How Net Energy Metering in California Works with Solar

Net metering also know as net energy metering or NEM is a solar incentive that allows you to store energy in the electrical grid with your utility provider be it SoCal Edison, or San Diego Gas and Electric. This occurs when your solar panels produce more electricity than you need, and that energy is sent to the grid in exchange for credits. At night, or during other times throughout the year when your solar isn’t producing enough and you have to use energy from the gird you’re deducting this energy usage from your solar credits.

Now I see how important it is to have a system well designed. The comments further emphasized this: 1) you don't want to produce excess energy that goes to credit because after the break-even point you only get compensated 2.5 cents per kWh;@) if your system is too small, net metering kicks in and you could still end up with a substantial bill from the utility company. Please take the time to further educate us with a video that includes a battery in the equation and if it is cost-effective to include one in a well-designed system. Thank you.

SoCal Edison will only pay out a rate of (Net surplus Compensation Rate) about 2.5 cents per kWh that you generate beyond what you use. I’ve got a fairly large rooftop solar install generating 90kwh daily and I’m only using around 5kwh daily. So 85 kWh gets sent to the grid where they are charging someone else the full 26-54 cents per kWh while paying me 2.5 cents. This sound about right?

i just purchased a home with only 9 panels and when reviewing the daily production, i am seeing only 12-15 kwh per day, getting peaks of 17 kwh per day last month. in the video, the generation chart example showed daily production as low as 32 kwh and as high as 67. is this assuming the example house has a lot more panels?
@dalerolph
@dalerolph 22 часа назад
Solar production fluctuates throughout the year, and depends on the system size. 9 panels is one variable but you need to know the wattage of the panels too. This will help in calculating the annual production and the estimated daily production. The system we provided as an example was much larger.

@@dalerolph I'm in PG&E. I clarified the situation: my system is large enough to where time-of-use should be irrelevant. Given that I am in a foggy area of San Francisco, I wonder why so many people in sunny San Diego are buying batteries instead of just installing larger arrays

@dalerolph
@dalerolph 2 года назад
NSC is a different program from NEM. NSC is optional at the end of 12-months you have the option to cash our your excess credits at a reduced rate usually 2-3 cents per kilowatt-hour. We recommend to our customers to roll over their NEM credits to the next year rather than cashing out.

Does anyone know why LADWP dont take all the energy I'm creating. Last period I produced 1.3 Mwh, but LAWP say they only revieved 464 Kwh thats only 1/3 of what I'm producing !?
@melrobinson6919
@melrobinson6919 2 года назад
Paul, you produced 1.3mWh in the last two month billing period, the lowest output period of the year (being in the middle of winter}? What size is your system and when did you install it? On the discrepancy you described, did you account for your actual usage (that would obviously not be sent to the grid)? I'm with LADWP also, in Sunland, and installed my 9.3wWh system in December, so I've seen only i bill, which was partially with the old meter and partially with the new solar meter. I've been taking readings from the meter on most days, at the same time each day. Nice to be buiding up the "bank" each day now. Anticipating this will help when the summer heat comes and I'm running both A/C zones in the house and the pool pumps a lot more.

The explanation is correct, but the math is wrong. For example, I live in San Francisco where I get charged $0.35/kWh. I have solar (but no battery) and when I send electricity to the grid, PG&E credits me $0.07/kWh. So basically, I have to produce 5x more electricity in order to cancel out the 1 hour of electricity. The only way you stand a chance of being able to pay $0 or gain money from utility companies is if your solar system is sized correctly AND you have a battery.

..I think NEM is not very efficient...2 way meter is more making sense..let say you have pv system.. let your home appliances utilize it first before sending excess to the grid ..so here your grid is your battery for night time consumption..1 to 1 basis...this is fair trade...and everyone can do it..even starting from 1 PCs of 72 cell will be beneficial..

I’ll tell you what is BS. I’ve had solar on my roof for about 6 weeks. Edison has not switched my billing over to NEM 2.0. I have called my solar installer and they confirmed they sent in my forms as soon as the job passed final inspection. Edison is just taking their sweet time because why not? They are getting all my power that is sent onto the grid day in and day out without giving me any credit. I’m thinking about talking to a lawyer. In the mean time I’m thinking about turning off my system until they switch me over to NEM 2.0. I hate Edison. They’re crooks.
