The description of cod loin ( and hence all fish loin) is as follows ... What is cod loin? Cod Loins are the Fillet Mignon prime cut of a cod fish. Cod tends to be a large fish and the fillet is often too big for a single portion. It is therefore possible to buy the cod loin, which is cut from the middle section or fattest part of the fillet. Hence your paying for the best part of a fillet and hence uts expensive.
I know I am getting old, I found out Iceland is in the Range, think it was just to get longer opening hours, every time we buy from Iceland, it happens we don't buy it any more, it gets smaller, and normally the price is higher, we used to fill the freezer, now we pick and choose what and where, Iceland is no longer good value or even cheap, shrinkflation is everywhere now.
Virtually all of their stock is held in Freezers though so their energy bill has gone through the roof like everybody else`s. It must be a nightmare from a business perspective trying to make a profit and still deliver good value.
@@sparsh415 They would have been buying power on a succession of staggered fixed price commercial contracts so won't have been hit as hard as us mere mortal domestic users
Iceland were always expensive in Spain and Malta . But they must think people are Millionaires . I would rather go to The Tower Fisheries at Blackpool it’s cheaper. Also bought 10 Youngs Cod Fish Finger for £1:89 at Farm Foods , you can feed a family with one box of Cod fish fingers for £1:89. Iceland need to take a reality check.
A bit of an update and comparison. I did a shop in Lidl earlier. They were doing 2 X Cod loins in batter for £4.49. They weighed in at 520gms, so quite a bit bigger. They also had chunky cod fillets X 4, but obviously not loin cuts, for the same price. So the Haddock fillets are bit of a bargain after all. I did buy some Salmon burgers and tried one in a bun, a bit of salad and a bit of tartare sauce. It was well tasty. My dear older sister would have a fainting spell if I told her I shopped at Lidl and Aldi. But I've been shopping with them for decades and very, very rarely have I been disappointed. I look at this way. A beef animal when slaughtered is sold on. Half of it may go to Waitrose and sold with a massive profit. The other half could go to Aldi and sold for a lesser profit. If their food is of a lower quality? Why do Lidl and Aldi get the top spots in the yearly store awards for their products?
Both Aldi and Lidl are brilliant at providing good quality food at affordable prices. But this was not always the case. I can remember shopping in Aldi in Germany in the early 1970s when it was still called Albrecht. Back then the quality wasn't nearly as high as it is today. It was mainly just cheap. But both chains learned over the years that the only way to compete with the big boys like Tesco and Asda was to equal or surpass the quality while maintaining lower prices. They have achieved this, and Aldi and Lidl regularly receive awards. Result is that now the car parks are full of large BMWs and Range Rovers as even the well-off among us go there to shop.
Our Iceland is struggling because they have chosen to do away with family essentials in favour of more expensive exclusive ranges, they were once busy with mums doing their weekly shop now they go elsewhere and their high end foods are put in the reduced section after not selling.
My first thought was the Aldi Everyday Essentials Battered Fish Fillets at £2.35, also 500g. However, the Essentials fillet is Alaskan pollock, not haddock. These two products side by side would make an excellent comparison on taste. Ideally, a blind test so that you didn't know whether you were eating the Aldi pollock or the Iceland haddock. I've eaten about twelve of the pollock fillets since your review. I love them. I would not rush to buy the Iceland fillets at almost 3 quid more.
@@SaorAlba1970 I'll bet that a lot of people wouldn't taste the difference between haddock and pollock. Haddock stocks are classed as "vulnerable", which is why it's expensive. The Greenpeace International Seafood Red List has listed haddock as one of the 20 species of fish to avoid at all costs.
Cooking Recommendation: I was thinking, you like fish, so why not try really fresh fish to pan-fry at home? There's a fishmonger in Market Street, Ulverston who sells a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood. You could get a couple of plaice fillets, lightly dust them with flour and pan-fry in a little sunflower oil for about 2 minutes each side. It's dead easy. Just don't overcook it. Remember, the fish is still cooking a little after you've removed it from the heat. I guarantee you won't taste anything finer. I have recommended plaice, because the thickness is more even than cod or haddock, but you can experiment with other fish, even pollock.
