacBook pro 13 inch with 32gb of ram and 1tb of storage or a MacBook Pro 16 inch with only 16 gb of ram and 1tb of storage! The size to me wouldn’t matter but I would really like your opinion! Please and thankyou so much! Have a blessed day!
Damn ! This is the best explanation about RAM here on YT.. Thank you soo much! I'll be getting 32 GB of ram (hopefully I can get 3600 Mhz or higher) for my next PC rig. :D
Hi I am struggling too bad to upgrade my laptop's ram , for AN517-51-77QV ACER NITRO 5 laptop The ram I currently have reads ddr4 2666 pc4 260 pin Rank 1rx16 I can't find 1rx16 anywhere please advice me where to buy Thanks
I'm trying to decide which 13" macbook pro model (16gb or 32gb ram) to buy for mainly video and photo editing. Will I have to get 32gb ram to run a video editing software (e.g. final cut pro x) smoothly (final edited videos around 10-20min possibly in 4k) if I want to have some chrome tabs running and possibly another editing program such as photoshop or logic pro open at the same time?
Hey I need some advice PLEASE... I'm about to buy Dell XPS 7590 but I don't know whether I should choose 16GB RAM of 32 GB or 64 GB... THANKS IN ADVANCE
Thank you so much for this video! We are about to start adding video to our podcast and I'm in the process of looking for a new laptop. Im going with the new 16" MacBook Pro, but trying to decide on all the upgrades like RAM and Storage is proving more difficult than I thought. I'll mostly be using the laptop to edit videos and pictures on Final Cut Pro and Photo Shop and I will also be editing all our audio on Studio One 4. Do you have any suggestions on how much RAM and Storage is enough? Also, I dont want to deal with closing down applications when I'm working on something. Im doing that now in my studio on my iMac and I hate it. I was originally going to bite the bullet and go with 64 Ram and 8TB of storage, but after doing some research and watching your video, I was thinking it might be overkill and 32 would do? Dont want to break the bank if its not needed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the upload!!! P.S. Does it matter if you only shoot in 4k? Apologies if its a stupid question. I'm new to all this stuff.
Hey! Great questions. If you are trying to do all of the tasks that you listed simultaneously you will have some struggles. That being said I think you can do 2 - 3 tasks at a time with 32GB and have a really nice experience (little to NO lagginess in the programs). So you could edit video, process your audio, and design a thumbnail at the same time. :) Shooting in 4k will effect the timeline playback. But since you are getting the new MBP with the latest i7 then you should be gold on playback. I found that my playback was very smooth when editing 4k. Hope this helps. I'm looking at a System 76 Lemur Pro. I do a small amount of video editing and sound editing, but not a ton. Is it worth it to upgrade to a i7 over a i5 (both quad core) and is 16GB of RAM ok? Its not much more expensive to go up to 16, but anything more starts to add up.
Hi, that's mindblown! I wonder if I occasionally use Premiere Pro to edit FHD/UHD videos of about 5 minutes in length, would it work with a 12GB laptop? Thanks in advance!
Hi. Can I add 16gigs RAM next to an existing 8gigs RAM? That's is 25GB in total. If both are DDR4 and have same frequency. Is it dependent on motherboard or will it cause any issue ??
This video is just okay. As a hardware enthusiast and long time pc builder and engineer, you were correct on your push for more ram But this video lacked information and only educated me on why YOU use more ram
Thanks for the comment. Please let me know what information you were hoping to learn, I am happy to make another video to help you understand RAM at a deeper level.
Ben G Kaiser it’s not that I don’t understand RAM, I do, I do very well. This video just doesn’t convey your understanding and your your reasoning about how much ram the audience needs. The pertains mostly to you and your uses, but doesn’t give us any sort of data to look at other than your word of mouth
@@inkspeed2778 Actually he gave a very good example of a real life scenario/use case Using a 6min video rendering as n example and how much power it takes
His definition of RAM is really poor, especially white random access memory really is. He never went into Generations. He never wanted any of that. As far as I’m concerned I’d probably rather have a gigabytes of DDR four ram rather 16 GB of slow DDR3. There are so many things he forgot to mention. Next, he links you in affiliate link or he’s making money, off of just kind of his word form. Given he never went into any type of RAM, compatibilities, you are just as ignorant walking into this video as you are walking out
What I want Able to screen record without too much lag. A little lag is fine Photo and video editing without a lot of lag. Like I said a little lag is fine some light gaiming Maybe 2 tabs are open in the background ( maybe a photo if im drawing Or a game like roblox is open while I screen record) How much ram do you recommend for me?
I you are screen recording in conjunction with other creative software then I would defeinitely get 16GB or higher. I screen record with Premiere Pro and Chrome tabs and run 32GB and it uses upwards of around 18 - 20 GB of RAM.
My PC with 16gb of ram, a ryzen 7 2600k, and 8gb of vram still lags pretty bad when video editing, specifically scrubbing, do you have any suggestions for settings that might help
I just bought a dji mini 2. I'm still learning all of this stuff but when I try to edit 4k on VDSC free version it looks like crap and the video is really choppy. I'm amusing I need more ram. I only have 8 ram
Hi, may I ask if should I use a dual channel ram 16gb (2x8) or a single channel 16gb (1x16) on my laptop for photo and video editing? or just a 8gb ram would be fine? I'm considering to buy Dell Inspiron 15 5584.
I have a question! I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 2 in 1, 7391. I love singing and editing my cover videos, is it ok to use for example: Premiere Pro + any editing music program ? Or should I edit my music first and then use Premiere Pro for the video?
i really need help. 2020 13 inch 32GB Ram i7 (quad core) ..... VS ..... 2019 16 inch 16GB Ram i7 (6 core) ? *** in this configuration the 16: is cheaper than the 13" *** Mac use.. some editing here and there. but mainly used for medical school. lots or research, classes, LARGE powerpoints and word docs, Statistical programs. 4K youtube video, netflix, and the regular laptop usage from a student. My current 2017 i5 8 Gb is too slow and stutters and cant keep up. Thank you please !!
I use premiere with a 4gb ram laptop. It runs smoothly but gets to lag if I continue editing for long durations. Not an issue editing at home but I am planning on expanding to editing on-site. My laptop has an i5 processor and an nvidia mx130, can I get by with upgrading to 16gb ram or am I doomed cause of the low spec graphics card?
How much RAM for vid RECORDING a 2-hr tape (4.7GB?). My older 3GB RAM iMac froze w/a whole tape. My current iMac has 4GB, non-expandable). I plan to store files in an external HD.
@@BenGKaiser By recording ,I mean the transfer of information from videocassette to a computer file. By editing ,I mean the manipulation or organization of the computer file after the transfer. Could I avoid the problem of transferring a 4.7GB videotape into a 4GB RAM computer by transferring 2GB at a time? And then transferring 2GB at a time to an external HD?
Very close to the same amount. I ran a test recently and it took anywhere from 4 - 8 GB of RAM to run the timeline and even more while rendering and exporting. But don't forget that your system will consume memory just to run. So you may consume a total of 12 - 16 gigs of RAM while video editing. I hope this makes sense.
