DnDIY! Terrain building scratches a major aspect of my TTRPG world
@Stephen-Fox
@Stephen-Fox 2 месяца назад
I wouldn't say weirdly relevant, but I'm a hobby writer, and also enjoy world building (to the point that I sometimes have to deliberately not do world building for writing projects because I am fully capable of world building to the point of procrastination) and while running is different from writing - having no control of the protagonists in TTRPGs makes a huge difference rather than theoretically having full control of the protagonists but somehow they sometimes surprise you anyway - there's definitely an overlap in the skill set at least for coming up with scenarios and pacing.

Playing videogames, and occasionally watching shows, I sometimes have "how would a tabletop rpg session have created this moment" musings. A recent example from the Netflix One Piece: Zoro's Player: THIS TIME, I'm making it out of this damn well. DM: Make another Strength check. Zoro's Player: ...If I flashback to my tragic backstory, do I get advantage? DM: I'll allow it.

This isn't typical reaction videos, they don't show the entire media and react to it real time, but @CinemaTherapy has a licensed therapist and professional filmmaker best friends react to films and break them down from their respective expertise, and I love it. They only do movies because of time constraints (but made an exception for ATLA). Each episode is around 25 mins.

You have absolute hit the nail on the head for me here! I am autistic so one of the main ways I feel connection and something that brings me a lot of joy is sharing things I love with people, but often the people in my life aren't interested in my special interests, my mom will indulge me a bit, but I could never have her watch a full episode of a d&d actual play show, or a 3 hour video essay/docymentary on a specific bit of fashion history. Reaction channels offer me that feeling of satisfaction without bothering the people in my life. Plus I get to "share" the things I love over and over again to many different people and get all sorts of reactions!! I really do want to try my hand at DMing, it just seems like the exact sort of thing I would love - the control(ish), the word building, the storytelling, the sharing things I love with my friends!!

One that does more analysis than reaction is Cinema Therapy, where a filmmaker and therapist analyze key scenes of movies in order to get in the heads of characters as well as show off the filmmaking techniques at play, but there's still plenty of direct reactions to scenes in their videos.

I started watching reaction channels when Covid hit and I had to at least pretend to be working while the kids were doing their homeschooling. (Natalie Gold was one of the first) I think sharing music or movies I like with others was also comforting, as you mentioned. Unfortunately, some of those channels have died off. It seems like the ones with couples/duos endure longer. I suggest recommending High Fidelity the book to others instead of the movie. Or read it yourself first if you haven't.

Another channel that deserves mention: Semblance of Sanity Two brothers watching various shows (a lot of anime, but also various stuff including Legend of Vox Machina), and the thing I like about them is they always feel like they are "on top" of what they're watching; it's rare to see them miss out on subtext and details that are usually ignored or misunderstood by reactors.

I want to say I’m 99% sure they watched the original vox machina stream so the fact they know what is coming in the show but then seeing their reactions how its done is great. Also they do a great after episode discussion talking about what they saw and what could becoming next

You know I've always had a bit of a snooty, "Watching people watch things other people put in the hard work to make? That sounds fun..." reaction to reaction channels and while I still don't love 'youtubers reacting to other youtubers, this cannibalizing views from often smaller creators', you've really made me rethink my knee jerk reaction to the format as a whole. I'll check a view of these out and maybe find some new stuff I'd really enjoy! Liking things is better then not liking things generally speaking after all, right? Thank you Mike!

FLG is one of my favorites. Now that I have finished the video, I totally get where you're coming from about enjoying someone else's reactions to something you love and enjoy. In addition to FLG (Angela is really wonderfully vulnerable, as you said), I also like Ashley Burton, Steve & Nikki, Rob and Trin, as well as Steve Tanktop. MegaphoneMan has quickly grabbed my heart, I just don't know where to find/make the time to consume his content.

I don't really watch many film/TV reaction channels, but I love watching music reactions, mostly to music I love, though sometimes I do get good recommendations. The best ones are usually those done by people who actually know music, and so can appreciate the craft. The best overall one IMO is probably the Charismatic Voice, who is an actual opera singer, and I really like seeing her go on a journey discovering mostly metal, and giving great insight to the craft. For specific videos, I like reactions to Nightwish 'Ghost Love Score' - Wacken 2013, Ayreon 'Valley of the Queens' and 'Everybody Dies' both from the Ayreon Universe concert, and Devin Townsend 'Kingdom' from EMGtv.

Most of the channels you listed off are already in my go to list, with some exceptions I hadn't heard of before. Since you've seen the Normies I assume you're aware of Blindwave (they've crossed over more than once which is my reason for the assumption.) If I can watch Blindwave react to something, they're generally my preference, though they do make a point of trying not to make negative commentary and occasionally I wish they'd break from that, but if you like the Normies you'll probably like Blindwave 😊
@thehonk3899

Yes! Blind Wave are my favorite! Something I really appreciate about them is that all of them bring something different to the table in terms of their preferences, but they aren't too far apart from each other. I have found this makes for great after-watch discussions while not getting too lost in the sauce. And their back and forth banter takes me back to watching shows with my friends growing up.

Love Preview'd for the exact same reason - came for the banter and stayed for the emotional devastation. Great video as ever, Mike.

