I grew up near Dunsfold in the UK which was one of the main British Aerospace testing venues for the Harrier & Hawk programs. I have very fond memories of watching John Farley flying the original Sea Harrier over & around our family home on the circuit into land. The lovely sound of that Pegasus engine spooling up & down! In particular his displays were the pinnacle (in my opinion ;-) of flying the harrier. No one bowed the harrier & threw it about like a toy like he did! Watch his display at Farnborough '82 & others!!! It's fantastic to see one still flying at airshows somewhere in the world. Here in the UK since the Shoreham airshow disaster, jets cannot be displayed using high energy manoeuvres & thus cannot stay within the confines of the airfield. Only the Red Arrows Hawks are allowed to display here now.

What a superb, professionally put together series - huge thanks for letting us have a glimpse of the incredible journey you and your team have had - cheers, and what an utterly fascinating aircraft. I've seen them at a few airshows here at my local RAF Leuchars base in Fife, Scotland and was always amazed - as were all the crowd - with their unique displays. I see the F-35B is now filling the Harrier's role. Well done USA for keeping up development (and to multi-national funding). I hope you - and Jenna!! - are still flying.

Stumbled onto your vids on the net, yes I subscribed once I opened my youtube app and searched for you. My aviation passion started in grade school with u control flying models, to Civil Air Patrol as a cadet at age 12. Then to R/C planes and started my work towards becoming a private pilot, funds squashed it, temporarily. Later got the chance again in high school but yet again funds failed. At the age of 28 after having gone into the family biz out of my strong sense of values and they needed me. I finally was able to start college. Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a dual aviation major. 2.5 years in due to illness I was forced to end my hopes just 4 hours shy of gaining my pvt. pilot license. I did some 15 years later go into a/c fuel transport as well as a/c refueling at KOKC for 8 years and worked several Aerospace America Airshows one at which I had the extreme pleasure of watching a military harrier perform. I know why you love that bird the way you do. Maybe someday I'll get the pleasure of watching you and perhaps meeting you as well. I'm now almost 60 and all busted up so flying for me will have to be enjoyed through R/C models and my onboard cameras. Close as I'm going get to being PIC. Thanks for your service, dedication and for doing what you do. You have and will inspire the next generations to fly. 🛫🛩🛬 I wish you many more happy landings before you have to give up the stick. Thanks again.

Art....so good to see my favourite aircraft still alive. I served on all three of our "Harrier Carriers" and never tired of goofing on 02 deck on down time to watch their Ops. Is she ex 800 or 801 SQDN? Commander Sharkey Ward, (CO, 801 Sqdn during 1982), has written an engaging and fascinating account of the Harrier in "Sea Harrier Over the Falklands", which eludes to how we could have used her to full tactical abilities...…no doubt you have read it. She is a beautiful piece of engineering and holds my heart.

As a former Marine, he would have had training with Navy guys in flight school. They use a lot of the same equipment and go through many of the same training courses. For instance, the Navy and Marines both fly the F-18 so it makes sense they'd go through the same training squadrons before they get sent off to their individual frontline Marine or Navy squadrons. The Marines do send fighter pilots to Top Gun. They've had Marines AND Air Force pilots (on exchange with the Navy) serve as instructors at Top Gun. The Air Force guys typically bring their own planes with them; they've operated USAF F-16 and F-15s with the Top Gun adversary squadrons as Red Force planes. The Marine Corps NEVER operated the F-14 in any of its fighter squadrons. They didn't buy the plane because at the time they were considering aircraft purchases in the 1970s, the F-14 didn't have a ground attack role at the time and really wasn't configured for anything other than air-to-air missions and the Marine Corps wanted a more multi-mission plane that had a primary focus ground attack with secondary air-to-air. They needed to replace the A-4 primarily as their short-range light attack plane because it wasn't the ideal plane for forward basing... You need a decent runway to operate A-4s from as wonderful as they are for many things. The Harrier fit that bill better than the F-14 so the Marine Corps passed on getting at least 200 F-14s for the Harrier which worked out well for the Marines. Marine pilots have flown F-14s in at Navy test facilities and as part of officer exchanges with the Navy in active duty squadrons when the F-14 was operational with the US Navy.

Worth differentiating the different Harriers. The first Hawker Siddeley Harriers into service in 1969 were RAF Harrier GR1s. As upgrades were applied they became GR3 and GR5 Harrier 1 versions. The first Royal Navy Harriers were 'Sea Harrier FRS 1' from 1980 with later versions called Sea Harrier FA2 from 1993. Arts Harrier is one of these, affectionately known as 'SHARS'. The Indian Navy bought many Sea Harriers The USMC bought 110 Harriers which were UK built and named AV-8A and AV-8C BAE and McDonnell Douglas worked to create a larger more capable version which went into service from 1983 with the USMC as the AV-8B Harrier II and the RAF as the Harrier GR7. The later GR9 was probably the most advanced Harriers built. When the UK scrapped the Harrier fleet of GR7s and 9s they were sold in CKD form to the USMC. Italy, Spain and Thailand bought Harrier II versions.

This even makes me think I'm crazy but I'm convinced I saw a harrier do a vertical take off from a parking lot in Norfolk, Va. in the early to mid 1970s. Is this even possible?
@AvengerII
@AvengerII 5 лет назад
Very possible. They bought the Harrier in the early 1970s for the Marine Corps. They actually started flying the early version (AV-8A, equivalent to the RAF Harrier GR.1) in 1971. They lost about half the original order of Harrier I's (AV-8A) in accidents in the 1970s and 1980s, about 40 planes with 30 Marine pilots losing their lives. The planes that DID manage to survive in service were upgraded to AV-8C configuration and were retired in the late 1980s.

He paid considerably less than the militaries approx. 20 to 30 million per unit cost at the time. With that said, the price to buy one now is more around the ballpark of 1.5 to 3.5 mil. Still a hell of a shinny penny but not nearly what it went for new. Talk about depreciation. Oh, one was on Ebay back in 2011 for £69,999. '97 Decom w/o engine. The price is all over the place. Condition has a lot to do with it. But that should give an idea. Hope it helps!
