How Much Would It Cost To Build A PC As Powerful As The PS5? (2023 Edition)

It’s been well over 2 years since Sony released the PS5, and fans have been treated to wonderful experiences like Horizon Forbidden West since its launch that serve as a great showcase for the power of the new hardware.
But thanks to recent advancements in the consumer PC hardware space, owning a rig that’s comparable to the performance of PS5 has become a much more lucrative option than it was in the past.
We picked off-the-shelf brand new components to aggregate a 1:1 performance when compared with the PS5, and our total cost excluding software and peripherals came at around $770. It’s pretty cheap when you put in against our 2021 edition which cost around $1130, but the price gap is bound to get even lower as we progress deeper into this generation.

You lost me at 4060ti, the FP32 performance of a 4060ti is 114% greater than the PS5's GPU. The 5700xt on the other hand only has a 5% difference in comparison to the PS5 and would be a better match since the 4060ti way outperforms the PS5 GPU.

Raw performance wise I completely agree. The thing about PC vs console configurations is the optimization. Devs. only have to optimize for one set of hardware with console, but on PC there are so many different configurations. Higher performance hardware can be seen as an offset to the difference in optimization.

@@DumbIn3D I completely agree with you, but that raw power being far more than that of a console, it allows for higher settings, fps, and resolutions. It's just a poor comparison in my opinion. The optimization across the board has been lacking too, regardless of it being on PC or console

I think you guys don't know what optimization means. There is no "PC specific" optimization that needs to be done. PCs have a bigger footprint running in the background. It's called your operating system. There's also things like the hard drive. If your HDD is causing a bottle neck, upgrading to an NVMe drive will fix that. No amount of optimizations will fix that. I just got a 2TB NVMe for $150. A 500GB was $500, just 5 years ago. You have to understand that PCs primary focus isn't gaming, so you have to consider the overhead, (or disregard it, depending on how you look at it.)... Ultimately, you could just Optimize your spending budget. Built my PC in 2017 and it still outperforms PS5.

I used to be a PC gamer exclusively way back when, but somewhere along the way, I started using consoles more and now use them exclusively. Will they ever match a custom-built PC in performance and power? No, but I'm ok with that. As mentioned in this comment section several times, the primary reason I like consoles is that the games I play are designed to play on them. When I was building gaming PCs, I was always concerned with my hardware being good enough to play games. That and upgrading became really expensive.

And you can upgrade your pc when the next console comes back or even later since you always have settings and mods to help you play almost everything with a potato (i have a steamdeck and although it doesnt have good specs it can still run anything you throw at it 30fps min) people complaining for not playing a game because they are spoiled from other games eith better performance, you can always turn down settings to play it. started with PC when I was a teen, and I was a meticulous one. As an adult with responsibilities, I prefer consoles now for optimization, price, early releases, exclusives, and time. I remember going home from work and I would troubleshoot things like RDR2 because it kept crashing every 10 minutes or Death Stranding and its anti-aliasing issues, which I fixed, but with trial and error, searching for solutions, fiddling both in game and NVIDIA settings, searching solutions on Reddit or RU-vid. I'm through all that stress, and I'm enjoying my time with the PS5. Also allotting some money to different hobbies and time with the family. best decision I ever made.

You think Sony pay store prices for their components? They buy millions of these components, so they make deals with the providers (like AMD).. Not only that, but lifetime deals of say 8 years and tens of millions of components. Perhaps AMD lose money of the first 10 million, and only make a little on the next 10 million, but then they profit huge on the last tens of millions. PC people simply don't understand the console market.. They think of it as a "different PC market", but it's not, everything is quite different. From the OS, to the machine purpose, to suppliers, to game development etc etc etc..
@Xanatos0504
@Xanatos0504 8 месяцев назад
@@johnwayne-kd1pn while they do get them cheaper, they still don't get top of the line. 4K on a PS5 is not true 4K resolution. It is upscaled. Which means even if they were to get a discount from AMD, it would still be expensive as hell to get a true 4k60 machine.
@johnwayne-kd1pn
@johnwayne-kd1pn 8 месяцев назад
@@Xanatos0504 Sure. What I mean to say was only that most likely Sony pays a "lifetime" price for components, tens of millions of them. Not even regular production cost. At least that's how it seems to me, and I'm guessing Xbox does the same, seeing how it is also priced below market. Besides that, both initially, despite even that, sell their consoles at a loss. Yeah, I don't think we get 4K and 60fps until next generation, also on PC, around that time. Anyways, by that time, Raytracing will have progressed ALOT too and become a viable technology.. Today it is just in its infancy, or just past it, somewhere. Seeing how expensive it is (GPU/resource wise), perhaps even the next generation will be a compromise and a choice somehow. No doubt some will use it as an excuse to continue using the awful 30fps. But well, perhaps I'm wrong.. But global raytracing should be possible by then, and so should say 120fps 4k.. I really hope 30fps will just die then, but I'm not too hopeful.