The LOIN is from the middle, chunkiest part of the fish, and as such is always nicer to eat than a thinner piece taken from elsewhere on the fish. We have an excellent, award winning fishmonger locally, and these Iceland Battered Haddock Loins are considerably cheaper than buying Haddock loin from him and preparing them myself. They're also delicious, and so far, neither of us have found any bones! We would much rather pay for Haddock Loin Fillets from Iceland than cheap Pollock from anywhere else. We have already had them several times and don't agree that the batter is too thick, it's lovely crispy batter, and for me, it could be thicker as it's so nice! They're always going to be more expensive than thinner fillets, it's a case of 'you get what you pay for'. You're not going to get the same quality and flavour from cheap beef compared to fillet steak, and fish is much the same! When compared to fish from the 'chippy' they're very good value, you don't get served Haddock loin in chip shops! We cook ours in an air fryer, and serve them with either home made potato wedges or buttered mash and petits pois or mushy peas, depending on how we feel!
I bought these Tuesday Gareth, I really enjoyed them, but because I'm over 60 Iceland do a 10% discount for over 60's on a Tuesday plus I saved money on the 3 for £10 offer on other products it worked out that they were free!
There are just giant fish fingers. But I must say the fish looked nice for frozen fish and tasty. Loin is the fish back but when cut into small portions there called Medallion's
I buy Morrisons Savers Battered Whitefish 500g which is just £2.35... it's not haddock, but it's really good, in fact I'd challenge anyone to be able to tell the difference!
Absolutely no chance I'd pick them up in Iceland ...the other week the review on Aldi fish was brilliant.. oim on 2nd box ...and as for going on a diet...your gorgeous as you are❤xx
Another belter of a review, your reviews always make me smile with your sense of humour and madness 😂😂😂,keep up the great work and stay safe and well as always matey.
At 65 percent fish you are getting 325 grams of actual cod here. Iceland sell 320 grams of haddock fillet for £3.50 batter costs pence so if you have a deep fryer you'd be saving £1.75.
When you think of buying fish and chips from a chippy you need a 2nd mortgage for a family of 5..i buy the Iceland cod in batter last price was 4.40. Great show Gareth
Just last night I was checking out online the Iceland range of Young's fish that are supposedly "on offer". Even on offer they're still more expensive than elsewhere. Iceland used to do their own fish pie that was tasty and good value..it seems to have disappeared online - has anyone seen it in shop?
Fantastic review. The fish looked amazing I will certainly be trying these. At the moment my favourite fish is Aldis extra large cod in batter. Its increased in price recently its now £4.69 for two pieces {460 g }. Also yesterday picked up a new vindaloo ready meal with Pilau rice from Aldi {400 g} It cost £2.49. Lots of rice and not enough chicken however tastes amazing.
Great review Gaz as always and I stand back in amazement at the size and the price but it’s the way everything is going and I got one of those pizzas from Aldi that you did the other day a snack for tomorrow and the look pretty good in real life and keep up with the great work 👏👏👍👍
Here in Cape Cod I get two small, flat haddock fillets with thin batter, from brand named Gorton’s, frozen, for around $7.49…..but haddock fish and chips from the shops here are $15+ to $20. That comes with coleslaw and tarter sc. and usully a good size slab ar two med ones of fish. Cod is few dollars less. When you order your fish and chips you have to specify if you want haddock, otherwise you get cod.
A bit on the dear side, you can get the co op meal deal, fish portions, scampi, chips, peas and 3 magnum lollies for £6.00, great value indeed !! Spot on review as usual, please do a mango chutney-off ?
You`ve got my mouth watering again Gareth. There`s an Iceland just along the road from me and i`ll pop in and get those tomorrow along with some sweetcorn.
Hang on, ASDA are also increasing their prices, along with Lidl, Aldi. All of them are increasing prices. Iceland are closing unprofitable stores every month, just like any store group.
