Q: When two speakers overlap in their coverage area, how much should we worry about comb filtering? How much practical effect does this comb filtering have on the quality of our sound?

I love to geek out about the physics of sound. This channel focuses on the growing opportunity for live sound engineers to improve their confidence and consistency through the understanding of the principles of sound system design and optimization. My goal is to make this channel upfront and honest about my success and failure, so you can learn from both.
I am always open to suggestions and feedback so please comment on this video or contact me through my site.

I think the 27 db difference is more for db SPL which is different to the db in the daw.

I would have thought that a person's distance from the speakers is not the significant factor in respect to comb filtering. Provided you remain central to both left and right channels (same distance from the left speaker as you are the right) then any difference in phase of the audio (left vs right) should remain true to the recording.

Hi Paul! Yes, that sounds right to me. Maybe I confused the issue in the video? Comb filtering is happening everywhere all the time, but the least amounts will be found down the center equidistant from both sources and in areas of highest isolation.

What you are describing is the comb EFFECT. A comb filter is a device that delays a signal to either destruct or construct a signal. The result is a comb effect. Noise canceling is a result of a comb filter that shifts phase (or delay) of of ambient sounds signal 180° and inserts it into an audio stream. A signal that is 180° from the original signal will cancel the original signal. I've been in electronics for over 50 years and and worked with comb filters in video for decades