Because of the mass market adaptation of consoles and franchises that are exclusive to a given console (at least initially), many games are optimized to extract maximum performance from the respective console. This is similar in concept to an Apple computer having inferior components to a PC on paper but yet out-performing that PC in reality : there is a very tight coupling between software and hardware that much like Apple, consoles also enjoy. This basically means it is very hard to compare "apples to apples" between PC and a given console just like it is hard to compare an Apple computer with a PC if you only look at the specs. Best way to compare I'd argue is to look at performance comparisons : analyze the resolution, frame rates, and approximate the graphical settings of games available on both PC and a given console and then figure out what it takes in terms of a PC that can achieve similar performance to the console with that given game.

Warranty is also much easier to obtain on a PS5. In Australia, you can get an in-store replacement. So no need to wait for a technician or yourself to check which component is at fault, you just have the whole unit replaced. Thankfully though, I've been lucky and have never once got a faulty PC component despite the fact I not only build multiple PCs for myself, but also for others as well. But that could be due to Australia's strict consumer standards. Only problem I find with consoles, especially Sony is when they try launching them at $800+ AUD. Not only that, but they have a really bad launch lineup of games. It definitely makes it hard for consoles to be a year 1 or year 2 buy. $600 AUD is more reasonable as a consumer-friendly, high end console but even that will still limit buyers greatly unless you have a strong game lineup. Xbox and Switch have much more convincing pricing model.

There's a lot of people talking about the specced hardware and compatibility... But I also think it's worth highlighting no peripherals, OS, etc etc. This is just like for like hardware and the sum is always greater then the parts. Add to that peripherals.. Either a cheap keyboard and mouse and a controller for gaming.. or just a keyboard and mouse which you would want a gaming one. If you're going to use it with your TV then makes the use of it as a PC for other tasks more awkward. If going to use it as at a desk then a monitor as well. And with all this frame rate talk you need a good monitor, plus speakers or one with them built in. Also an OS, which really is going to be windows; you can use a Linux for free but then have the negatives associated for general use. On top of that, it would be a very blah looking pc. To have a stylish setup to match ps5 aesthetics you're paying out for better case, matching cables etc. But! More than all that, anyone here built their own pc knows that when you've "decided" on what you want... You end up scrolling that little bit further down the 'sort price ascending' list and "ooh, for just another $40" I can get the next model up... And so on and so on. Based on your core items there; you would be talking easy over a grand to do a proper match up.

Computer parts have longer lifespans than entire consoles. You also don't have to completely rebuild your PC to stay up to date, just a part here and there. The initial cost may be a little bit above consoles, but you save in the long run. After a few years you're replacing your entire console while a pc only needs to replace 1 or 2 parts, making it way cheaper to move to "next gen". Not to mention that people often forget about CONTROLLERS when it comes to console when you're considering the price. Controllers are about $80 a pop now and most people want at least 2 of them. So your $500 Ps5 is actually $660. Not to mention those controllers become obsolete with the next gen. Considering this along with everything else makes it obvious what wins in the long run. The only game you listed for one platform in mind was TLOU because it was originally only for one platform. Everything else was released across all. Elden Ring doesn't have PC issues and you cherry picked 2 other poor use cases. If you want to do that, look at Diablo 4 for consoles and all the stability and disconnect issues people have.

They don't run near as well as they would on PC if they were coded specifically for PC architecture. PCs use brute force to overcome the poor coding/optimization. This is something that has made me very unhappy, but even so there are _far, far_ more reasons to support the open PC paradigm than the proprietary console paradigm. ** With a _few_ exceptions, namely Crysis: Warhead (2008), The Witcher: Enhanced Edition (2008), Left 4 Dead (2008) Left 4 Dead 2 (2009), and Portal 2 (2011).

this argument has never worked, you don't even know what you're talking about - PCs support more games than all consoles combined and they get updates for much longer and more frequently too. It might cost a little bit more to get similar spec on a PC but the game will run at higher detail, higher fps and much smoother overall. And if there's ever an issue, you can actually try and sort it out yourself because you aren't locked out. Consoles games are not better optimized they are butchered with all sorts of technologies that artificially improve frame rates and in most cases just use lower quality textures and shadows since most console gamers don't know their games look trash. Most of those technologies end up coming to PC, too...

@@phant0m_633doesn’t matter if you make a pc with the same specs or better than the ps5. Technically the ps5 is capable of out performing the best pc out in the market right now Why? Because PCs are held back by previous generation hardware. Nobody remembers this but both the series x and ps5 have revolutionary architecture that surpasses PCs. What is this architecture? The architecture is the way every component connects to each other, that being: gpu, cpu, ssd, and ram. Remember when mother boards didn’t affect fps? Well guess what, now they are affecting the entire generation of computers. The positive side is that with pcie gen 5, motherboards are beginning to catch up to console architecture. But it currently won’t make a difference because games companies aren’t making games using the new architecture even for consoles. Have you noticed that games haven’t graphically changed all that much and literally a SINGLE INDIE GAME DEV can make a game that looks 10 times better than a AAA game.