Some of my favorite reaction videos (and real life reactions) have been people seeing the band Jinjer perform for the first time. Highly recommend watching the video for Jinjer's "Pisces" (live session) and then checking out some of the dozens of reaction videos. As for hobbies that overlap with RPG's, my hobby/side-hustle is leathercrafting so I have ended up making dice pouches, dice trays - even armor pieces and accessories for those who like to dress up - for my party and other friends/family who are into gaming. It has been a fun way to add to their game-playing experience and immersion.

I'm don't watch that many reaction channels but I agree that the few vids I saw from pReview'd I sympathize with them because they voice everything they're feeling and that is cool. I understand why some people think that watching people react to stuff is weird and lazy, but I really enjoy the genre as well, for the same reasons you listed. Having a lot of fun watching Megaphoneman watch CR right because it's also an excuse for me to revisit C1, which I wouldn't have the patience to rewatch alone honestly lol Some recommendations: I enjoy Ashley Burton's channel. She's a younger millenial who reacts to movies from the 80s/90s. Not exactly a reaction channel per se, but Cinema Therapy is amazing (a therapist and a film director react analyze movies and characters from the point of view of their profession). Definitely Not Definitive is also a cool channel, they're a couple who react to nerdy stuff and they're super friendly.

I recommend the Heroes Reforged channel. They mostly do the mainstream geeky franchises, and Hector is a walking comicbook Encyclopedia. He used to be at Geek & Sundry and played with some of the Critical Role crew a different show/ttrpg. Also all 3 of them (not 100% sure) used to be vfx artists doing 3D conversions of movies, and have some fun insight and an endearing amount of enthusiasm for 3D movies. (Even tho probably 90% of people on earth hate it outside Avatar... :D)

I've never been one for reaction channels (probably why I never got into doing it myself, despite that being my m.o.), but I finally got to experience this sort of "sit back and watch the players react" satisfaction not that long ago. Running my friends through our first attempt at the Sentinel Comics RPG, I threw them up against a supervillain who was intentionally meant to be a creepy weirdo. And they *hated* him. And it was *awesome.* :D So now I can say, "Hey, you guys remember Mister Moisture?" and get a chorus of groans from around the table, it's wonderful.

Fun fact: I am currently or have been in the past subscribed to every channel you mentioned! I ... may have a problem. But as requested, here are some recommendations: -Nerdy Nightly: they're more honest with their negative reviews than most reactors, and have some experience in the TV and movie industry (as extras, etc), so they have quite a bit of insight into the craft. Plus, they stream a fantasy book club, although I haven't participated in that one (I'm a sci-fi guy). -Whimsory: she doesn't over-emote quite as much as most reactors, but makes up for it by _re-watching a movie multiple times and reading multiple articles about it before giving a review and analysis._ She's above and beyond. -Ashleigh Burton, Alex Hefner, Just Trust Ash: all have their minds in the gutter and are frequently less-than-PC ... and I love them for it. YMMV.

By far my fav reaction channel is Teaboo. As the name might suggest, Tee primarily focuses on anime and occasionally some manga. He is incredibly talented in analysing not just the narrative but animation as well and can go rather in depth and become really emotionally invested about a lot of topics that might come up, and he is also very knowledgeable about various anime tropes and the cultures as a whole. With a massive body of work spanning a few years now, im sure theres something for everyone in there :) and some minor amazing things about his work; There are no ads on his videos, not because of youtube issues but because he hates them! He completely funded through patreon and all of his content is entirely free.

I watch LPs of video games in the same way I watch reaction videos - It's a chance to do something approximating reliving media for the first time. But the reaction channels I'm currently watching, and discounting new episodes of things for what I'm watching from these channels - Gallifrey Gals (specifically their BSG and Red Dwarf reactions), That's Not Acting (Who comes at media from the perspective of an acting coach, specifically his Doctor Who reactions), Sesskasays (Who has the most amazing responses to fashion, specifically her Doctor Who reactions), and Marie-Clare's World (specifically her Sarah Jane Adventures, Sapphire and Steel, and Space 1999 reactions. Would be watching her Who reactions but I found her at a weird time for those, since she's in the wilderness years atm so I'm picking and choosing what of her Doctor Who stuff I watch. When she moves from S&S to The Prisoner I'll be watching those as well)

Focusing mostly on anime (with occasional forays into western animation and past dips into live action), the brother duo of Caleb and Jacob have incredible chemistry, aren't afraid to be emotional (either positive or negative) and have some of the most in depth after-watch discussions of any reaction channel I've come across. I enjoy some reaction content, though pretty much all of it is fake to one degree or another it can at least be interesting with the right person. I kinda view it as the streaming equivalent of Reality TV; it's all trash, and there's varying degrees of actual "reality" in any of it, but some of that trash can be genuinely entertaining. A lot of it is also incredibly questionable in terms of if it should count as stealing content or not. The good ones are the ones that actually have something to say about the material beyond just performative "oohing" and "awwing", the best are the few that actually bother having a discussion about it at the end instead of just cutting out as soon as they push their socials. Nerdy Nightly is one such channel I recently stumbled on thats pretty solid. The worst ones are the ones that are trying so very hard it's painfully clear its an act, and the ones that feel a need to say things just to say things every few seconds and not because they actually have anything worth saying. There's also a few that try to do an MST3K riff schtick but they just.. do not have the chops for it.

I love reaction channels! My favorite for a while has been @AlandaParker. She does a lot of horror movie reactions but not exclusively, and she cracks me up. She's so witty.