To be fair they did look exactly as pictured on the box , taste wise you couldn’t fault them they sounded crispy and tasty that’s for sure! Price wise though? They are well up there by weight! Cheers for another good vid 👍
I usually get Icelands Harry ramsdens battered haddock fillets 500g you get 2 big ish filets for £6.50 but I’m gonna give this a try as it’s £1.25 cheaper! Hope these are as nice as Harry’s are lol
They looked delicious! 😋To be fair, loin is the best part of the fish, and considering what fish costs from the chippy (and I appreciate that they have overheads and they're cooking them for you) I don't think £5.25 isn't too bad. Great review as always .👍
Had a steak pie today from a butchers (DT Law in haslingden lancs). Absolutely stunning. Full to the brim with steak. You'd never get anything close in a supermarket. Wasn't even that expensive either, less than £3. Just thought I'd try it. Please Gaz can you do some more of those drive outs to find proper pies, well any type of foods that butchers/ farm shops sell. Cheers.
Hi Gaz it's been a while since I commented ,but I've still been watching ,I remember that song '2 unlimited Y'all ready for this' wow that takes me back ! 😀👍
@@BaldFoodieGuy yeh, good thanks Gaz,busy at work lately that's why I don't get to watch your videos as soon as you post them ,but trust me still as great as always 😊👍
Thick batter helps to add to the overall weight using less fish of course, you are right. The producers know all the tricks in the book to maximise profit. I have had these and they do taste good. Bit on the pricey side if you ask me. Good review bud. All the best.
I guess the price depends on how you look at it. A standard size haddock at the chippy is around 6.50. You definitely need 2 of these to make a meal though, 1 for the kids. Loin is the centre and meatiest part of the fish. Im going to try these, Iceland have upped their game lately.
I’m having a bit of a Debby Downer of a week and just wanted to say thank you for bringing a bit of humour into my day You made me chuckle with the humour Please keep on doing you 😊❤
Gareth, your chunky Haddock looked well coated with a crispy crunch, and cooked up well. But bloomin eck they are small.I'd need a minimum of 2fillets with double chips& mushy peas. Could with salad in a bap pass as a fillet'o fish burger 🍔 😊But me old son ,long gone are the days ot two bob(10p)fish&chips 😢😢 keep the quality of your vlog on the up,they keep me smiling ☺ Cheers
Hi from 🇨🇦! Fish do not have loins. The term is used as a marketing ploy by manufacturers , and is used to describe the prime part of the fish which is the widest or thickest part! They did look good but I agree the batter was a tad too much. Enjoy your day!
They looked pretty good,I’d rather have a small piece of something good than large portion of something less tasty .The loin is the best part of the fish, Gareth the way you ate that fish is it fair to say your on a see food diet lol your good craic, thanks for the review ❤
You should have had one of those those in a lightly buttered roll, would have made it more filling and like an actual meal. Bought 2 cod, 1 haddock and 3 portions of chips last week from the chippy, came to £38! Tbf though the fish were large and there were loads of chips, the price still astounded me though.
Mostly white fish is sold from the tail end, especially in a chippie. The loin is the best part and the thickest of the fish. Also it is Haddock, which is dearer than Cod and as I said the loin is the best cut. It is like comparing a fillet steak to a frying steak. So yeah, there are cheaper versions out there, but of a lower quality. With the price of fish today? the price for almost 500gms is fair value. Nice review Mr G 👍👍👌 and "spot on", with some chips and mushy peas and this would be great. Have you ever thought of doing a chippie review of different fish? Huss, AKA Rock Salmon, is well underrated and is a lot cheaper than other white fish. It also has the benefit of having no bones, just cartilage which some chippies will cut out before frying. And yes I'm coming up to 70, but I have "Are you ready for this?" By 2 Unlimited on my Spotify playlist 🥰🥰😎🥰🥰.
Back in the 80s they did Cod and Parsley sauce boil in the bag. Birds eye i think. I had something similar and the cod was chewy unfortunately. Also used to be melt in the mouth.
There is nothing but white mush in fish fingers and haddock and cod portions that has been scraped of the floor with huge amounts of thick breadcrumb mixture resembling cement
do what i do, local pond, childs fishing net. 12 stickle back fish fill a slice of bread easy! bit of frog spawn make the spikes go down easy peasy. top tip, dont tell anyone!🤨
